But since happiness and well-being are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/worldviews\/wp\/2018\/03\/14\/perhaps-tired-of-winning-the-united-states-falls-in-world-happiness-rankings-again\/?utm_term=.56711ad9864f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harder than ever to come by<\/a>, no wonder that many colleges are doubling down on how best to prepare students to find post-graduation happiness.<a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1260478\/this-college-is-moving-beyond-what-color-is-your-parachute-and-designing-for-students-to-find-purposeful-work\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-115348\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/05\/Screen-Shot-2018-05-04-at-12.15.31-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"106\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/05\/Screen-Shot-2018-05-04-at-12.15.31-PM.jpg 346w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/05\/Screen-Shot-2018-05-04-at-12.15.31-PM-200x61.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Turns out that ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ might be doing a better job than the others. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/ ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ approach focuses on work. \u201cIf you get love and work right,\u201d Spencer tells Anderson, paraphrasing Sigmund Freud, \u201cyou\u2019ve sort of figured it all out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, writes Anderson, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ isn&#8217;t just trying to &#8220;teach kids how to be happy.&#8221; Instead, through Purposeful Work, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ teaches students &#8220;how to figure out the work they want to do&#8221; in their work lives \u2014 a &#8220;key factor in creating happiness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Spencer tells Anderson that the &#8220;source of personal happiness and fulfillment has to be around meaning, and not the psychology of happiness. You find meaning by thinking and acting in the world in a way that aligns with your talents and interests and brings you joy, and makes a social contribution of some kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_115265\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/05\/Purposeful-Work-Atlas-Graphic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115265\" class=\"wp-image-115265 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/05\/Purposeful-Work-Atlas-Graphic-900x506.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/05\/Purposeful-Work-Atlas-Graphic-900x506.png 900w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/05\/Purposeful-Work-Atlas-Graphic-400x225.png 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/05\/Purposeful-Work-Atlas-Graphic-200x112.png 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/05\/Purposeful-Work-Atlas-Graphic.png 1919w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-115265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Since the inception of the Purposeful Work initiative, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ seniors\u2019 confidence in their career-related abilities has increased significantly in all measures.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Anderson explains the program this way:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Students [at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½] can take a psychology class about infancy and listen to guest lecturers, including doulas, nurse practitioners, stay-at-home dads, and brand-new moms, explain why the information in the class is relevant to what they do everyday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">During a five-week Short Term in May, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ offers practitioner-taught courses: One digital marketing course was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/05\/18\/qa-students-click-with-digital-marketing-consultant-ashley-hart-91\/\">taught by a digital marketing consultant<\/a>, while a dancer educated students on the business concerns involved in pursuing a career in the arts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Students can also shadow workers in various fields for a day (many of them ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ alumni) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/08\/17\/slideshow-see-how-students-find-purpose-in-their-bates-funded-summer-internships\/\">funding from the school is available for internships<\/a> in fields that don\u2019t pay, such as non-profits and the arts. Importantly, Purposeful Work seeks to give students who don\u2019t have networks the skills and the experience to build them.<\/p>\n<p>Among the college&#8217;s various Purposeful Work offerings and programs, is a course called &#8220;Life Architecture.&#8221; Taught by ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ psychologist Rebecca Fraser-Thill, one of the program architects for Purposeful Work, the course gives students the skills and self-knowledge they need make the best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2016\/05\/26\/students-in-life-architecture-draw-a-blueprint-for-the-future\/\">marriage of professional and personal fulfillment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI found it comforting that it will be a trial and error process.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Part of that self-awareness is the face that career-building is hardly linear \u2014 a fact that shocks many students. Callie Reynolds &#8217;18 is taking the course this Short Term. \u201cI found it comforting that it will be a trial and error process,\u201d she tells Anderson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always thought you had to have a passion and great work would follow. I was awaiting that a-ha moment,\u201d Reynolds said.
