But where else are you going to learn what \u201cyagging\u201d is?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"229\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-5.43.09-PM-900x229.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-152566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-5.43.09-PM-900x229.webp 900w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-5.43.09-PM-400x102.webp 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-5.43.09-PM-1536x390.webp 1536w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-5.43.09-PM-1200x305.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/03\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-31-at-5.43.09-PM.webp 1638w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Need a Hug?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a followup to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/31\/12-bates-catfacts-about-jimmy-carter-jimi-hendrix-julia-child-and-more\/#dance\">CatFact in the last edition reporting that until 1922<\/a>, campus dances were prohibited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just after ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ approved campus dances for the first time, Dean of Men and Professor of Biology Fred Pomeroy told the male students that ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ would not allow the \u201ctype of dancing at downtown dance halls\u201d and that dancing was \u201cnot an excuse to hug a girl.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proprietors of Lewiston dance halls, offended by the insinusation of &#8220;indecent dancing&#8221; in their establishments, said that the dean was clueless about modern dancing, saying that it was impossible for a couple to both hug and keep time with the day&#8217;s fast-paced dances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ultimate Decision<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October 1977, the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Department of Athletics refused to approve a new club sport: ultimate, the disc sport.<em> <\/em>One reason: There was \u201cconfusion as to just when the ultimate season is,\u201d according to <em>The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Student<\/em>. (ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ now has men\u2019s and women\u2019s club ultimate teams.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cheer Up<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Yagging&#8221; was a 1890s phenomenon, where student spectators at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ games created a \u201cperfect bedlam of noise,\u201d according to <em>The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Student<\/em> in May 1894, featuring \u201cfrantic shouting and singing,\u201d near-constant chanting, plus the \u201cblowing of horns, waving of canes, hats, and flags.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paper said that the tumult was more than annoying: It created a \u201cpoorer exhibit of athletic ability because for everyone it requires more nerve power to withstand such a continual strain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How About Dem Apples?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In November 1907, newspapers around the country reported a good deed by seven female ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ students: They helped a local farmer pick his apples \u2014&nbsp;67 barrels in six hours \u2014 before a killing frost. The farmer\u2019s daughter, Grace Harlow, Class of 1910, was one of the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/Screen_Shot_2023-05-12_at_3.24.49_PM-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-153648\" width=\"500\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/Screen_Shot_2023-05-12_at_3.24.49_PM-1.webp 666w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/Screen_Shot_2023-05-12_at_3.24.49_PM-1-250x300.webp 250w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/Screen_Shot_2023-05-12_at_3.24.49_PM-1-523x628.jpg 523w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Grace Harlow, Class of 1910, made national news with her ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ friends by saving her father&#8217;s apple crop in 1907.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>Marysville<\/em> (Ohio) <em>Journal-Tribune<\/em> noted that the women \u201cdonned short skirts [and] put on leather leggings\u201d then climbed all the trees to get the job done. \u201cMr. Harlow declares he will employ the girls next fall,\u201d the paper reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I\u2019m Here for an Argument&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1948\u201349, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ defeated 10 other colleges, including the University of Alabama, Wake Forest, and Texas Christian in the National Recorded Debate, where colleges recorded their arguments, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wire_recording\">presumably on wire recording devices<\/a>, that were sent to opponents, who then recorded counter-arguments. All the records were then sent to judges around the country for ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u200b\u200bThink It Over<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the late 1960s, consumption of coffee had sunk to historic lows, prompting a national ad campaign, including ads in <em>The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Student, <\/em>aimed at the college crowd.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developed by McCann-Erickson (the ad firm that came across poorly in <em>Mad Men<\/em>), the print campaign was called \u201cThe Think Drink.\u201d It tried to crack wise by posing a college-life situation, then offered this tagline: \u201cThink it over, over coffee.\u201d Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou keep flunking your best subject?\u201d<br><em>Think it over, over coffee.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour adviser asks you for advice?\u201d<br><em>Think it over, over coffee.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour last check from home just bounced?\u201d <br><em>Think it over, over coffee.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Your psychology professor lives with his mother?\u201d <br><em>Think it over, over coffee.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1390\" height=\"1390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/2-Screen_Shot_2023-05-12_at_2.53.18_PM.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-153641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/2-Screen_Shot_2023-05-12_at_2.53.18_PM.webp 1390w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/2-Screen_Shot_2023-05-12_at_2.53.18_PM-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/2-Screen_Shot_2023-05-12_at_2.53.18_PM-900x900.webp 900w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/2-Screen_Shot_2023-05-12_at_2.53.18_PM-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/2-Screen_Shot_2023-05-12_at_2.53.18_PM-628x628.jpg 628w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1390px) 100vw, 1390px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This McCann-Erickson ad appeared in <em>The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Student<\/em> on April 9, 1969.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spare Change<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early 1990s, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ offered access to online content through Gopher, which predated the World Wide Web. A campus-wide email in September 1994 announced that that content found on the campus Gopher server might \u201cchange without notice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bowled Them Over&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two different ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ teams went undefeated in the <em>GE College Bowl<\/em> television quiz show in the spring and fall 1961. (Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting to Work<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ purchased land near Russell Street to expand Garcelon Field in the 1930s, the project moved rapidly forward &#8220;with requisite speed\u201d in part because it was the Great Depression, and the project was intended \u201cto aid the unemployed,&#8221; said the <em>ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Alumnus<\/em> of February 1932.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advanced Degree<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The oldest person to receive a ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ degree is 83-year-old Francena Stanton White Morrell, who received hers in 1931, by vote of the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ trustees.
