- 4:45pm | The Rev. Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays Debate
Presented by students from Morehouse and 乐播传媒 colleges, this debate honors the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Mays, a 1920 乐播传媒 graduate, prominent debater, longtime Morehouse president, pioneer of the civil rights movement, and important mentor to Martin Luther King Jr..
This year鈥檚 topic is 鈥淩esolved: This house believes that social justice movements should practice a politics of anger.鈥
Dr. King offered a complicated assessment of anger鈥檚 place in our struggle for social change. Dr. King once cautioned in his speech titled 鈥淭he Other America鈥 that 鈥渁ngered expressions鈥 of despair could produce 鈥渂itterness in the violent rebellions鈥 of civil rights activists. Yet, Dr. King also recognized anger鈥檚 positive potential in his 1968 commemoration of W.E.B. Du Bois, expressing that 鈥渢he supreme task is to organize and unite people so that their anger becomes a transforming force.鈥
