We had a very exciting evening tonight with NOMINATIONS for next semester’s BOC leadership. Link HERE to the spreadsheet of which people are nominated for certain positions!

Please !! everyone check the spreadsheet to see if you have been nominated for a position!! Tonight at our meeting we did in-person nominations, but you can nominate yourself or anyone else who is a BOC council member by adding their name to the appropriate list up until our next meeting, which will be after Thanksgiving break in 3 weeks. At our next meeting on Nov 28th (BOC election day essentially), please be prepared to say a couple short sentences about why you’re interested in the position you’re running for. Along with that, if you were nominated for a position that you are NOT interested in running for, please remove your name from the list!

Check over the nominations, edit as needed, and get ready to get suuuuper full of pumpkin dip & maple-leaf-shaped cheese at harvest dinner next week instead of meeting!!!

-Miles met the guy who gave the avalanche training to a ŔÖ˛Ą´«Ă˝ group last year, he said awesome things and it was one of his favorite trainings of the year

Trips

Ronan- potential work trip next week. He and Gordon have been running a bike program at Montello Elementary, and they would like to next Thursday get funding and host a bike clinic for the kids there. If anyone is skilled at bike maintenance or just being friendly with kids (will have an obstacle course to do with them) if you’re interested it’ll be 2:40-4pm next thursday! -Eli Nixon says on friday afternoon there will be fun repair work over at shred barn between moulton and hacker, resurfacing the skate ramp and alsoooo do some skating, Tommy may have bought some new boards for shred club. It’s a shred club based event but if you want to use a drill or just skate come check it out!

-6 pairs of microspikes for around $240 which is way less than usually sold. Passes!!!

Annabel- Talia Alexa and Annabel led a ladies surf trip w 39 signups brought 11, almost everybody stood up, the tide came in, awesome vibes everyone had a laugh and a good time, awesome boogie boarding.

Danielle Ward- Katahdin is happening this weekend!! Woooooo!!! (huge shoutout to Danielle and Hadley for organizing this awesome weekend coming up, it’s a ton of logistics and they’ve handled it beautifully!!! Katahdin weekend is a traditional BOC event where we send a bunch of trips up to Baxter State Park to hike the highest peak in Maine- it’s absolutely gorgeous and super fun, if you didn’t get onto a trip this year try again next year!)

Oliver Farnum- Ethan and Oliver (ofarnum@bates.edu) will be leading a beginner mountain biking trip at 4pm/4:15 THIS FRIDAY to Mount Apatite, email him! Bikes & transportation provided, fun will be had.

Gordon Platt- This saturday will be heading over to sugarloaf or north conway for some intermediate level mountain biking & you should come along! He’ll send out an email, if you’d like to get in touch his email is jplatt@bates.edu

Miles Lamberson- next week’s meeting will be ADVANCE, at the lean to which is ~20 min away from school, we will tell stories around a campfire and it will be fun and people will get patches!!!

Danielle- money for van for one day for ladies shortridge trip (around $85) we will first try to get it from security, but if not money for van from USAVE. Vote passes!!!

Margaret Dever- This past weekend went to Bigelows Ladies backpacking trip, it was getting chilly!!! They made a shelter out of tarps and then there were OREOS!!! And the oreos went in 7 min flat. A classic tale! Margaret gets a patch <33

Emma Christman- Story about AESOP! They were all in the van and then they saw a PIE STAND and a glorious blueberry pie, they were so EXCITED to eat it, on their merry way in their canoes 6 miles down the lake and realized the pie was on the dock!!!! A tragedy of a massive nature! A patch for Emma <3

Alex Platt- Driving down from Alaska w a friend, great day, worried about bears and have bear spray in tent, blows up sleeping pad, and tried to sit down on it but accidentally set off the bear spray and CAN”T SEE!!!!! This is concerning bc not only can he not see, in a tent, but also now the bear spray has gone off… luckily all lived! Patch for Alex <3

Mary Buford-Turnage- Mary was abroad in Tanzania- walking down a path at night and almost didn’t bring a flashlight but last minute borrowed one and saw a huge snake, she thinks it is an alligator and they had to drag it away. But don’t worry the guides say, it is a very polite snake!! Patch for Mary <3

Hannah- She was in the Amazon, had a bug net, got up in middle of night to pee and maybe didn’t tuck the bug net in all the way, and she feels something climbing up her leg but tries to shake it off, finally gets her flashlight and it was a 3 inch long cockroach!!!! Patch for Hannah <3

Ursula Rall- 2nd day of leading AESOP they camped with Colby, they’re being friendly, but then somebody suggests to prank Colby- idea is to melt chocolate, smear on hands and run over to Colby and say it was an emergency and they ran out of toilet paper! Jin puts go-pro in his sleeve and they go running over to Colby, they were so not having it. Moral of the story, ŔÖ˛Ą´«Ă˝ students are funner and better! Patch for Ursula <3

Eli Nixon- Also AESOP, they get off the Appalachian Trail and the sign is painted AT sign, looks kinda like an arrow. They run into a Harvard trip, the leader is being all bravado and hardo, luckily saving grace he knows a good friend of our sweet Tess. Once they get the guy talking about their day they realize the leader who is being super silly not reading signs and thinking he was in a construction zone!!! Moral of the story- keep your ego in check and read signs!!!

Ethan Simon- Was skiing with a buncha BOC alum we love and one of them was doing a lot of filming for a sick ski edit, they decide to get sendy and take off all their clothes to ride up!! Who should come along but a huuuuge group of people, Ethan & co have no good explanation for what is occurring!

Election

Running for Cabins and Trails- Alex Platt runs unopposed and unanimously wins!

Minutes Second BOC Meeting Fall 2018

Wednesday 9/19 on the library Quad commences at 6pm

-Miles welcomes everyone and says tonight’s meeting is at 6pm bc it’s outside so it is still light out, once we move inside meetings will be at 6:30 to accommodate more schedules (athletes we love you! Sorry our outside meetings conflict with practice:()

-Folks go around and say names and directorships!!!!
-Miles talks about how he remembers when first joining the BOC meetings were a little intimidating! He thinks even now, as a senior, we’re still kinda making it up as we go along and STOKED to get to know everyone, so please come to meetings, get involved, you are welcome here!

-Oliver says we have constitutional things to do: We only have one Cabs and Trails director, if you would like to run, email Oliver Farnum (parliamentarian) ofarnum@bates.edu Ěýand Chandler Ryan (secretary) cryan@bates.edu. If you are interested in the position you can talk to Sarge (Matthew Berdon mberdon@bates.edu) about what the position entails. Chandler will create a ballot and we will vote next week. #getoutthevote

-Eli Nixon will be peddling his wares after the meeting (selling his awesome BOC stickers) he now has entered the digital age and accepts venmo! We are so pleased 🙂

-Miles announces that we now have a budget, wooooo! It’s lower than we wanted but higher than it could have been, so we rockin & rollin! We have an initial allocation and will be carefully tracking our spending to be able to get more at the mid-year

-Huge thanks to everyone who participated in and supported fall fest, it was lit!

-If you have any suggestions or feedback for anything about the way we are doing things, please approach any director to let us know, we want this to be the best club it can be for y’all

-Miles announces new gas reimbursement process- if you are running a trip where ⅗ or more seats in your car are available to BOCers, you can get reimbursed for gas. We now use GASBUDDY a cool fun swanky website/app that will help us figure out gas mileage. You can do this for even small distances, so it’s more helpful if you just went to the lean-to and back and didn’t need to fill up your whole tank, and you can fill up and then get reimbursed for the amount you used for the trip. This is furthering us as becoming a more legit club and helping with budgeting processes.

-Talia Sperduto (treasurer) shouts out treasurer hours (t-hours), she emails them out every week and you can bring your receipts from BOC trips to her and get reimbursed.

-Nathan Delmar & Peter Galloway (E-Room directors) shout out E-Room (Equipment Room) hours!! This is when you can come to the BOC and borrow gear for freeeeee (with security deposit that you get back upon returning your gear)! This could be tents, backpacks, camping stoves, snowshoes, and sooooooo many more fun things!! Also you can just come check out the space, hang out, or you can come help and learn how the e-room works. It is a fun, but hard to find place: in order to find the e-room, you should find courage deep within your heart, print out a map of campus, and put on your best adventuring outfit. JK just go to the chase hall loading dock (the weird side of chase on the path between commons and 65/55), find the painted BOC logo, and enter through the doors! Continue straight through the large empty room to the door at the back, and you have reached the illustrious e-room.

-Eli Nixon announces that SURFBOARDS are now living in the E-Room!!!! They were getting cold and lonely in the shred barn, and we like to show our gear some love. You can check them out like regular gear, but if there is a big surfing trip coming up make sure to bring them backkk

-Eli mentions, if anyone wants some BOC leadership and fun and to plan a rad trip, come talk to him or email him! Fun trip that involved surfing and passports! (hint hint october break babyyyyy)

Trip Announcements!

-Sarge (Matthew Berdon, Cabins & Trails Director) announces he will be leading a trip to the ŔÖ˛Ą´«Ă˝ section of the Appalachian trail this weekend! They’ll be doing trail maintenance in a beautiful area so go along for fun taking care of an important trail, and counts as a work trip if you are looking to become a voting council member. -Next weekend (September 28th and 29th) is KATAHDIN WEEKEND!!!! Katahdin weekend is where we send several trips up to Baxter state park on both friday and saturday to stay overnight and hike the highest peak in Maine. Gorgeous area, fun mems, a wholesome weekend all around. There will be room for approx 64 ppl. If you want to be a leader, leaders will be selected on Friday, fill out the form that Danielle Ward emailed out earlier this week. Apply to be a leader it’s super fun!!!! In the past signups for going on trips have been first come first served, will now be way chiller and fairer and randomized! Good news all around.

-Sarge will also be leading another work trip the weekend of Katahdin to try to break down the downed tree on the ŔÖ˛Ą´«Ă˝ lean-to trail!

-WFA (Wilderness First Aid) certification course coming up!!! WFA is an awesome certification if you’re interested in getting more involved in the outdoors/ want to be a camp counselor/ want to lead trips pretty much anywhere. Financial aid will be available, more info will be sent out soon so keep your eyes peeled. If you want to be able to lead BOC trips, get WFA certified!

Funding/Gear Proposals

-Abbott (Sarah Abbott, climbing director) requests funding for campsites for upcoming Rumney Beginner Climbing trip, it’s $10 per person and should be about $160. This is important as we want to make sure beginner trips are as accessible as possible! We vote, unanimous support, the funding passes!

Stories!

-Ethan Simon tells a sweet tender story about this summer when he was an evening warrior from his corporate job, left work a lil early to send it to the mountain biking trails, realizes he forgot his biking shoes & decides to go for it in his fancy work shoes! Encounters the largest group of people he’s ever seen there who are all “what are thooooooose” at his kicks, and proceeds to run into them again later when he lost his phone. Luckily, they are good eggs and use modern technology to help him find his phone!!! Snaps for Ethan & making new friends

-Sarge (Matthew Berdon) tells a story about this summer when he was sailing keeping watch on the deck, and he reads a beautiful poem about the experience! Snaps for Sarge & poetry!

-Zach Guion tells a story about this summer when he went backpacking w/ some ŔÖ˛Ą´«Ă˝ pals and forgot his stove, luckily they had another one but it was BROKEN, so some nice ppl helped them out and lent them a stove at their campsite! Peaks were bagged, egos were bruised. Snaps for Zach & remembering to check our stoves before we head out on a trip!

Minutes First BOC Meeting of 2018 (Wednesday 9/12)

Commences at 5:30 on the Esteemed Library Quad

-BOCers sit in circular formation (better for seeing everyone’s bright shining faces m’dear)

-Miles (First name Miles Last name Lamberson, BOC President) apologizes for meeting time conflicting w/ sports practice, time will be adjusted for next and future weeks to try to fit more ppls schedules.

-Zach (First name Zachary Last name Guion, BOC Vice President) gives run-down of Fall Fest 2018! We show the awesome shirts designed by Lily Kip (for sale at Fall Fest events for $10), talk about Clambake logistics.

-CLAMBAKE is a glorious and traditional BOC event wherein Bobcats converge upon the beautiful Popham Beach in Phippsburg, ME for a crisp fall day of surfing, beaching, burgering and lobstering. To our great joy, it is this Saturday, September 15th, as the perfect wholesome activity before 80s Dance that night. Buy tickets in advance or day of, $5 burger, $10 lobster, First-Years are freeeeeeeeeeee!!! We will be providing (free!) buses that leave from behind commons at 10am, and will bring everyone back to ŔÖ˛Ą´«Ă˝ at 2pm from Popham (make sure to stop by the BOC table in commons to sign up for the bus in advance). If you’re an upperclassmen who wants a free burger or anyone who wants a work trip: please sign up to table in commons Thursday or Friday or cook/set up/takedown at Popham on Saturday!! link to signup to help out is

-Directors go around and introduce themselves, explain their directorship areas, and shout out their Fall Fest trips- all detailed in the Fall Fest flyer attached.

-Miles explains that during regular meetings we would do gear votes- If you want to propose a gear purchase to the BOC, send an email to the Secretary (Chandler Ryan cryan@bates.edu), and she will forward it to the group so everyone can read up. We will vote on it at the next meeting!

-Zach explains how you get to vote at BOC meetings- you become a council member! 3 steps: go to 3 BOC meetings, tell a story at a meeting (can be about a fun commons creation, can be about an awesome animal you saw outside somewhere, can be a fun story from your AESOP! or anything else), and do a work trip! Work trip could be tabling for an event, helping strip climbing wall, cleaning up E-Room. Once you have these 3 steps done, you get a cute BOC patch and become a council member and can vote in meetings and for directorships and lead trips (which is all fun, cool and lit).

-Miles talks about mission of the club- student run, based on learning, respectful of prior ability levels, interests, etc. The focus is on getting all ŔÖ˛Ą´«Ă˝ students out in the beautiful state we go to school in. For fun, for reflection, for making new friends and trying new things.

-Miles reiterates that all trips, facilities, meetings are open to everyone on campus!!! We mean it: if you want to get outside or get involved w BOC, we want to see you on one of our trips and/or at our meetings!!!
