乐播传媒 College President A. Clayton Spencer announced today that Joshua McIntosh, dean of academic services at Johns Hopkins University, will become vice president of student affairs and dean of students at 乐播传媒 effective Aug. 1, 2014.

In his new position, McIntosh will play a leading role in shaping the student experience and campus culture. He will be a member of the president鈥檚 senior staff, and an important priority will be working with faculty to knit together more closely academics and life outside the classroom.

McIntosh is currently the dean of academic services at Johns Hopkins, where he oversees seven departments, including the registrar, student disability services and multicultural affairs. He has previously held management and leadership positions at Harvard and Syracuse universities.

“The 乐播传媒 culture 鈥� built on a history of inclusivity and diversity 鈥� offers powerful opportunities in student life,” McIntosh said.

McIntosh will lead a staff of approximately 45 in the Dean of Students Office 鈥� a team that oversees, among other things, student life, the residential program, off-campus study and campus security. The office also plays a vital role in helping students strike a balance between the intellectual rigor of the classroom and their co-curricular pursuits.

At Johns Hopkins, McIntosh led investment in programs designed to better support first-generation students and low-income students. He and his team also used information technology to facilitate data-driven decision making; he led the development of a plan to deepen and broaden student engagement with public service; and McIntosh helped lead an initiative to generate new support for social entrepreneurship and innovation.聽Prior to Johns Hopkins, he served at Harvard and Syracuse in the areas of residential life, housing, assessment, fraternity and sorority affairs, student activities, policy, finance and human resources.

McIntosh鈥檚 appointment as vice president for student affairs and dean of students follows a national search conducted by a committee composed of faculty, students and staff and chaired by Associate Professor of Medieval Studies Margaret Imber. The search included broad outreach to the campus community as well as visits and open forums by three finalists.

McIntosh was born in Lexington, Ky., and received his undergraduate degree from Elon University in North Carolina. He has a master鈥檚 of arts in college student development from Appalachian State University and a doctorate in higher education administration from Syracuse University. McIntosh will be joined in Maine by his partner, William Lumpkin, an associate professor of music and artistic director of the Boston University Opera Institute.

McIntosh succeeds Tedd Goundie, who stepped down on May 31 after 10 years as dean of students. Stephen W. Sawyer, associate dean and director of the off-campus study program, is serving as acting dean of students until Aug 1.

In sharing the news with the college community, President Clayton Spencer said, 鈥淚 am deeply grateful to Tedd for leading our student life program with exceptional thoughtfulness and a steady hand during a time of transformational change in the residential dimension of the liberal arts experience.”

Spencer said that Goundie, who spent 23 years in teaching and in student life at Swarthmore College before coming to 乐播传媒 in 2004, “has been a wonderful partner to me during my first year on campus under sometimes very challenging circumstances. I have been extremely impressed by his depth of concern for our students, his nuanced judgment in every situation, and his impeccable integrity in all that he undertakes. I have learned a great deal from Tedd, and I am very pleased that he will remain in his role through this academic year.”

In 2004, Goundie said that the goal of his work as dean was to help 鈥渆nsure the development of the whole individual, equipping graduates with critical intellectual skills to pursue their passions with joy and commitment.鈥�

Under Goundie鈥檚 leadership, the college addressed a range of residential life issues and created proactive ways for students to play a larger role in improving residential life.

The college strengthened its junior adviser and residence coordinator programs, increased leadership development opportunities for students and expanded its diversity programming.

The Code of Student Conduct was revised and a bystander intervention program was initiated to moderate risky student behavior. Students have taken on more of the planning and execution for orientation programming, and AESOP 鈥� the student-led orientation program that brings first-year students together in small groups for off-campus experiences at the start of the year 鈥� has been expanded, with 70 percent of first-year students now participating.

At a time of heightened awareness of the importance of the residential experience in a liberal arts education, Goundie played a major role in the successful planning of the 152-bed residence hall at 280 College St., which opened in fall 2007.

Goundie sought to keep the enterprise of learning at the forefront of the building program and design. As he told 乐播传媒 Magazine in 2005, at 乐播传媒 “your living space is also where serious academic work happens. I don鈥檛 think you can underestimate the effect this [new residence] can have on student life at 乐播传媒.鈥�

Included in 280 College are two study rooms for individual or small group study, as well as a multipurpose room that can be used for review sessions or small lectures or seminars. With a central, open lounge with a fireplace, a well-planned kitchen and combined study and social spaces, 280 College is a popular campus residence.

Under Goundie鈥檚 leadership, the college addressed a range of residential life issues and created proactive ways for students to play a larger role in improving residential life.

Goundie’s other accomplishments in the academic sphere include the development of advising for the new general education curriculum, regularization of services for students with learning disabilities and improvements in the system for early warnings about academic performance.

Associate Professor of Art and Visual Culture Ned Harwood has served with Goundie on the college’s Committee on Academic Standing. Harwood said, 鈥淚 am often struck by the complexities and difficulties of Tedd鈥檚 demanding job as dean of students. It is a job in which, I imagine, one can go from exhilaration and satisfaction to frustration and heartbreak in the space of a couple of hours.”

Harwood added that the position “requires someone who is generous and patient, clear-eyed and resilient, responsible and good-humored. It also requires unimpeachable integrity. Tedd brings all of those skills to bear as we navigate through the petitions in our meetings, and in doing so he has made those meetings a high point of my week.鈥�

Reflecting on his 10 years at 乐播传媒, Goundie said, 鈥淢uch of our most meaningful work in student life happens when students run into trouble. While those metrics have moved in the right direction over the last decade, some dramatically, I measure success one student at a time.

鈥淢ost students don鈥檛 ever need to see me, but I think of those who faced serious problems, who sat on the couch in my office, talking it through. I feel both great satisfaction watching these students walk across the stage a year or so later to accept their 乐播传媒 diploma, and truthfully, admiration for the resilience of these students in the face of the obstacles they overcame so they could succeed.鈥�

A 26-year veteran of student life in small residential liberal arts colleges, Goundie will share plans for the next phase in his career in the months to come.

When We Were the Kennedys聽(Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012) is the story of how a family, a town and then a nation mourn and find the strength to move on. Living in Mexico, Maine, in 1963, the Wood family is much like its close neighbors, Catholics and immigrants dependent on the fathers’ wages from the Oxford Paper Company.

But when Monica’s father suddenly dies on his way to work, her mother and the four deeply connected Wood daughters are set adrift.

This wrenching memoir has gotten attention nationwide. The Washingtonian wrote, “Wood’s gorgeously wrought new book . . . is a sharp, stunning portrait of a family’s grief and healing, and it also offers a refreshing lens through which to view the [assassination of President John F. Kennedy], as his family’s loss helps the Woods feel less adrift in their own sea of anguish.”

As this year’s assigned reading for the incoming first-year class at 乐播传媒, Wood’s book was a good fit. “Wood’s thoughtful and affecting memoir gives marvelous insight into a community similar to Lewiston-Auburn, with vivid depictions of the multiple cultures that coexist in the area,” says Kirk Read, associate dean of the faculty and professor of French and francophone studies.

“She gives particular insight into the lives of working-class families who depended on the mills and who survived the boom and bust over decades.” Wood contemplates French Canadian and Irish immigrant cultures, the health of the Androscoggin River and the role of the Catholic church in a mill town, all relevant to 乐播传媒’ surrounding communities.

Wood also examines the iconic status of the Kennedys during the 1960s and the Maine politics that played out in parallel to the national scene. Figures such as U.S. Sen. Edmund S. Muskie, a member of the 乐播传媒 class of 1936, figure in the background of Wood’s memoir.

Winner of the 2013 Maine Literary Award for When We Were the Kennedys, Wood explains her storytelling roots: “My father and my mother’s parents came from Prince Edward Island in Canada, and brought with them the island tradition of storytelling,” she says.

“Although my sisters and I were the first generation in the family to go to college, I think of my background as a literary one. My father had a lilting island brogue and beautiful grammar; the notion that stories had to be told in a certain way was something I learned early. My grandfather used to sing long, melodramatic, novelistic ballads, another island tradition.”

Wood’s other books include Any Bitter Thing聽(Ballantine Books, 2005), Ernie’s Ark聽(Ballantine, 2002) and My Only Story聽(Ballantine, 2000).

Dear Students,

As you know, we expect to experience very strong winds tonight and tomorrow with accompanying heavy rain. Various offices of the college have been gearing up to manage the challenges posed by the hurricane. Specific advice from the Deans of Students is listed below in case the electricity fails. In addition to this advice, please know that our thoughts are with friends and families to the south who are bearing the brunt of the storm. We wish them well and urge students to bring to our attention any special situations that arise as a result of the storm.

1. Classes: Classes will take place as scheduled unless cancelled by the faculty member.
2. Fire safety: If electricity fails, after several hours the system that transmits information to the Central Fire Station may not fully function, but local alarms and detectors will continue to function. As a result, students should leave the building as usual and then call 911 if a fire alarm goes off, followed by calling Security at 786-6111. As always, candles should never be lit in a campus building.
3. Personal safety:聽At the risk of saying the obvious, people should stay inside at the height of the storm, stay clear of tall trees on the quad and elsewhere, and stay away from any downed wires.
4. Campus safety: 聽The electronic card access system has a backup battery system and should continue to function even if the power goes out.
5. Charging up: 聽You should charge fully your electronic devices today. 聽Similarly, if the electricity goes out for an extended period of time, the hot water will not be available in many dorms and houses, so use it while you can.
6. Electricity supply: 聽Buildings with back-up generator power include New Commons, the Village complex, 280 College Street, Pettengill, and Security. However, even these buildings will have a limited electricity supply. Elsewhere, the electricity outages, if they occur, will likely vary in different locations on and off-campus. Our hope is that those fortunate to have power will assist students without power, especially if the outage extends over several days.

Michael Martinez of Dallas, Texas, has joined an unusual and innovative 乐播传媒 initiative for enhancing student diversity.

Currently director of a highly successful college access program for high school students, Martinez joins 乐播传媒 as associate dean for admission and student transition on Dec. 1.

As one of two “swing deans” at 乐播传媒, Martinez will play a key role in easing the transition to college for students from groups underrepresented in higher education. This transition, for socio-economic and cultural reasons, can challenge even students with the strong academic credentials that 乐播传媒 requires.

The two deans trade places annually — hence the term “swing dean.” As one goes to Admission to recruit new students, the other moves to the Dean of Students office to support the multicultural and first-generation-to-college students that she or he helped recruit in the previous year.

The extra measure of guidance, familiarity and reassurance that comes from this extended relationship can be decisive in student retention. During a recent 乐播传媒 visit, Martinez lunched with sophomores and juniors who had benefited from the swing dean program.

“Some of them told me that if it weren’t for the swing deans, they wouldn’t be at 乐播传媒 now,” he says. “What a powerfully positive statement for 乐播传媒. That’s why I’m so excited about being a part of it.”

Martinez will join Carmita McCoy, who inaugurated the in 2007. He succeeds Marylyn Scott, who has been appointed to the position of senior associate dean of admission and director of multicultural enrollment.

Now in its fourth year, the swing dean program is distinctive to 乐播传媒 and has proven integral to both the success of multicultural students at the college and 乐播传媒’ increasing attractiveness to those students. In fall 2010, so-called ALANA students — African American, Latino/a, Asian American and Native American — constituted about 17 percent of the entering class, an increase of more than two-thirds over 2006.

For Martinez, word of the 乐播传媒 opening was a welcome surprise. “No other college that I have worked with has created this position, and devoted so much resource to helping multicultural students adjust to college life,” he says.

The fact that the position covers both admissions and student services in a unique way “was a huge draw,” he adds. “It will allow me to understand the full scope of issues that face students when they come to college — but also the full scope of solutions and challenges that face institutions in trying to serve those students.”

“Michael gets these issues from a practical perspective, an intellectual perspective and then a boots-on-the-ground perspective, in that he can talk to the students in a way that shows he knows where they’re coming from,” says Roland Davis, associate dean of students and director of 乐播传媒’ Office of Intercultural Education. Davis co-chaired the swing dean search committee with Nancy Cable, vice president for enrollment and external affairs.

Martinez will be leaving behind the Academic Success Program, for which he had volunteered as a student and which he joined professionally in 2006 as an adviser. ASP helps predominantly low-income and minority students in Dallas high schools get into college.

In the 2009-10 academic year, 99 percent of the nearly 1,400 seniors served by ASP were admitted to college. Dartmouth, Middlebury and Wellesley colleges — and 乐播传媒 — were among the schools admitting ASP participants.

The program works closely with liberal arts colleges, Martinez says, because “our students oftentimes ultimately discover that colleges like 乐播传媒 are their best-fit schools.” In part, that’s because of the resources, “like 乐播传媒’ swing dean position, that they can provide students.”

Sponsored by 乐播传媒’ Committee on Homophobia and Institutional Change and the Office of the Dean of Students, Brother Scars and Strange Fruit features E. Patrick Johnson, assistant professor of English at Amherst College, and Bryant Keith Alexander, assistant professor of communication studies at California State University. Johnson and Alexander will use autobiography, ethnography, poetry, music and visual media to question notions of an authentic black identity, masculinity and sexuality.
