  {"id":105500,"date":"2017-02-01T09:00:58","date_gmt":"2017-02-01T14:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=105500"},"modified":"2017-02-23T13:18:31","modified_gmt":"2017-02-23T18:18:31","slug":"auer-appointed-dean-of-university-of-georgia-school-of-public-and-international-affairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/02\/01\/auer-appointed-dean-of-university-of-georgia-school-of-public-and-international-affairs\/","title":{"rendered":"ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Dean of the Faculty and VP for Academic Affairs Matthew Auer appointed dean of the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/news.uga.edu\/releases\/article\/matt-auer-spia-dean\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Georgia today announced<\/a> that Matthew Auer, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College since 2013, has been appointed dean of its School of Public and International Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Auer, whose appointment is effective July 1, will continue at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ through the end of the academic year on June 30.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis appointment confirms what we have learned about Matt these past four years,\u201d said President Clayton Spencer. \u201cHe is a brilliant and creative academic leader with impeccable judgment, unwavering integrity, and a tireless devotion to the job at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cApparently, these qualities were evident to the University of Georgia, and their gain is most certainly our loss. Under Matt&#8217;s leadership, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ has created a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2016\/02\/26\/digital-computational-q-and-a\/\">Digital and Computational Studies Program<\/a>, successfully recruited exceptionally strong cohorts of scholars into tenure-track faculty positions across the curriculum, and strengthened the college\u2019s approach to teaching, learning, and student success. I am happy for Matt and very grateful for his many contributions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have loved my time at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ and am proud of what we have accomplished,\u201d Auer said. \u201cThe high quality and intense commitment of this faculty are among ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½\u2019 defining strengths. I have been blessed to work with such talented colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Auer added, \u201cIt is very hard to leave ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, but I am excited by the opportunity to combine my interest in public policy with this unique leadership position. Until then, I look forward to working closely with my ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ colleagues to continue our progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Auer, who holds a faculty position as professor of environmental studies at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, is a prolific and widely recognized international scholar and expert in environmental policy, energy policy, sustainable development, and foreign aid. He is an award-winning author of more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/news.uga.edu\/releases\/article\/matt-auer-spia-dean\/\" target=\"_blank\">announcing his appointment at the University of Georgia<\/a>, Pamela Whitten, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, praised Auer\u2019s commitment \u201cto creating extraordinary learning experiences for students while also advancing scholarship and service that has a national and international impact. He is an ideal choice to lead UGA\u2019s highly regarded School of Public and International Affairs into a new era of excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2013\/05\/13\/matthew-auer-vpaa-dean-faculty\/\">Since 2013 at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½<\/a>, Auer has overseen the development of the college\u2019s new Digital and Computational Studies Program and has helped to guide the first expansion of the faculty in more than a decade. Both achievements were announced in February 2016 with the creation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2016\/02\/08\/19-million-gift-commitments\/\">six new endowed professorships<\/a> funded by new gifts of $19 million.<\/p>\n<p>Auer has also overseen the successful recruitment of 28 long-term faculty with approximately nine more to be appointed in the current academic year. Integral to faculty hiring has been ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½\u2019 more robust, better resourced, and more sustainable approach to achieving gains in faculty diversity. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last year Auer announced funding for and establishment of the innovative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2016\/03\/11\/new-270000-grant-will-make-the-student-summer-research-experience-even-better\/\">Summer Science Research Experience<\/a>, a program that funds 15 new summer research positions for students in STEM fields while giving those students a more structured and unifying summer experience with their faculty mentors. ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½\u2019 position in the top 30 liberal arts colleges in the proportion of graduates going on to earn doctorates in the sciences is largely due, Auer said, to the \u201chigh-quality science mentorship\u201d they receive during summer research.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ launched the grant-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/academic-resource-commons\/\">Academic Resource Commons<\/a> to promote learning and skill-building through a peer-tutoring model. Located in Ladd Library and funded by a grant from the Davis Educational Foundation, the dedicated ARC space and grant resources are strengthening the college\u2019s support for writing, peer-assisted learning, and peer tutoring.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, Auer was dean of the Hutton Honors College of Indiana University.
