More the Merrier

The first half of the 1998-99 ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Club calendar year finished in strong fashion, with 25 ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Clubs (up from 17 at this time one year ago) holding 50 events from July 1 through Dec. 31, 1998.

The activities were wide ranging in geography and in type, from Lewiston/Auburn to Los Angeles, from London to Tokyo, from a young alumni whitewater rafting trip (see fall 1998 issue, page 64 and outside back cover) to athletic events, museum tours, concerts, autumn hikes, and dinner receptions with College representatives.

The Alumni Council continued and expanded its series of annual welcoming receptions for recent graduates. Eight new cities were added (Chicago, Denver, Hartford, Los Angeles, Portland (Maine), Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle) to last year’s locales (Boston, New York, Washington, D.C.). The young alumni/ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Club committee of the Alumni Council coordinated these events with the Alumni Office and with representatives from Bowdoin and Colby colleges.

Many thanks to all of our terrific volunteers for their help in getting the 1998-99 ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Club calendar year off to such a fine start!

Building Blocks

In October 1998, we were pleased to welcome the reformed Southern Connecticut ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Club to our roster of newly active clubs.

Peter Olson ’92 helped arrange a meeting for interested volunteers at his law office in Bridgeport, Conn. Joining Peter for an initial kick-off meeting were Director of Relations Scott Steinberg ’86 and volunteers Astrid Delfino Bernard ’88, Jennings Brody ’98, Allicia Clark ’88, Paige Furniss Guidotti ’92, James Levy ’92, Susan Mankowitz ’89, Stephen Muggeo ’90, Leon Nicholas ’93, and Corey Norton ’97.

This group held its first event in November in Southport, Conn., and is in the process of planning a calendar of activities for 1999.

In November, a recruiting meeting was held for the Boston ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Alumnae Association, the oldest (and only remaining) women’s ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Club. More than 20 local alumnae joined club representatives Leigh Graham ’82 and Sally Spicer ’60, along with Boston ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Club co-leader Kathleen Snyder ’96 and representatives Kim Donohue ’93 and Madeline Yanford ’93 for a discussion of future club activities.

As outcomes of this meeting, interested volunteers will help the Boston ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Alumnae Association offer networking events and activities for Boston-area ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ alumnae in 1999. Interested volunteers will also help the Boston ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Club bring ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ faculty members to the Boston area in 1999 for discussions and seminar presentations.

New York City ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Club

We wish to thank club volunteer Giancarlo Giangola ’94 for his help with the New York City ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Club during the past two years. Giancarlo has recently begun studying for his M.B.A. at New York University’s Stern School of Business.

With Giancarlo’s leadership and help from other alumni volunteers, the New York City ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Club has offered eight to 12 events annually for the past several years, including trips to the U.S. Open, art exhibits, concerts, theater performances, and social events for recent graduates.
