Callum Douglass, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Class of 2016, has begun processing his astrophotography from the Acadia Night Sky Festival. This image, taken from Sea Wall on Mount Desert Island, is of the Milky Way Galaxy.

If you look closely, you can see several deep sky objects in the frame!

The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Outing Club and the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Astronomy Club collaborated in a weekend long camping trip on Mount Desert Island over the last weekend in September. The trip was centered around the Acadia Night Sky Festival, an annual event focusing on astronomical observing, researching, and activities. Nicole Hastings representing ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College at the Acadia Night Sky Festival

Nicole Hastings, Assistant in Instruction for the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Physics and Astronomy department, represented ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College at the Acadia Night Sky Festival on September 27th, 28th, and 29th. With the use of the department’s CoronadoÌýsolar telescope and the eight inch Celestron telescope,ÌýNicole educated the 2000+ participants inÌýdark sky observation and inÌýheliophysics (the study of the Sun and its effects on Earth).

The Acadia Night Sky Festival is an annual event supported by a collaboration of Acadia National Park, the Abbe Museum, College of the Atlantic, Friends of Acadia, The Jackson Laboratory, Mount Desert Island High School, the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce, and by volunteers and local astronomy clubs. Each day of the festival was filled with solar observations, star parties, dark sky appreciation events, and educational lectures. Every year the number of participants in the festival doubles as the event gains more national attention.

Acadia Night Sky Festival, Star Party on Cadillac Mountain

TheÌýMount David SummitÌýis ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½â€™ annual campus-wide celebration of student academic achievement, highlighting undergraduate research. This year, the summit occurred on Friday, March 28th 2014. Below are a few photos from the event.

Jocelyn Hoye ’15Ìýreceived one of elevenÌýfellowships given out by the American Association of Physicists inÌýMedicine, which she has chosen to use to do summer work with aÌýgroup doing medical physics (Radiation Oncology) at the University of California — San Francisco.Ìý Only 20% of the applicants were awarded fellowships, and each winner got to chose the research program in which they wanted to participate.ÌýThe AAPM is the governing body of all of the medical physicsÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý programs in Canada and they United States.

Emily ClarkÌý’15 was admitted to a summerÌýprogram funded by the National Science Foundation called the “Research Experience for Undergraduates” (REU).Ìý Emily will beÌýspending the summer working at Indiana University in a group that studies dark matter in astrophysics.

Andrew Briggs ’15 won one of theÌýprestigious “Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships” (SURF) at the National Institute for Science and Technology (NIST) inÌýGaithersburg MD.Ìý He will be working in the Physical MeasurementsÌýLaboratory.

Kelly Puglisi, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ physics alum,Ìýwas named STEM teacher of the quarter. Kelly is a physics teacher at McKinley Technology High School. You can read the full article .
