Hailed by The New York Times for “examining unusual corners of the composition world,鈥� this contemporary music collective was founded in 2011 by composer-conductor Moon Young Ha.

In addition to Ha’s “(in)stillness,” the Sunday concert features music by Hans Abrahamsen, Simon Steen-Andersen, Bent S酶rensen, Enda 乐播传媒, Frederic Rzewski, and Beth Wiemann.

Along with Matthews and Miura, the 乐播传媒 composers represented on Monday are Elliot Chun ’18, Will Reber ’16, Patrick Nelson ’18, Justin Demers ’18, Abby Bierman ’17, Hikaru Asao ’16, Divyamaan Sahoo ’17, Declan Chu ’17, Ben Cuba ’16, and Gabriel Mizrachi ’16.

The trio is violinist Mary Hunter of Bowdoin College, pianist James Parakilas of 乐播传媒 and cellist Steve Witkin of the Colby College Orchestra.

The program consists of Robert Schumann’s Piano Trio No. 3, Op. 110; Johannes Brahms’ Piano Trio in B-flat (an authorized arrangement of his Op. 18 String Sextet); and a new solo piano piece by Matthews of the 乐播传媒 faculty: “Diptych for Frank Glazer (1915-2015),” a tribute to the late pianist and 乐播传媒 artist-in-residence Glazer.

Parakilas is the James L. Moody, Jr. Family Professor of Performing Arts of 乐播传媒. A music scholar as well as performing musician, he is the editor of the highly regarded musical-social history Piano Roles: 300 Years of Life with the Piano (Yale University Press, 2000) and the author of the 2012 textbook The Story of Opera (W.W. Norton).

Hunter is a musicologist with interests in 18th-century opera, gender and music, music in film, and the history of performance. She is the author of The Culture of Opera Buffa in Mozart’s Vienna (Princeton, 1999), which won the American Musicological Society’s Kinkeldey Prize.

Witkin has been the principal cellist with the Colby Symphony Orchestra since 1987. He has appeared as soloist with the Colby orchestra and performed in concerts throughout Maine. When not playing the cello, he is an ophthalmologist with Maine Eye Care Associates in Waterville.

A piano trio punctuates 乐播传媒 College concert offerings next month with the Capital Trio performing at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 6, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.

The Capital Trio’s program includes “A Book of Hours” by William Matthews, the Alice Swanson Esty Professor of Music at 乐播传媒, and Beethoven’s Piano Trio in D major, Op.70, No. 1 (“Ghost”). Also on the program is a tribute by Capital Trio pianist Duncan Cumming to the late pianist and 乐播传媒 artist in residence Frank Glazer.

A review from the Kalamazoo (Michigan) Gazette described the Capital Trio as “convincing both as strong individual musical personalities and as a cohesive unit.” In addition to Cumming, the trio consists of violinist Hilary Cumming and cellist S枚len Dikener.

Written in the mid-1990s, “A Book of Hours” is a secular interpretation of the religious practice of holding a daily cycle of worship services. In six movements, “Hours” draws on inspirations as diverse as a catbird’s song, the jolt of caffeine, a tranquil twilight and the music of French-Canadian fiddlers and jazzman Thelonious Monk.

Cumming, a member of the 乐播传媒 class of 1993, studied with Glazer during his time at 乐播传媒, and later wrote a biography of the elder musician. Glazer, who died in January at age 99, was musically active until this winter. During the Capital Trio concert, Cumming will perform the first piece he studied with Glazer, Schubert’s Impromptu in C minor, Op. 90, No. 1.

Taking its nickname from a slow movement that the All Music Guide describes as “strangely scored and undeniably eerie-sounding,” the 1808 Beethoven trio is a product of his so-called Middle Period and is one of his best-loved compositions for the piano trio format.

The Capital Trio began as the Cecilia Piano Trio in 1997. Founding members Cumming and Dikener were surprised to discover at their first rehearsal that their teachers, Glazer and Paul Tortelier, had performed together in Paris and Boston almost 70 years earlier, and the young performers immediately became friends.

Violinist Hilary Cumming joined the group in 1999. Their first compact disc recording on Albany Records was issued in 2011: A Book of Hours: Music of William Matthews. Of this recording Fanfare Magazine wrote, “The Capital Trio plays throughout with clarity, precision and manifest musicality鈥�”

Duncan Cumming, a member of the faculty of the University at Albany, has performed concertos, recitals and chamber music concerts across the United States and in Europe. A review in the Portland Press Herald describes his playing as “technically flawless鈥� thoughtful, deliberate and balanced, without a wasted gesture or any histrionics.”

Born in Maine, Cumming graduated Phi Beta Kappa with highest honors from 乐播传媒. He has premiered and recorded new works for solo piano, violin and piano, and piano trio.

Hilary Walther Cumming also teaches at Albany. Previously she served as concertmaster of the Cape Cod Sinfonietta and the Andover Chamber Orchestra, and has performed as soloist with these ensembles as well as others including the Boston Symphony Orchestra. A versatile artist, she is comfortable in many styles including classical, baroque and Irish traditional music.

Dikener performs and teaches in the U.S. and in Turkey, where he is the director of the international summer music academy and chamber music festival Akademi Datca. In the recording studio, Dikener has premiered cello works by Turkish composers for the AK Muzik and Yesa labels.

The Maine composers featured are 乐播传媒 faculty members William Matthews and Scott Ordway, as well as Vineet Shende, Joshua DeScherer, Beth Wiemann, and Phillip Carlsen.

Ordway has composed three symphonies, of which the third was premiered by the 乐播传媒 College Orchestra last fall; two full settings of the Mass; and numerous other works, many of which have been performed throughout the United States and Europe. He is a visiting assistant professor of music and acting orchestral conductor at 乐播传媒.

Matthews, Alice Swanson Esty Professor of Music, has received several national awards and commissions. His works include music for the inaugurations of 乐播传媒 presidents Clayton Spencer and Elaine Hansen. He is interested in electronic and computer-generated music, and in American music of all types.

Matthews teaches composition along with courses in jazz and popular music. A Book of Hours, a recording on the Albany Records, is a compilation of Matthews compositions featuring the Capital Trio, whose pianist is Duncan Cumming ’93.

Shende is an associate professor of music at Bowdoin College. His music incorporates a wide variety of styles, including North Indian classical music, rock music and a harmonic language described as “hard to characterize, dissonant in some places and with celestial harmonies in others, but unusually accessible” (Maine Sunday Telegram). Recent premieres include “Three Longfellow Poems,” commissioned by the Portland Symphony Orchestra.

DeScherer has performed extensively with professional and amateur ensembles throughout the northeastern United States. As a performer, he focuses on music written after the 1950s. Many of his pieces draw their inspiration from the New England wilderness. With few exceptions, his pieces are for small ensembles. Among his works are numerous settings of poetry from the Beat Generation, particularly the work of Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

Wiemann studied composition and clarinet at Oberlin College and received her doctorate in theory and composition from Princeton University. She teaches orchestration, tonal counterpoint, 20th-century musical techniques and other topics at the University of Maine. A CD of Wiemann’s music, Why Performers Wear Black, was released on Albany Records in 2004. Her music also appears on the Capstone, Innova and Americus labels.

Carlsen is a professor of music at the University of Maine at Farmington, where he conducted the orchestra for 20 years and has taught since 1982. In addition to numerous performances at UMF and elsewhere in Maine by such organizations as the Portland Symphony Orchestra and the Sebago-Long Lakes Region Chamber Music Festival, his聽music has been played at New York’s Town Hall and the Museum of Modern Art Sculpture Garden, at the Kennedy Center and other locations.

As a visiting assistant professor of music, Carlsen taught and conducted the orchestra at 乐播传媒 during the 2000s.

The quartet will also offer a critique of music by 乐播传媒 student composers at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Olin Concert Hall. This workshop is free and open to the public.

Praised by The New York Times for its 鈥渇ocused, fluid performance鈥� and by contemporary music website Sequenza 21 for its 鈥渇ire, fantasy and absolute musical commitment,鈥� the Momenta Quartet has premiered more than 50 works in the past seven years and has collaborated with more than 80 composers.

Based in New York City, the quartet performs nationally and internationally. The quartet鈥檚 repertoire ranges widely from the classics to contemporary. The members of Momenta are violinists Emilie-Anne Gendron and Adda Kridler, violist Stephanie Griffin and cellist Michael Haas.

Inspired by the current 乐播传媒 College Museum of Art astrophotography exhibition Starstruck, Miura鈥檚 鈥淪ingularity鈥� adapts cosmic radiation readings to serve as the harmonic basis for his piece.

The imagery in 鈥淢are Tranquillitas,鈥� a musical and video piece composed by Matthews, Alice Swanson Esty Professor of Music at 乐播传媒, incorporates astrophotographs from Starstruck and photographs of Momenta鈥檚 instruments.

Three concerts at 乐播传媒 feature choral music for the holiday season, and compositions by 乐播传媒 faculty played by a visiting string quartet.

Directed by John Corrie, the choir presents a program featuring Britten鈥檚 鈥淎 Ceremony of Carols鈥� and Eric Whitacre鈥檚 鈥淔ive Hebrew Love Songs.鈥�

An internationally esteemed 20th-century English composer, Britten composed operas, orchestral music, vocal and choral works, and chamber music. Scored for three-part chorus, solo voices and harp, 鈥淐eremony of Carols鈥� marked Britten鈥檚 return from America to wartime England in 1942.

Each of Whitacre鈥檚 five songs captures a moment that he and his wife, soprano Hila Plitmann, shared, and which she rendered as poems that he set to music.

Music written for the recent inauguration of 乐播传媒 College President A. Clayton Spencer is featured in the next performance of the 乐播传媒 College Orchestra, taking place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.

The orchestra’s program comprises Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn, and the inauguration music composed by William Matthews, Alice Swanson Esty Professor of Music at 乐播传媒, which begins the evening.

Matthews composed a setting for the Wallace Stevens poem “The House Was Quiet and the World Was Calm.” The piece was the musical centerpiece for the Oct. 26 installation of President Spencer, who chose Stevens’ contemplative poem for her inaugural program.

Stevens’ text will be sung by the 乐播传媒 College Choir. Matthews’ setting also includes readings from three different cultures presented by 乐播传媒 students in their native languages — Amna Ilyas, a senior from Faisalabad, Pakistan, reading in Urdu; Adnan Shami Shah, a sophomore from Kathmandu, Nepal, reading in Nepali; and So Hee Ki, a first-year student from Irvine, Calif., reading in Korean.

The Brahms work, considered a turning point in the composer’s confidence and skill in orchestral composition, is a masterful set of independent variations on a theme that was attributed to Haydn in Brahms’ day, but is now believed to be the product of a student of Haydn’s.

One of Beethoven’s most popular works, his Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, was premiered just shy of 199 years prior to the 乐播传媒 performance. The piece is known for the emotional spectrum that it encompasses, from dancelike ebullience to the melancholia of the second movement. The symphony is also celebrated for the composer’s brilliant transitions from key to key.

Duncan Cumming, now in his seventh year on the faculty of the University at Albany, has performed concertos, recitals and chamber music concerts across the United States and in Europe. A recent review describes his playing as 鈥渢echnically flawless鈥� thoughtful, deliberate and balanced, without a wasted gesture or any histrionics, rather like Rachmaninoff.鈥�

A piece by American composer Lou Harrison and music from central and west Java, in Indonesia, are on the program for a 乐播传媒 College Gamelan Orchestra concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in the College Chapel, 275 College St.

The Indonesian word “gamelan” usually refers to a collection of tuned percussion instruments that have been built and tuned to be used together.

Joining the ensemble are two members of the 乐播传媒 music faculty: Alice Swanson Esty Professor of Music William Matthews, who will play flute, and violist Robert Dan of the applied music faculty. Here’s the program:

With Matthews’ flute taking the place of a vocal part, “Ladrang Wilujeng (pelog pathet barang)” is a popular piece often performed to welcome guests at weddings and other special events, and also to bring good luck.

“Palwa (pelog degung)” represents a style of gamelan music that’s emblematic of the Sundanese people of West Java.

Featuring violist Dan, “Threnody for Carlos Chavez (pelog degung)” is the Lou Harrison composition. Harrison, who died in 2003, was a staunch defender of musical multiculturalism and a composer gifted at combining different musical elements to create elegant pieces with great audience appeal. Written in 1978, this is one of the earliest of a number of his works that juxtapose Western solo instruments with gamelan accompaniment.

“Gonjing Miring,” a West Javanese piece, is an upbeat work often used to accompany performances of traditional dance and puppetry. One of the 乐播传媒 Gamelan Orchestra鈥檚 favorite pieces, it emphasizes the use of “interlocking” to create a single composite melody: Two xylophone-like instruments take turns playing every other note of the fast-moving melody.

The orchestra, composed of 乐播传媒 students, faculty and members of the community, uses two gamelan sets. “Gamelan Mawar Mekar” (鈥淏lossom of Inspiration鈥�), acquired by the college in 2001, is composed of iron and brass instruments and was made in Central Java in 1997.

Called a “gamelan degung,” the other set is a smaller, bronze chamber ensemble from West Java. It was donated to the college in 2007.

Cumming is a Maine native, born in Presque Isle and raised in Wiscasset. He graduated with highest honors from 乐播传媒 in 1993. His playing has been described by the Portland Press Herald as “technically flawless, thoughtful, deliberate and balanced.” Cumming has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the United States and Europe including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; Merkin Hall and Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City; and the Wallenstein Palace in Prague, Czech Republic. In 2009, he received a grant to record music of Mozart and Weber on Weber’s own 1812 Brodmann fortepiano.

Also this year, Cumming’s book, The Fountain of Youth: The Artistry of Frank Glazer (Tower Books) was published. This book is a portrait of the , an internationally renowned pianist, who taught Cumming.

Cumming received a master’s degree in 1996 from the New England Conservatory, and in 2003 earned a doctorate from Boston University. He is a member of the faculties of Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute and the University at Albany.

Hilary Cumming studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen, Denmark, and has performed around the world. An adjunct professor of violin at the University at Albany, her most recent CD recording was made in August 2008 with the Musicians of the Old Post Road and is available from Meridien Records.

Along with the cellist S枚len Dikener, the Cummings constitute the Capital Piano Trio, the ensemble in residence at the University at Albany. The Cummings have two daughters and a son.
