Ensemble Mise-En. (Moon Young Ha)

Music by 乐播传媒 students and faculty, including Associate Professor of Music Hiroya Miura and Alice Swanson Esty Professor of Music William Matthews, constitutes one of two forthcoming programs by New York City’s Ensemble Mise-En.

In 7:30 p.m. performances in the Olin Arts Center, the group offers music by Danish and American composers on Sunday, Nov. 15, and by a dozen 乐播传媒 composers the following evening. Hailed by The New York Times for “examining unusual corners of the composition world,鈥� this contemporary music collective was founded in 2011 by composer-conductor Moon Young Ha.

In addition to Ha’s “(in)stillness,” the Sunday concert features music by Hans Abrahamsen, Simon Steen-Andersen, Bent S酶rensen, Enda 乐播传媒, Frederic Rzewski, and Beth Wiemann.

Along with Matthews and Miura, the 乐播传媒 composers represented on Monday are Elliot Chun ’18, Will Reber ’16, Patrick Nelson ’18, Justin Demers ’18, Abby Bierman ’17, Hikaru Asao ’16, Divyamaan Sahoo ’17, Declan Chu ’17, Ben Cuba ’16, and Gabriel Mizrachi ’16.

Jason Tsichlis, a composer and 乐播传媒 College senior, premieres his Mass in D-flat Major on May 21. The concert is open to the public at no cost.

A setting for sacred texts from the Liber Usualis, a collection of commonly used Gregorian chants, the mass is written for an unaccompanied mixed choir. Tsichlis will conduct the performance, making the event a double debut for this student from Winchester, Mass.

An art and visual culture major, Tsichlis composed the four-movement mass as an independent study, working with John Corrie, director of the 乐播传媒 College Choir and artistic director of the Maine Music Society. “I naturally chose to write a mass because of the form’s important role in the history of Western choral music,” Tsichlis says.

Stylistically, the piece reflects specific composers more than any broad genre such as Romanticism. “I draw on composers such as the Renaissance masters Palestrina and Lasso, and then Mozart, Schubert, Liszt, Chopin, Debussy and Biebl,” he says. “Two specific pieces I found quite influential are Mozart’s Requiem in D minor and Schubert’s Mass in G major.”

The 18 singers will include members of the college choir and of three 乐播传媒 a cappella groups, the Merimanders, the Deansmen and the Manic Optimists.

The students, enrolled in a beginning music composition class taught by William Matthews, professor of music, will perform an hourlong program including the following selections: “It’s a Song” for vocal trio and guitar by junior Nenden Stillman; “Three Lazy Boys” for three pianos and three pianists by Taro Hagiwara; “Hard Time” for vocalist and guitar by sophomore Alexander Budney; an untitled song for vocalist and guitar by sophomore Scott McAuliffe; “Variations on ‘Autumn Leaves’ ” for solo piano by junior Ethan Rowe; “The Feast” for rock band by junior Chris Anton; “Mt. Veena” for instrumental trio by junior Nils van Otterloo; “Longing” for solo piano by junior Neva Corbo Hudak; an unnamed piece by junior Carin Edwards-Orr; and “Aria from the Toilet Opera,” a work in progress for vocalist, pianist and assorted sounds by Matthews, whose work ranges from traditional forms to the avant-garde.
