Students should be planning to take science and\/or math courses in their first year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students who are from groups underrepresented in STEM, who are among the first in their family to attend college, or who attended a high school in rural Maine are especially encouraged to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Apply<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/stem-scholars\/apply\/bates-science-fellows-application-form\/\">application form<\/a>&nbsp;by 11:59 pm&nbsp;on the deadline listed above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In your application, be specific about your background and interests in science and\/or math. Information from your admission file is also considered in the selection process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selection Process<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The STEM Scholars are selected by a faculty committee. The committee seeks students with a demonstrated passion for science and\/or math, strong academic credentials, a desire to work hard to succeed in these fields, and who come from diverse backgrounds and bring diverse perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sophomore application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who May Apply<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sophomores planning to major in biological chemistry, biology, chemistry, earth and climate sciences, environmental science, mathematics, neuroscience, physics, or the liberal arts-engineering dual degree program may apply. They must be enrolled in science or math courses that count toward a STEM major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students from groups traditionally under-represented in science and math, students who are among the first in their family to attend college are especially encouraged to join the STEM Scholars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are a first-year student and a current STEM Scholar, you will automatically continue in the program if you tell your STEM Scholars advisor that you intend to do so.
