A picture says a thousand words. But how many words describe the process of photographing an entire community 鈥� 乐播传媒 in this case 鈥� from the eclectic perspectives of two visual artists?

鈥淧eace begins with us.鈥漈hat was the theme of this year鈥檚 United World College Day that a group of Davis United World Scholars at 乐播传媒 celebrated by gathering with staff from the Center for Global Education in front of Roger Williams Hall. UWC Day is the annual global celebration of the UWC mission and values, which takes place on Sept. 21 every year, to coincide with the UN International Day of Peace. Each year, UWC Day is celebrated by thousands of people worldwide, including students and staff at UWC schools and colleges, national committees, UWC alumni and friends. Associate Dean for International Student Programs James Reese likes to recognize the day at 乐播传媒 with a photograph and gathering.The spirit of friendship was in the air as students broke up from their large group to exchange hugs and words with classmates. Newcomers Rosina Makwabe 鈥�26 of Arusha, Tanzania, and Verina Chatata 鈥�26 of Blantyre, Malawi, who met at 乐播传媒, laughed and hugged. 鈥淚鈥檓 happy to have a friend,鈥� Makwabe said.A $5 million scholarship gift to 乐播传媒 College has expanded access for talented international students who come to 乐播传媒 from the highly respected secondary schools of the United World Colleges movement.The gift, from Jonathan Blair Frank 鈥�89 and Tena Fishman Frank 鈥�89, provides need-based financial aid for UWC students at 乐播传媒 under the Davis United World College Scholars Program.The world鈥檚 largest international undergraduate scholarship initiative, the Davis UWC Scholars Program is dedicated to bringing together 鈥減romising students from diverse cultures and supporting their undergraduate educations at selected American colleges and universities鈥o create greater international understanding among the world鈥檚 future decision makers.鈥澙植ゴ� is among 99 U.S. colleges and universities that have partnered with the Davis UWC Scholars Program, which helps provide college access to 3,800 students from 165 nations.(Phyllis Graber Jensen/乐播传媒 College)Yvonne Chu 鈥�25 of Changzhou, China, with Alan Wang 鈥�24 of Henan, China

Welcome to the eighth annual 乐播传媒 Photographers鈥� Favorites: 20 images from 2021, photographs and video clips, that try to answer the question, "What makes a photograph your favorite?鈥�

Jonathan Farrell '20 binds his creative writing yearlong thesis, a series of short stories, written under the guidance of his adviser, Jessica Anthony. He gathered a group of friends in the library at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning to bind his thesis (not quite done but close enough) to find closure. And he asked his friend Stevens "Steve" Shea '22 of Wilson, Wyoming.鈥淚t鈥檚 weird. Like, I feel like this was something kind of last minute, that I wanted to bind in the end. But they kind of gave me the closure I was so desperately looking for. And since, this thesis isn't really just a semester or year- long like mine was in the end, but it's kind of like all these stories are the amalgamation of my entire time here at 乐播传媒 and something that I've been fortunate enough to write, and looking back reminded me of everything I've been through. The themes are kind of centered around, are kind of themed around an idea of loneliness and how characters try to cope with that. One of the stories is about a guy sitting upon a chapel kind of rooftop talking to gargoyles. Another one is a guy trying to think about how you can get a goldfish out of his toilet, and his goldfish is like almost a plastic God sort of thing. Yes, the characters cope with their own loneliness and they move forward. Great.Steve has become a really good friend of mine this year. I met him at the beginning of the year, and I didn't really know him at first, but we were rock climbing together. He was always around a lot when I was working on my thesis, which was Saturday nights when the deadline was Sunday morning. And whatever I would write about it, like Johnny, 鈥榠t's all good.鈥� Like, 鈥榙on't worry about it. You know, you're writing You're doing well.鈥� You're like, 鈥榡ust keep on going.鈥� And that was something I was so kind of thankful for.鈥濃�淚t's definitely weird that we're all done. I mean, so many seniors are now off campus. And we kind of, I've been thinking a lot like, you know,
