{"id":429,"date":"2011-11-04T00:08:05","date_gmt":"2011-11-04T04:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/?page_id=429"},"modified":"2026-03-25T14:03:20","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T18:03:20","slug":"clean-sweep","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/clean-sweep\/","title":{"rendered":"ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Clean Sweep"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College&#8217;s &#8216;Clean Sweep&#8217; sale will be on Sunday, June 14th 2026 at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Underhill Arena.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College and local non-profit organizations will host the popular \u201cClean Sweep\u201d yard sale again this year. Doors will open at 8 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This popular community event,&nbsp; held since 1991, remains one of the largest community tag sales in Maine. Thousands of eager bargain-hunters are expected to attend the sale which, in years past, has raised $20,000 for participating nonprofits, which include John F Murphy Homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial; font-family: var(--fontSansSerif);\">The bulk of the sale items come from ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College students who donate an estimated 5,000 items, including dorm room furniture, appliances, electronics, sports equipment, camping gear, rugs, clothing, and kitchenware.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Clean Sweep yard sale has three goals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep students\u2019 used goods out of the landfill<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold a low-cost yard sale <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Donate all the proceeds to local nonprofits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, bargain hunters have arrived hours before the doors open for this anticipated sale, so interested residents should plan accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Clean Sweep?<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/map\/#\/underhill-arena\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/files\/2023\/06\/Screen-Shot-2023-06-01-at-1.54.00-PM-400x275.webp\" alt=\"map\" class=\"wp-image-4650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/files\/2023\/06\/Screen-Shot-2023-06-01-at-1.54.00-PM-400x275.webp 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/files\/2023\/06\/Screen-Shot-2023-06-01-at-1.54.00-PM-900x618.webp 900w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/files\/2023\/06\/Screen-Shot-2023-06-01-at-1.54.00-PM-768x528.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/files\/2023\/06\/Screen-Shot-2023-06-01-at-1.54.00-PM-200x137.webp 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/files\/2023\/06\/Screen-Shot-2023-06-01-at-1.54.00-PM-914x628.jpg 914w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/files\/2023\/06\/Screen-Shot-2023-06-01-at-1.54.00-PM.webp 1521w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College Clean Sweep Sale will be at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/map\/#\/underhill-arena\">ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Underhill Arena<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clean Sweep is a huge yard sale filled with items left behind by students and donated by the college and faculty\/staff&nbsp;at the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every spring volunteers from local non-profit organizations help us collect truckloads of donated items from student residences. We clean, organize, and price everything. Then we help organize a HUGE, ONE-DAY YARD SALE, usually in late June. All of the earnings go to participating local nonprofits. ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ raises more than $20,000 for local community nonprofits, proving one man\u2019s trash is a community\u2019s treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students, when you&#8217;re packing up for the summer and find things you no longer need \u2013 a comfy chair, a winter coat, a book or two \u2013 donate these items&nbsp;to Clean Sweep.&nbsp;We&#8217;ll reuse them and raise funds for local organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/files\/2023\/06\/Clean-Sweep.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"499\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/sustainability\/files\/2023\/06\/Clean-Sweep-900x499.webp\" alt=\"Bonnie Mosher, checks her reflection in a mirror at Clean Sweep.
