Accessing Etna Collaborative File Shares

Access Etna from On Campus:

All students, Faculty and staff can gain access to their Etna | Scholarship and Etna | Classes directories from any computer on the 乐播传媒 network (except library kiosks). However, the resource will not show up as a network drive (think China or Belfast). Users must make a connection manually. Fortunately, this is easy to do.

Access Etna from Windows 7:

In the lower left corner of the screen:
  • Click on the Start menu in the lower left corner of the screen
  • Enter \\netapp.bcis.bates.edu\etna

or

  • \\paris\etna

The resulting file manager window will now provide access to the Etna directory.

Access Etna from Windows 10:

Bring up the Start menu in the lower left corner of the screen:
  • Right click on the start menu

In the Run window, type:
  • \\paris

Enter your 乐播传媒 username in the format:
  • bcis\{username}

Enter your current 乐播传媒 password, select the remember my credentials box, and then choose “OK”.

The resulting file manager window will now provide access to the Etna directory.

Access Etna from Mac OS:

In the finder window:
  • choose the 鈥淕o鈥� menu and
  • select 鈥淐onnect to Server…鈥�

Then, in the 鈥淐onnect to Server鈥� Dialog box:
  • enter smb://netapp.bcis.bates.edu/etna
  • click 鈥淐onnect鈥�

The operating system will open a file manager window showing the contents of Etna. From there you can navigate to your materials:

Access Etna from Off Campus:

Option 1 [乐播传媒 Faculty and Staff]:
Etna can be accessed from off campus by 乐播传媒 faculty and staff via a virtual personal network (VPN) option. This method provides a secure connection between your computer and the 乐播传媒 network.

This is option is . Faculty and Staff who wish to access Etna file storage via VPN should contact the IT Service Desk (via email at helpdesk@bates.edu or phone at 786-8222) to have the VPN client installed on their 乐播传媒 managed computer. IT Service Desk Staff will provide instructions on how to connect to the 乐播传媒 network during the install process.

Option 2 [乐播传媒 Faculty, Students, and Staff]:

乐播传媒 College students, faculty, and staff can access their Etna directories via a Secure Socket Shell (SSH) using a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) client.  

The example below uses the widely used Cyberduck client, which is freely available for both Mac and Windows OS.  You can download the Cyberduck installer for Mac or Windows OS here:

The steps provided below should be applicable to most SFTP clients:

  1. Open the Cyberduck SFTP Client application.
  2. Select the 鈥淏ookmark鈥� button from the top pull down menu.
  3. In the resulting bookmark dialog window:
    1. Select the SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) from the pull down menu.
    2. Server: abacus.bates.edu
    3. Username: [your-乐播传媒-network-username]
    4. Password: [your-乐播传媒-network-password]
    5. SSH Private Key: None
    6. Client Certificate: None
    7. More Options
      1. Path:/usr/netapp/etna/Scholarship/[your-Etna-Scholarship-directory-name]
        Note: Your Etna directory name is probably not exactly the same as your 乐播传媒 username!
        For example bbobcat2鈥檚 Etna/Scholarship directory is called Beany Bobcat.
      2. Connect Mode: Default
      3. Encoding: UTF-8
      4. Download Folder: [select your desired download directory with the 鈥淐hoose鈥� option.]
      5. Transfer Files: Default
      6. Web URL: [leave blank]
      7. Notes: [add helpful notes for yourself]
  4. Your completed bookmark should look something very similar to:

  1. Close the 鈥淥pen Connection鈥� dialog window.
  2. With the Cyberduck application open, select 鈥淏ookmark鈥� and then select your Etna bookmark.  This should open your SSH connection and allow you to upload and download files from your Etna directory.
