Marching as a team of one — between Kyrgyzstan and Chinese Taipei — of Larnaca, Cyprus, drew an extended shout-out from NBC announcers Mike Tirico and Katie Couric during opening ceremonies last Friday night, Feb. 9.

Here was the exchange:

Tirico: “Dinos Lefkaritis, alpine skier, is the one athlete representing Cyprus. He’s on the ski team for the Bobcats of �ֲ���ý College, in Lewiston, Maine. So Maine can root for Cyprus here in South Korea.”

Couric: “�ֲ���ý College: Bryant Gumbel’s alma mater.” [Gumbel is a member of the Class of 1970.]

Tirico: “A guy you know pretty well.”

Shortly after he paraded into Korea’s PyeongChang Olympic Stadium, The Associated Press released a story and photograph of Lefkaritis carrying the Cyprus flag.

“Dinos Lefkaritis, a junior at �ֲ���ý College, carries the flag of Cyprus during the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics,” noted the AP story, which was published by several thousand news media outlets and portals worldwide. “Lefkaritis, an engineering and economics major and the , will compete in the alpine events.”

As the headline in the said, “There’s only one Winter Olympian from Cyprus, and he goes to �ֲ���ý College.”

On Friday, NBC’s Portland affiliate, WCSH-TV, , who recalled how his friends at �ֲ���ý were sending him texts and snaps of him as he paraded at the opening ceremonies.

Carlisle said Phelps’ real impact will be evidenced in coming years. “The Olympic market changed, not just Michael — but the Olympics themselves, the way we look at them, the way they will be presented,” said Carlisle, whose stable of Olympic swimmers also includes Portland’s Ian Crocker, world record holder in the 100-meter butterfly. They will all benefit from Phelps’ effort, though Carlisle said it may take some time.

Indeed, Carlisle and Phelps continue to sort through a tidal wave of offers. ‘I’ve been doing this for a while,’ Carlisle told the WSJ, ‘and I didn’t think I’d be super-surprised at what was going to happen here. But I am actually.’

�ֲ���ý College graduate Andrew Byrnes and the Canada men’s eight captured the gold medal on Sunday at the Shunyi Rowing–Canoeing Park, Canada’s first medal in the event since 1992.

Byrnes, a Toronto native and resident who graduated from �ֲ���ý in 2005, becomes the first former �ֲ���ý athlete to earn an Olympic medal. He and his crewmates become the first world champion crew to follow up with Olympic gold in 35 years.

“I am extremely lucky to have been able to win gold in my first Olympics,” Byrnes said via e-mail. “We were confident going into the regatta, and winning was justification for the long hours of work we had put in over the last four years.”

A second-year veteran of the Canadian men’s eight, Byrnes is also the newest member of the boat. Byrnes’ ascendance to the country’s top eight has coincided with an impressive run of success, including a gold medal in the 2007 FISA World Championships and three World Cup gold medals since 2007.

Canada led wire-to-wire and finished in 5:23.89. Taking the silver was Great Britain, while the United States, winners of the gold in 2004, took the bronze.

“Before the race, I was calm,” said Byrnes. “This was our 10th 2K race together, so we knew we needed to just execute one more top performance. The one thought that did flash into my mind while we were in the blocks was, ‘Well, this next 2000m is the point. This is the point of everything we have done up to now.’”

For Byrnes, there was little mystery as to what made Canada, the odds-on favorite to win gold, the superior boat in the Olympic final.

“We work harder in practice than any other crew out there,” he said. “It’s not just that our coach writes a hard training program, but guys commit to it.”

The Canadian eight hasn’t lost a race over the past two years, and it dominated its opening heat Monday, defeating second-place Poland by seven seconds. Canada’s semifinal time of five minutes, 27.69 seconds in that race advanced it straight to Sunday’s final.

Byrnes, who was a standout rower at �ֲ���ý, joins the list of former Bobcat athletes who have competed in the Olympics, and the second rower, after Mike Ferry ’97, who competed in the double sculls at Sydney in 2000.

“Although �ֲ���ý is a Division III school, it has a very strong athletics program, and the rowing team has the attitude and rigor that is characteristic of the top rowing programs in the country,” said Byrnes.

The �ֲ���ý Olympians list includes Justin Freeman ’98, a Nordic skier for the U.S. at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, and Nordic skier Nancy Ingersoll Fiddler ’78, who competed at Calgary in 1988. Harlan Holden, a member of the Class of 1913 who attended �ֲ���ý for two years, competed in the half mile at the 1912 Summer Games in Stockholm (Read the article about him in the August 10, 2008 Worcester Telegram & Gazette), while his �ֲ���ý teammate Vaughn Blanchard ’12 competed in the 110-meter hurdles at Stockholm. Runner Arnold Adams ’33 was a member of the U.S. team at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics but did not compete due to a foot injury.

Andrew Byrnes ’05 is a member of the Canadian men’s eight crew that captured the gold medal Aug. 17 during the 2008 Olympics — Canada’s first medal in the event since 1992.

“We’ve pushed each other so hard and have such a great mentality on this team, it’s very confidence-inspiring,” he said. “And I feel very fortunate to be rowing with these guys, being someone at his first Olympics.”

After earning a physics degree at �ֲ���ý, Byrnes went to the University of Pennsylvania and earned his master’s degree in mechanical engineering. “I knew I had to finish schooling before I got to rowing full time because it would be tough to go back after rowing,” said Byrnes, who holds dual U.S. and Canadian citizenship.
