ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College is partnering with the Androscoggin Unified Emergency Management Agency, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, Central Maine Medical Center and Lewiston city services, including the fire and police departments, in an emergency training exercise at the College’s Underhill Arena from 7 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 20.

The training exercise scenario will be based on a mock ammonia release. Underhill, which houses a skating rink, stores approximately 700 pounds of ammonia for use in making ice.

Underhill and sections of the adjacent parking lot will be closed during the exercise. Merrill Gym and the track will still be available for use.

The exercise will provide training in responses of fire, police, Cobra Team (a combined HazMat and evidence collection team), Lewiston Public Works, the 911 Communications Center and ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½. It will be the first large-scale field exercise ever conducted by the city of Lewiston.

Other participating facilities include Russell Park Manor, D’Youville Pavilion and United Ambulance. A training consultant company, Life Safety Specialists, will facilitate the exercise.

This training will allow ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½’ Security and Campus Safety office to test the outdoor emergency notification speakers located around campus. A brief test message will be sent through the speakers during the exercise.

No roads will be closed and no businesses will be affected by the exercise, but the public can expect to see 75 to 100 public safety personnel working around Underhill Arena, some in hazardous materials suits.

Funding for the event was provided through a federal Homeland Security Grant.

When ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College environmental coordinator Julie Rosenbach places cartons marked “Clean Sweep” in the college’s dorms each spring, students know just what to do.

In those cartons and at the college’s ice arena, they drop off small furnishings, electronics, sports gear and other useable stuff they won’t take along when they leave campus this spring. These goodies will be offered for sale at Clean Sweep, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½’ annual “garage sale” that keeps truckloads of useful items out of the waste stream and raises money for nonprofit organizations in the region.

ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ is one of a number of colleges and universities nationwide that benefit both the environment and their communities each year by selling possessions donated by students as they head out at the end of the academic year.

ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½’ event has become a tradition on campus and in the region. Different nonprofits participate every year and the boxes Rosenbach places in dormitories are always filled to overflowing.

“People look forward to the sale. They expect it,” Rosenbach says. “And they really like being a part of it.”

This year, at least 10 nonprofit organizations will be taking part by collecting goods from around campus, helping organize the sale or volunteering at the event.

In 2008, more than 115 people from 14 local nonprofit organizations volunteered 1,000 hours of collecting, sorting, cleaning, organizing, pricing and selling items. Less than 1 percent of sale items ended up in the trash, and the sale raised nearly $12,000 for participating nonprofits.
