For Essie Martin \u201921, modeling a dress made from trash at the 13th annual Trashion Show was a win-win proposition.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s fun, and it raises awareness about waste,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Martin’s outfit was made from discarded plastic and accessorized with plastic straws once sipped by ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ students and by customers of Dunkin\u2019 Donuts and Starbucks. \u201cWe collected the straws from trash bins for months,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

For the prospective geology major from Newcastle, Maine, walking the runway matched her personal style. \u201cIt\u2019s a fun way to be yourself on a stage. And since you\u2019re wearing trash, it\u2019s gonna be ridiculous no matter what you do!\u201d<\/p>\n

The annual Trashion Show is produced by the student EcoReps<\/a> and, like the prior 12 editions, this year’s was a \u201cnight of fun and ridiculousness and lovely outfits,” says Tom Twist, the college’s sustainability manager.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the underlying thing is, of course, the message: We\u2019re still wasting a lot, and we want to increase awareness of that and of all the things ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ is doing to be more sustainable.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

One of those EcoReps is Liv McCulloch \u201921, an economics major from Sunderland, Mass. \u201cLast year I just watched the show. This year, I wanted to get involved, and get my friends involved,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

So McCulloch teamed up with Sophia Ball \u201921, a psychology major from New Hope, Pa., to design a Wizard of Oz<\/em>-themed outfit made from discarded Halloween costumes modeled by Cassidy Martin \u201919, a European studies major from Wilmington, Del.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople buy things on Halloween that they use once and throw away,\u201d says Ball. \u201cThat was our inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich means there were 35,000 of these disposable thunder stick noisemakers. Who knows what happened to them afterwards?”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For designer Michael Somkuti \u201919, a mathematics major from Ambler, Pa., an interest in pro video gaming, or eSports, inspired his outfit.<\/p>\n

Professional gaming \u201chas been exploding in scale and viewership,\u201d he says, pointing to a recent League of Legends World Championship event in South Korea that drew an audience of 17,000, who rocked the venue with inflatable noise makers throughout the competition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich means there were 35,000 of these disposable thunder stick noisemakers,\u201d he says. \u201cWho knows what happened to them afterwards?”<\/p>\n

Somkuti used similar sticks to make \u201ca kind of jumpsuit\u201d that was modeled by T.J. Emmerman \u201921, a prospective politics major from New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne, it promotes an interest that I love,\u201d says Somkuti. \u201cAnd two, I hope that companies that promote eSports will think about their own environmental impact as they grow. Sustainability is important for corporations to keep in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Third, he adds, \u201cI loved plastering the logo all over it because eSports are super in your face, so I wanted my outfit to be super in your face.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
