Your student continues to receive regular updates regarding arrival and orientation; please encourage them to check their 乐播传媒 email frequently. 

In addition to all your students are hearing about arrival, we have collected some of the most-needed drop-off information for families below so you will have it at your fingertips.

For students arriving prior to August 26, please have your student continue to stay in touch with their coach (for student-athletes) or with International Student & Scholar Services (for international students) for any questions.

Schedule items of note for August 26

For families with students arriving on Thursday, Aug. 26, your student has signed up for their arrival time, which is also their testing time. Please take your student to Merrill/Underhill first and then follow the rest of the day鈥檚 schedule. Your student cannot gain access to their residence until they go through the arrival process at Merrill/Underhill.

A grab-and-go lunch will be available from 10-30am-2pm for students and their families/support teams. This is the only dining opportunity we are able to offer guests this year during drop-off.

Note that due to the recently revised campus health protocols, family members/support teams are asked to depart campus at 4pm following the conclusion of the President鈥檚 Welcome.

Please double-check campus guest health protocols before you arrive.

Worried about packing?

As drop-off approaches, it鈥檚 normal for you and your student to start second-guessing your packing strategy. Res Life has a helpful list, and here are some suggestions for must-haves from returning 乐播传媒 families:聽

• A fan
• Extra floor or desk lamps
• Extension cords
• Foam mattress topper
• A tape measure – handy to measure for throw rugs or wall space upon arrival so you can order the exact right size
• Command hooks for easy wall mounting

Thinking ahead to cold weather? If your student isn鈥檛 used to Maine winters, consider a single pair of boots that will work for both rain and snow (Bogs or Blundstones both get the nod from returning parents). Wool socks make a big difference and are light, comfortable, and warm (and not as itchy as you鈥檇 think).

Pack light. Nearly every returning family we asked told us their student packed too much, so lean on the side of leaving something out rather than cramming it in. You can always send a care package! Packing for the first 6 weeks also lets your student get settled in and see what they really need.

A few notes

• All forms and tasks are the responsibility of your student. Incoming students receive frequent updates from the First-Year Orientation team about new or upcoming deadlines or tasks to complete. 
• Family welcome events remain virtual for Summer 2021. We know incoming families are eager to meet one another in person – and we look forward to it, too! However, the biggest silver lining of this year’s virtual series is that all families have an opportunity to participate in welcome events, no matter where they hail from.

Dates for incoming students

Late May: Students receive access to Garnet Gateway, Lyceum, and their bates.edu email address. They should check these resources frequently for regular updates.

July 1: The first large batch of student forms are due. This includes a number of medical forms plus AESOP preferences.

July 12: Students gain access to online Lyceum resources about course registration. Two student-only 鈥淎sk Me Anything鈥� forums will be held on July 14 and July 21 to help answer student questions about registering for classes. These events will be recorded so students can view them later if needed. 

July 19-23: Students will register for their First-Year Seminar (FYS). 

July 20: Incoming students and families informational webinar. This event will be recorded.

July 30: Students will be notified of which FYS they will be taking, along with next steps for finishing Fall 2021 course registration.

End of July: Students will receive notification of their roommate and housing assignments.

August 4-10: Students will select their additional preferred 3 courses for the fall as well as at least 4 alternates in the event any preferred courses fills. A Registration Consultant – a member of the 乐播传媒 faculty or staff – will reach out to your student on or near August 3 to offer assistance or be a sounding board as students consider their selections. 

August 20: Students can review their fall schedule in Garnet Gateway. If they wish to adjust their schedule, the 鈥淎dd/Drop鈥� period begins on August 31.

August 26: Arrival for most Class of 2025 members. Please review the full arrival calendar here. 

Dates for incoming families

July through early August: Parents/guardians are invited to attend one of our online welcome events. Loosely organized by geography, these virtual sessions provide incoming families with an opportunity to hear from current 乐播传媒 families and to get to know other Class of 2025 parents/guardians. Registration links will be provided to families by email.

July 20: Incoming families and students webinar. A panel of 乐播传媒 staff will discuss arrival logistics, campus health protocols, supporting your student, and more. This event will be recorded. Registration links will be provided to families and students by email.

August 26: On drop-off day, the college will host a President鈥檚 Welcome for all Class of 2025 families and their students. This is tentatively scheduled for 3:15 p.m. and will take place outside, rain or shine. The welcome event is a lovely moment together on campus before families depart.

Family orientation sessions have been moved online this year and will take place as a series of webinars. Registration links will be provided by email, and all sessions will be recorded.

• Sept. 2 at 8pm ET: Academics at 乐播传媒
• Sept. 9 at 8pm ET: Life outside the 乐播传媒 classroom
• Sept. 14 at 8pm ET: Supporting your student’s well-being

Back to 乐播传媒, our family weekend, is currently scheduled for October 1-3, 2021. However, it is important to note that no decision has yet been announced about whether the college will be able to host this event in person. We will update all families as soon as there is more detail available.

We hope your summer is off to a good start and that you are looking ahead with excitement to 乐播传媒 in the fall. We wanted to share a few updates:

• Watch for an invitation next week to our Family Summer Welcome Series. These virtual events will be loosely organized by region to help you meet other incoming families who may live near you. That said, please feel free to register for the event that works best for your schedule. 

• Students are receiving weekly email updates from the First-Year Orientation team. The first set of important forms are due by July 1, including AESOP applications and the housing/roommate survey. Please make sure your student regularly checks both Garnet Gateway and their 乐播传媒 email address.

• We encourage you to browse our site to help you support your student in getting ready for 乐播传媒. Let us know if there are resources we can add!

• Move-in and Orientation: The 2021-2022 calendar has been updated to include additional detail about student arrival. We hope these dates will be helpful for your summer planning. Please continue to watch the Orientation page for key information updates, including the June 15 release of Information on AESOP.

• Your students have been updated via their secure admission portal that they now have access to Garnet Gateway. All forms that students need to complete before arriving on campus are released on a rolling basis over the summer via Garnet Gateway. If you would like visibility to your student鈥檚 financial aid or tuition payment information, your student will need to grant you access.

• Back at 乐播传媒 – our family weekend- is currently scheduled for October 1-3, 2021. However, please note that this date remains flexible, and no decision has yet been made about whether this event will be virtual or in-person. Please consider this our target date, with confirmation to come.

• Encourage your student to speak with a current 乐播传媒 student by exploring . Admitted students can search for 乐播传媒 community members by home state, academic area of interest, or extra curricular interest.
• In the coming weeks, we鈥檒l host student sessions on Sustainability, Community Engagement, Study Abroad, specific academic areas of interest, our support network, clubs and organizations, and a perennial favorite titled “But, why 乐播传媒!?” Your student can find a full schedule and register on The Den or their Application Status page. 

Updates from Campus

• Visiting: With the hopes of an in-person graduation ceremony for our seniors on the horizon, we have made the difficult choice to keep campus closed to outside visitors. We are so grateful to you for your understanding! Once our students and professors depart for the summer in early June, we are hoping to once again welcome families to campus on a limited basis.
• Move-in and Orientation: First-year student arrival will be no earlier than Monday, August 23, although the specific arrival day is not yet set. Fall athletes usually arrive on campus earlier than the rest of the entering class. With the uncertainty of how COVID might affect fall, the college is waiting a little longer than usual to finalize arrival plans, and we will keep you posted.
• 2021-2022 Academic Year: President Spencer has confirmed that 乐播传媒 will return to the semester structure for next year. Please read her full update on how 乐播传媒 anticipates balancing the academic and co-curricular experience with ongoing public health precautions.
