This edition of This Month at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ pivots from one world into the next. We knew, but didn\u2019t; anticipated, but couldn\u2019t. Not really.<\/p>\n

Perhaps these pictures provide a sense of how life changed on a dime, after the college suspended on-campus classes on March 13<\/a> due to the coronavirus global health crisis. On campus, we\u2019re turning green but keeping socially distant.<\/p>\n

Despite the seismic shift, we conclude our presentation with an upbeat image of connection.<\/p>\n

Following an Olin Arts Center screening of the documentary Big Sonia<\/em>, Bijou Kanyambo ’21 (left) of Austin, Texas, and Abigail Decter ’20 of Los Angeles help a group of Lewiston seventh-graders better understand the film, which tells the story of 91-year-old Sonia Warshawski \u2014 great-grandmother, businesswoman, and Holocaust survivor.<\/p>\n

Part of Assistant Professor of Spanish Stephanie Pridgeon\u2019s course looking at stories of the Jewish and Latinx Diaspora in the U.S., the screening was co-sponsored by the Harward Center for Community Partnerships and the Maine Jewish Film Festival.<\/p>\n

Jack Scribner \u201921 of Falmouth, Maine, scored five goals and Chris Costello \u201921 of Ridgefield, Conn., won 13 of 15 face-offs in the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ men’s lacrosse team’s 14-4 win over Keene State on the evening of March 4 at Garcelon Field. It was the team\u2019s first win \u2014 and last home game \u2014 of the season.<\/p>\n

On March 4, Sukanya Shukla \u201920 portrays Nina in Aaron Posner\u2019s Stupid F#@king Bird<\/em>, \u201csort of adapted\u201d from The Seagull<\/em> by Anton Chekhov, and directed by Tim Dugan, assistant professor of theater. Her performance was offered in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a senior thesis \/ capstone in theater.<\/p>\n

On March 5, Nordic skiing head coach Rebecca Flynn Woods \u201989 poses in the team\u2019s Alumni Gym equipment room with her daughter, captain Kaelyn Woods \u201920. Kaelyn, granddaughter of the late ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ coaching legend Bob Flynn, is the fourth generation of her family to have a great impact on ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ skiing. But her ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ experience has been her own.<\/a> “The focus was on Kaelyn’s experience as opposed to carrying on the big family tradition,” says Becky. “She was very close with my dad so I think that is something she’s always carried with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Day 1 of the 2020 NCAA Championships, in Bozeman, Mont., Kaelyn competed in the 5-kilometer freestyle race, while alpine skier Arie van Vuuren \u201922 of Boulder, Colo., competed in the giant slalom. The second day was canceled due to the emerging global pandemic<\/p>\n

African Fashion F\u00eate<\/h4>\n

It was a wonderful show, with a large cast, reports James Reese, associate dean for international student programs. The four organizers appeared in the show, but \u201clet the many other students be the stars. They were the stars in one of the best shows ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vang\u2019s project was for a linguistics course taught by humanities lecturer Dan Sanford, who is director of writing at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ and of the Academic Resource Commons.<\/p>\n

Before leaving campus, English major Jonathan Farrell \u201920 of Middletown, Conn., gathers friends on March 14 to bind his creative-writing thesis. The thesis wasn’t quite done, but he felt a strong need for the traditional ritual of closure and friendship.<\/p>\n

Later, they shared their thoughts in an email: \u201cIt\u2019s been unprecedented and heart-wrenching for our whole class. These are some of the toughest goodbyes we\u2019ve ever had to make.
