Professor Emily Kane talks about her book, “The Gender Trap: Parents and the Pitfalls of Raising Boys and Girls”, and why customs like pink for girls and blue for boys are not necessarily benign choices. In her interview, she says that by choosing gender-specific opportunities and surroundings for our children, “we’re constructing these categories of boys and girls and kind of convincing ourselves that it’s inevitable.” But it’s not inevitable.

Published in August 2011, “Institutions and the Economy” is a part of a Polity Press series of academic books dedicated to the relatively new field of economic sociology. Through vivid examples, Prof. Francesco Duina’s book depicts how such institutions shape economic activity at the individual, organizational, national and international levels. Her books include Nationalism: Five Roads to Modernity (1992) and The Spirit of Capitalism: Nationalism and Economic Growth (2001), both published by Harvard University Press.
