{"id":105569,"date":"2017-02-03T11:01:38","date_gmt":"2017-02-03T16:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=105569"},"modified":"2017-02-23T13:18:30","modified_gmt":"2017-02-23T18:18:30","slug":"bates-in-the-news-february-3-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/02\/03\/bates-in-the-news-february-3-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ in the News: Feb. 3, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/wgme.com\/news\/local\/presidents-at-maine-colleges-universities-denounce-immigration-ban\" target=\"_blank\">President Spencer<\/a><\/h3>\n<h5>Banning travel harms higher education and the economy \u2014 WGME-TV<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nMedia outlets covering the local angle on President Trump&#8217;s executive order temporarily banning travel from seven Muslim-majority countries <\/span>zeroed in on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/president\/2017\/01\/30\/statement-on-executive-order-regarding-immigration\/\">President Clayton Spencer&#8217;s statement,<\/a> the most forceful issued by leaders of the Maine colleges.<\/p>\n<p>WGME-TV&#8217;s Marissa Bodnar did an on-campus <a href=\"http:\/\/wgme.com\/news\/local\/presidents-at-maine-colleges-universities-denounce-immigration-ban\">interview with Spencer,<\/a> who told the reporter that in &#8220;higher education in particular, knowledge knows no boundaries. The order is antithetical to American values and the principles on which ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ was founded and continues to stand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/2017\/01\/30\/several-of-maines-higher-education-leaders-denounce-trumps-immigration-order\/\" target=\"_blank\">Portland Press Herald quoted Spencer<\/a> first in its roundup story under the headline &#8220;Leaders of Maine&#8217;s private colleges denounce Trump&#8217;s immigration order,&#8221; reporter Noel Gallagher noting that &#8220;top officials&#8221; at the publicly funded University of Maine System &#8220;remained largely silent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcsh6.com\/news\/local\/former-mayor-john-jenkins-says-mlk-continues-to-inspire\/386525189\" target=\"_blank\">John Jenkins &#8217;74<\/a><\/h3>\n<h5>Meeting King moved him from &#8220;burn, baby, burn&#8221; to &#8220;learn, baby, learn&#8221; \u2014 WCSH-TV<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nOn the eve of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, two Maine media outlets, WCSH-TV and <em>The Boothbay Register<\/em>, shared recollections from John Jenkins &#8217;74 about meeting King in Newark, N.J., in 1968, just a week before King&#8217;s assassination.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s one of those things that doesn&#8217;t leave you,&#8221; Jenkins told WCSH-TV&#8217;s Cindy Williams.<\/p>\n<p><em style=\"color: #009779;\">John Jenkins &#8217;74 speaks to WCSH-TV&#8217;s Cindy Williams about how meeting Martin Luther King Jr. affected his life.<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-width: 0;\" src=\"http:\/\/interactive.tegna-media.com\/video\/embed\/embed.html?id=2481531&amp;type=video&amp;title=Former Maine mayor speaks about MLK importance&amp;site=97&amp;playerid=6918249996581&amp;dfpid=32805352&amp;dfpposition=Video_prestream_external\u00a7ion=home\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As president of the South Side High School student council, Jenkins introduced King when he spoke. Jenkins recalled that he and fellow students didn&#8217;t embrace King&#8217;s message of nonviolence.\u00a0King was saying to &#8220;turn the other cheek,&#8221; Jenkins recalled. &#8220;I&#8217;d say, &#8216;You hit me in the cheek, and it&#8217;s on.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The chant in the streets of Northern cities was &#8220;burn, baby, burn.&#8221; Jenkins said that King told his audience to abandon &#8220;burn, baby, burn&#8221; and believe in &#8220;learn, baby, learn&#8221; The message changed Jenkins&#8217;s mind. &#8220;It got me thinking more deeply about my dream, and what I wanted to get out of life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A teacher at Lincoln Academy who lives in Rockland, Jenkins has served in the Maine Legislature and as mayor of both Lewiston and Auburn.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkins is one of the few ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ alums to have met both King and, later while working at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ after graduation, King&#8217;s mentor, Benjamin Mays, Class of 1920.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was truly amazing meeting two men who had such a profound impact on the civil rights movement,\u201d Jenkins told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boothbayregister.com\/article\/lincoln-academy-educator-introduced-mlk-jr-his-new-jersey-high-school-1968\/80745\"><em>Boothbay Register<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/2017\/01\/29\/maine-observer-fond-memories-of-high-school-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bob McAfee &#8217;56<\/a><\/h3>\n<h5>Teachers create a life-long value system \u2014 <em>Maine Sunday Telegram<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nRobert McAfee &#8217;56, former president of the American Medical Association and longtime Portland-area surgeon, wrote an essay for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/2017\/01\/29\/maine-observer-fond-memories-of-high-school-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Maine Sunday Telegram<\/em><\/a> about two of his high school teachers who later became his patients.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Teachers are very special people,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;They not only share knowledge in their field, but also, along with your family and faith community, create your value system, which lasts a lifetime.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McAfee asked a former chemistry teacher who became a patient why he chose McAfee over more experienced surgeons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He replied, &#8216;Robert&#8217; \u2013 for I was forever first and foremost his student, not just his surgeon \u2013 I remember that you could derive the Henderson-Hasselbalch chemical equation better than any student I ever had, so you must be a good doctor!\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Rus Peotter &#8217;75<\/h3>\n<h5>He&#8217;s &#8220;genetically wired&#8221; to help people \u2014 <em>The Republican<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe retirement of Rus Peotter &#8217;75, the 15-year general manager of WGBY-TV in western Massachusetts who got his start at WCBB-TV in Lewiston, prompted a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslive.com\/living\/index.ssf\/2017\/01\/wgby_general_manager_rus_peotter_genetically_wired_to_help_other_people_viewpoint.html\">feature story from\u00a0<em>The Republican<\/em><\/a> of Springfield, Mass.<\/p>\n<p>At a gala to mark his retirement, \u201cthere was no absence of superlatives to describe Peotter. Awesome. Unconventional. Special. Networker,\u201d wrote Cynthia Simison. His wife told Simison that &#8220;I&#8217;m married to a can-do, I-do man. (Paul Schnaittacher \/ WGBY)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Peotter sees his retirement as a changing of the guard. &#8220;Our business is changing remarkably,&#8221; Peotter told Simison. &#8220;I think I&#8217;m smart enough to know what those changes are, and the things that need to be done are going to require two things: a lot of work and a lot of time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Poetter and his wife have recently lost parents. &#8220;Life is precious,&#8221; he told <em>The Republican<\/em>. &#8220;I know how precious it is, and I&#8217;m not sure I wanted to work 12 hours a day, six days a week. It starts to affect how you see things out the window, how you look (at life) in the rear-view mirror.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/primeontheweb.com\/featurestory\/ruspeotter2\/\">a feature for <em>Prime<\/em><\/a>, writer Debbie Gardner recalled Potter&#8217;s start in public TV: running a camera as a ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ first-year for Channel 10&#8217;s bygone Great TV Auction.<\/p>\n<p>As Gardner described it, &#8220;suddenly the camera\u2019s viewfinder caught fire.
