Slideshow: Trashion Show proves that your trash is another’s fashion treasure

Just when you figure that a student’s take on pop culture begins with Miley Cyrus and ends with Caitlyn Jenner, you hear from Kevin Tejada ’17.

A regular designer for the annual Trashion Show, Tejada, of Mount Kisco, N.Y., looked at his model, Elise Krims ’16 of Concord, Mass., on Wednesday night and quipped that “if Barbarella and Madonna had a child, this would be her.”

Held in the packed Gray Athletic Building, the ninth edition of the show once again featured wearable runway designs created by students from trash, recyclables, and junk. Kirk Read, professor of French and francophone studies, was the MC.

The event was presented by the college’s EcoReps, trained student leaders who work toward a more environmentally sustainable �ֲ��ý.

While it’s common for an elementary school classroom to learn about a specific college, as a pathway to higher college aspirations, these first-graders at Equitas Academy in Los Angeles have made �ֲ��ý their own. Indeed, though �ֲ��ý was chosen as their classroom college at random, they’ve made the most of the chance acquaintance. Their teacher, Madelyn Hashemi, created the cheer, which the class sings every week in front of the school. They also spent time early in the year learning about �ֲ��ý. “My scholars know the mascot is the bobcat and can tell you interesting facts about the animal,” Hashemi says. “They know that the college is in Maine, diagonally across the U.S. They have seen pictures of the campus, sports and classes from the website. They are beyond thrilled to have had a true connection with the college.” Equitas Academy is a K–2 charter school in Los Angeles, and this clip is courtesy of �ֲ��ý parent Joe Pagano P’14, who visited the school while working on a marketing communications project involving several U.S. charters that are associated with . Darwin anniversary series continues with Flock of Dodos

The year 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of naturalist Charles Darwin and the 150th publication anniversary of The Origin of Species, the book in which Darwin set forth the theory of evolution.

During the 2008-09 academic year, �ֲ��ý College and the Lewiston Public Library are commemorating these anniversaries with Darwin at 200, a series of events illustrating the importance of Darwin’s theory to our understanding of life on Earth and to human culture.

The series, which began earlier this month with a reading-discussion series at the , continues at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in the Lewiston Public Library’s Callahan Hall with a screening of the 2006 film written and directed by Randy Olson.

In February (date, time and venue to be determined), the series presents the British Broadcasting Corporation documentary. Also from 2006, this piece examines the 2005 court case against the Dover, Pa., school board, which attempted to inject intelligent design into the public school curriculum. The film presents commentary by proponents of both evolution and intelligent design.

Science historian presents the lecture “Charles Darwin: After the Origin and Before the Descent,” focusing on Darwin’s correspondence relating to his Descent of Man and The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. A visiting scholar in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at Cornell University, Dean speaks at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, at a �ֲ��ý location to be announced.
