  {"id":120385,"date":"2018-11-15T14:30:59","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T19:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=120385"},"modified":"2018-12-13T14:33:20","modified_gmt":"2018-12-13T19:33:20","slug":"bates-at-night-trashion-show-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2018\/11\/15\/bates-at-night-trashion-show-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ at Night: Trashion Show 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Essie Martin \u201921, modeling a dress made from trash at the 13th annual Trashion Show was a win-win proposition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fun, and it raises awareness about waste,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Martin&#8217;s outfit was made from discarded plastic and accessorized with plastic straws once sipped by ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ students and by customers of Dunkin\u2019 Donuts and Starbucks. \u201cWe collected the straws from trash bins for months,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>For the prospective geology major from Newcastle, Maine, walking the runway matched her personal style. \u201cIt\u2019s a fun way to be yourself on a stage. This year, I wanted to get involved, and get my friends involved,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>So McCulloch teamed up with Sophia Ball \u201921, a psychology major from New Hope, Pa., to design a <em>Wizard of Oz<\/em>-themed outfit made from discarded Halloween costumes modeled by Cassidy Martin \u201919, a European studies major from Wilmington, Del.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople buy things on Halloween that they use once and throw away,\u201d says Ball. \u201cThat was our inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhich means there were 35,000 of these disposable thunder stick noisemakers. Who knows what happened to them afterwards?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For designer Michael Somkuti \u201919, a mathematics major from Ambler, Pa., an interest in pro video gaming, or eSports, inspired his outfit.<\/p>\n<p>Professional gaming \u201chas been exploding in scale and viewership,\u201d he says, pointing to a recent League of Legends World Championship event in South Korea that drew an audience of 17,000, who rocked the venue with inflatable noise makers throughout the competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich means there were 35,000 of these disposable thunder stick noisemakers,\u201d he says. \u201cWho knows what happened to them afterwards?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Somkuti used similar sticks to make \u201ca kind of jumpsuit\u201d that was modeled by T.J. Emmerman \u201921, a prospective politics major from New York City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne, it promotes an interest that I love,\u201d says Somkuti. \u201cAnd two, I hope that companies that promote eSports will think about their own environmental impact as they grow.
