From Participant to CEO

As a �ֲ��ý student, Rodney Galvao, class of 2014, majored in Rhetoric and minored in Religious Studies and Education. His passion for community service began during his early years as a participant in SquashBusters, a youth development program that combines academic support, squash, and community service. SquashBusters strives to bring out the best in its students and support their life journey – a mission that resonated deeply with Rodney and inspired his own path. The organization instilled in Rodney a love for giving back, which continued throughout his educational journey.

Santo Pelletier (BFF 2019): A Remembrance

Two days before the start of the 2022 �ֲ��ý Film Festival, we received some devastating news. Santo Pelletier, a BFF board member in 2019, had passed away at the age of 23. We dedicated the program to them, and I made mention of their loss at the first screening but neither was a sufficient way to remember Santo.

I first met Santo during the fall of my freshman year, in Professor Myronn Hardy’s class, “The Aesthetics of Seeing: Poetry as Witness.” I took notice of them immediately; between their buoyant gait, inimitable laugh, thick head of curly black hair, and skateboard that went everywhere with them—they were impossible not to pay attention to. They were just so cool. I was floored.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Victoria “Torri” Santo Pelletier, 23, passed away on March 17, 2022 in
Tucson, Ariz.

Torri was raised in Topsham, they graduated high school in 2016 from Mt. Ararat in Topsham and graduated in 2020 from �ֲ��ý College in Lewiston with a bachelor’s degree in Rhetoric. They were employed at Conservation Legacy as a Communications and Digital Content Creator, where they were able to express their creativity and intelligence through storytelling. Torri also enjoyed and cherished their time working at the Jameson Tavern in
Freeport, and Health Living Market and Café in Burlington, Vt.

At the start of her shift, chef Shelley, played by Perla Figuero ‘21, starts the timer on her microwave and recites the following prayer: “I pray for all people, for all places where there is war or famine, I pray for our community, for justice for immigrants.” Feeling exhausted and hopeless, she gives up on her worship, asking for forgiveness.
