“Dance” is the word that members of the Bonney Science Center construction team like to use when they’re discussing the complex logistics of sustaining the building’s progress.

An example of that complexity was scheduled for this week, as technicians for the Finnish elevator manufacturer KONE were expected to start installing Bonney’s lift. The elevator won’t go into service until sometime next spring — but it needs to be installed now because progress on other fronts depends on it. Assembling the elevator could take up to a month.

It’s quite a two-step: Before drywall installers and painters can finish their work, ֲý project manager Chris Streifel explains, elevator doorframes and other components need to be in place. “That’s quite a bit of work when you’ve got five stops,” one of them being on the first floor, where the elevator will be able to open toward either the public lobby or service areas at the back of the building.

Another do-si-do in the Bonney dance involves the strip of construction site adjacent to Campus Avenue. While bricklayers working for Maine Masonry have all but finished the east, south, and west sides of the building, that north side will have to wait (despite a few bricks that have been deceptively staged there in order to throw Campus Construction Update off the trail).

That’s because the local firm Gendron & Gendron, subcontractor for Bonney project site work, has begun implanting catch basins and other drainage features on that side, Streifel says. “Then there will be some foundation walls and slabs for the entrance,” he adds — concrete pads that underlie the finished approaches to the building. That will firm things up underfoot for accessing the science center.

After the north side, “they’ll move around the building and do that at all the entrances,” with the Nichols Street side next in line. Hopefully by that point, the coast will be clear to move the bricklayers and their Hydro-Mobile self-elevating staging around front, cha-cha-cha.

With the Bonney dance floor getting mighty crowded, as Van McCoy might have said, construction management firm Consigli Construction has also laid on an evening shift for certain trades — notably the painters, who work for Portland, Maine–based Van De Graaf Painting Co. The second shift began on Oct. 5, and since then, in fact, the painters have worked only that shift.

“That’s a pretty big move that’s going to benefit the project in a couple of ways,” says Streifel. “One of them being just more efficiency,” as some trades, like the painters, are more productive when “they can really spread out and not feel like people are coming across their work area constantly.

“And then, as we peak out on the number of people on site every day, to be able to give everybody some more distancing options is also a plus” from the standpoint of Consigli’s management of COVID safety protocols, Streifel adds. About 100 workers representing more than a dozen trades are on site these days, says ֲý construction administrator Jacob Kendall. 

Even before the second shift was laid on, by the way, long days and six-day weeks were common for workers on the Bonney project.

Getting back to the north side, a vertical framework is in place to support the curtain wall of the Beacon, one of the building’s two signature features facing Campus Avenue. Subcontractor Oakes & Parkhurst of Augusta, Maine, is cutting each of the 30 glass panels to fit its specific location, and that glass should appear within a few weeks. And it’ll be hard to miss: With each panel measuring about 44 by 102 inches, the curtain wall will be 47 feet tall and 22 wide.

So what’s the second big feature on the north wall? (Or third, if you count those occasions when we have the official 8-foot Campus Construction Update stepladder set up in the roadway.) That’s the so-called Monumental Stairs, and there’s news there, too, as all of the structural steel is now in place for this dramatic spiral stairway.

And this too will be the location of an eye-catching glass curtain wall. “That’ll be the last major opening to be closed in,” rendering the building virtually weathertight, says Streifel. He estimates completion of that glass work by early December.

The Bonney interior remains a buzzing beehive. Mechanical work still dominates the basement and fourth-floor penthouse, where a coming attraction is the placement of a rubber-like membrane floor in the open well that houses an air chiller and an emergency generator.

In between top and bottom, the heavy action is now on the second and third floors — the continuing drive to hang and prime drywall, rough in utilities, etc. Not that the first floor is a ghost town, but it’s somewhat quieter and different trades are heading in — cable pullers for phone and data, tilers, flooring installers, and others.

Fitness al fresco: Meanwhile, across campus from the science center, two short-term projects have come to fruition in recent weeks.

Even before the coronavirus pandemic lent a new importance to outdoor activities, the college has been interested in expanding its facilities on that front. And now Athletics, the B Well health program, and Facility Services have teamed up to build an al fresco fitness park on a grassy patch between Underhill Arena and the Wallach Tennis Center.

Boasting five types of exercise infrastructure, the $65,000 park was begun on Sept. 9 and completed Oct. 16. Looking ahead during the summer to the start of school, “we knew that indoor fitness and recreational spaces would be limited” because of COVID-related guidelines for social distancing, explains Scott Lehmann, assistant director of athletics for facilities and recreation.

“We wanted to promote outdoor physical fitness opportunities as a means to support student, faculty, and staff well-being, and take advantage of the outdoor resources that we have on campus.”

A company called ActionFit supplied the workout stations: Pull-up bars and pushup bars, both in assorted heights; parallel bars; and for jumping, a “log hop” station and a set of plyometric steps in three heights.

“I’ve been a big user” of such facilities elsewhere, says Lehmann.

The park is a stop on the college’s Bobcat Fitness Trail. Anchored at Merrill Gym, this mile-long loop includes the Lake Andrews path on its course across campus and features six designated sites for various exercise breaks. And the fitness trail, Lehmann adds, is part of a larger network that Athletics and the B Well campus wellness program have collaborated on. 

While the park is open to individuals now, “we do hope to do some programming there in the warmer months,” such as classes to introduce the exercise stations to new users.

The park is paved with rubber tiles 2 inches thick and 20 inches square. These serve three objectives, explains Paul Farnsworth, the Facility Services project manager who oversaw the project. First, the shock-absorbent rubber reduces the risk of injury in case of a fall. Second, with a couple of the workout stations being suitable for folks with mobility impairments, the tiles are ADA-compliant.

Finally, there simply needed to be some sort of solid surface on the site. “We didn’t want the fitness park to turn into a mud pit,” Farnsworth notes, adding that a substantial drainage system underlies the park. (And revealing to Campus Construction Update a fundamental problem with our own fitness facilities.) St. Laurent & Sons Excavation of Lewiston did the site work.

Not far away from the fitness park, members of the Facility Services grounds crew spent a recent week fixing a longstanding problem along the walkway to Merrill Gym. Led by Mike Fox, the team widened a long gravel strip that borders the gym wall and is intended to break the momentum of water cascading off the roof during storms. Such features, called drip edges, curtail the erosion of adjoining grass and the splashing of runoff-borne grime onto the gym wall. 

The original drip edge “wasn’t working correctly,” explains Fox. So the grounds crew widened it by two feet, for a total of eight, and rebuilt the end of the drip edge by the gym entrance. They also regraded and reseeded the grass between the drip edge and the path. “If there’s no grass there to hold the soil in place, it gets washed away,” says Fox.

The rebuilt terminus of the drip edge by the Merrill entry is worth a close look. Removing some used granite curbstones from the ֲý storage center on Strawberry Avenue, Fox’s team used 30 linear feet of this hand-hewn stone to construct a retaining wall where the grass slopes down toward a catch basin. 

“The granite pieces are 20 inches deep by 8 to 12 inches wide, and 9 feet long. So they’re huge pieces of stone,” Fox explains. “You only see 7 inches of it revealed, the other 13 inches is below grade, but that’s what’s holding up the end of the drip edge by the Merrill entry.” He adds that this is a pilot project for improving drip edges at buildings all across campus.

Getting here from there: Equipment needs at the Bonney Science Center construction site are necessitating street closures this week and next. From Sept. 16 through the 20th, Nichols Street is closed where it meets Campus Avenue. The sidewalk remains open and street parking for residents is accessible from Vale Street. The equivalent stretch of Bardwell will be closed the week of the 23rd, again with street parking accessible from Vale.

Pipes down, it’s foundation time: The weeks of plangent clanging and sooty diesel puffs at the Bonney Science Center site ended on Aug. 12 with the driving of pipe pile No. 260, the last pile that was driven to stabilize the clay layer underlying the site.

The end of piledriving freed up the remaining perimeter for construction of the building’s foundation, which had begun in late July. It also meant farewell to the two piledriving cranes that had towered over the site most of the summer.

Performed by Consigli Construction, the firm managing the Bonney project for ֲý, the foundation work has gone stunningly fast. As we’ve described before, the pipe piles were filled with concrete, and capped with steel plates. They were then topped with a load-transfer platform made of crushed stone wrapped in fabric.

Then foundation footings were placed: Forms were fabricated from wood and flat panels, and rebar was inset (by specialists known as rod-busters). And then the forms were filled with concrete.

That process is cool to watch, but doesn’t hold a candle, or a diesel puff, to the making of the foundation walls. Again, it’s a matter of assembling forms and rebar and applying concrete, but the scale makes a difference. This is striking simply because the foundation hole is deep, so the walls are high (reminding one of a certain Ike and Tina Turner hit from the 1960s).

Where until now we’ve been watching humans and machines toiling in the muck of marine clay, there are suddenly smooth concrete walls standing tall, or at least up to ground level, and looking something like a building.

As a side note, we were interested to learn that there is no fastening, so to speak, between the load-transfer platforms and footers, nor between the footers and the foundation walls. Tremendous weight alone keeps those foundation parts together. (So it’s a relief to know that the physics department’s anti-gravity experiments will remain in Carnegie Science after Bonney opens for business, in autumn 2021.)

Foundation progress would have been quick in any case, but delays caused by piledriving complications, as previously explained, have added urgency. “They’re working longer hours and working Saturdays in ways that they might not have without the extended time on the pile driving,” says Chris Streifel, Bonney project manager for ֲý.

By this week, the foundation wall at the Nichols Street end of the site was poured, the forms and rebar were in place for the long wall along Campus Avenue and a bit of the Bardwell Street side, and footings were in place or in progress a short ways beyond the wall.

The biggest gap in the foundation thus far is along the south side. At the moment, that’s the location of a wooden stairway for bipedal access to the foundation floor and an earthen ramp for heavy equipment. That ramp’s days are numbered, but Consigli is pondering the timing of its removal. Once it’s gone, the ability to drive a big excavator, say, down into the hole will go with it. But Streifel notes that even post-ramp, a relatively small machine like a Bobcat (the non-mammalian kind) could be lowered into the pit by crane.

As the footings and then the walls have wrapped around the foundation hole, other concrete creations have been appearing in the middle of it: notably, in the big pit-within-the-pit that the construction team calls the “cofferdam.”

(A cofferdam is usually a work space created within a body of water — for instance, to repair a seawall — by making a sheet-piling enclosure and pumping it out. The Bonney cofferdam, which is the biggest of several pits-within-the-pit, gets its nickname from the sheet piling temporarily holding up the clay walls.)

This space will ultimately contain the base of the Bonney elevator shaft and tanks for holding varieties of waste water awaiting discharge into the city pipes. On Sept. 4, we were lucky to be loitering next to the construction fence when the first of the three tanks, a large precast concrete model, was lowered into place.

This was accomplished by a yellow telescoping-boom crane, from Cote Crane Service of Auburn, and by workers on the ground who used ropes — and, at least once, a steady one-handed push — to manuever the big box into place.

Also happening in the cofferdam and the smaller pits is the creation of several load-bearing piers, evidenced now by their concrete forms.

What else are we watching at the Bonney site? Components of the basement floor could appear this month — a vapor barrier, and a sheet grid to reinforce the concrete floor slab.

Possibly starting this week, all the concrete walls that will contact soil need to be waterproofed. That’s the precursor to dumping in dirt to backfill the gap between the foundation walls and the massive sheet-pile retaining wall that lines three sides of the foundation hole.

But, as Streifel explains, that gap will be filled only so high for now. That’s because of both the pressure that soil will apply to the foundation walls and the interactive nature of the building’s structure. The walls “will rely on the pushback from the first-floor slab to hold them from caving in,” he says.

But the slab isn’t there yet. “So they’re looking at backfilling about a third of the way up over the next several weeks. And then they’ll have to wait until after the first-floor slab is in place to backfill the rest of the way. That’ll be probably late October.”

Now, what was the other thing we wanted to mention? Cheese? No, wrong update. It was steel! — we could, Streifel says, see structural steel start to fly at Bonney by late September or early October.

Strike out the bands: As restoration work continues at the Peter J. Gomes Chapel, the construction fence surrounding the building will stay up through winter, reports ֲý Project Manager Shelby Burgau.

The construction zone footprint may shrink a bit, Burgau notes, but Gomes will remain off-limits into 2020.

Masons for Consigli Construction, which is wrangling the Gomes project as well as the science center job, have largely finished restoration of the exterior masonry facing the Historic Quad. All the granite wall surface has been repointed, and most of the precast stones replaced.

The focus now is on the west or College Street side, where the granite repointing is nearly done and sections of precast band courses that need replacement are being chiseled out. Also being replaced are the steps at all the side entrances, including the footers that support them.

Burgau points out that moisture damage is concentrated on the buttresses, which are especially susceptible because they have three surfaces exposed to the elements and less exposure to warmth, which would drive out moisture, escaping from the inside. The precast buttress capstones have taken a particular beating in the 105 years of the building’s existence.

New traceries, replicas of the originals, are now in place in the two arched windows on the Quad side. Still to be done are the two arched units on the College Street side, and rectangular windows on both sides.

And what about the Gomes portico, which is missing roof, floor, and the leading edges of its stone walls? The stones will be reset by spring. But the roof and floor will have to wait till next summer and may be the last work done during the restoration. With the stained glass window above the portico scheduled for removal and restoration next year, it only makes sense to keep that space open until the window is back in place.

Batting cleanup: Also overseen by Burgau, the expansion of the sports medicine center in Merrill Gym was finished on time, and the center — now including a dedicated therapeutic exercise space so that athletes don’t have to do their reps in the hallway — is in use.

“We are excited about the upgrades to the sports medicine spaces, and how as clinicians we have more space and tools to incorporate more-modern techniques in the recovery of student-athletes,” says Nick Cooke, assistant director of athletics for athletic performance.

“The student-athletes are excited as well. Typically a student-athlete comes to sports medicine when they aren’t at their best, and we’re seeing a renewed energy when they come in, that this is truly a place that has the space, equipment, and staff for them to succeed in their recovery.”

Finally, dear to the hearts of the ֲý administrators who inhabit Lane Hall, the makeover of the Lane parking lot was complete and the lot open on Aug. 13. The project, managed by Facility Services operations chief Jay Phillips, not only resulted in a much-improved parking surface, but more of it: Parking capacity increased by six spaces.

And for the first time, the Lane lot has a charger for electric vehicles, the fourth such installation at ֲý.

That’s when the lights go out and the fun begins: the famous 4×800 “Blackout Relay.” Flashback to 2001. A windstorm rages outside Merrill Gymnasium. All’s well until the final event, the 4×800 relay. Midway through the first lap, there’s a brief power outage, leading to “one of the most unusual races in state meet history,” as then-ֲý Sports Information Director Adam Levin reported. The outage “plung[ed] the facility into darkness,” Levin said. “When power came back several seconds later, the track was still mostly dark…. The halogen lamps that illuminate the main track, requiring minutes to brighten, remained dark.” After a brief attempt to stop the race, officials let it continue. As head coach Al Fereshetian said then, “I had never seen anything like that in my life. But once those runners decided to continue, there was no stopping them….Everyone said it was the most fun they have had at a track meet in a long time.” A tradition was born, and since then the Bobcats and their Maine opponents always turn off the lights for the meet-ending 4×800. Fereshetian’s tune hasn’t changed since 2001. “It’s crazy. It really is the highlight of the meet and everybody loves it. It really doesn’t matter how it turns out, it’s just the atmosphere that’s created and just the competitive spirit that shows up.” The current Bobcats embrace the tradition as a memorable part of what it means to be a ֲý track athlete. At 6:45 on Tuesday night in Merrill Gymnasium, students flex their muscles, train their bodies, and exercise parts of their minds untapped by academics.

“It’s really just a puzzle,” says Sam Onion ’20 of Wayne, Maine, a geology major, as he takes on the climbing wall, where the only equipment you need is climbing shoes. “You get to look at the wall and try to figure out how to position your body so that you can make it to the top.”

The wall is at the far end of the Merrill field house, which on this night is otherwise filled with track and field athletes running, jumping, and throwing under the guidance of their coaches.

The Merrill Gym field house is a beehive of athletic activity on Tuesday night as track athletes, tennis players, and wall climbers do their thing.

Onion says he “loves being able to climb every day. Having this space is wonderful for being able to be active during the winter.”

The wall is the “perfect place to hang out while getting better at climbing,” adds Matt Glasgow ’21 of Salt Lake City, a sociology major.

Climbing is often thought of as a solitary endeavor. Not entirely, says sociology major Whitney Hadden ’19 of Manchester Village, Vt., “Climbing in general is a great way to meet people.”

But the individuality of the sport does let you “watch yourself get progressively better at it, which is really fun,” she adds. “It’s also a good way to relax and take your mind off of studying and forget about school for a little bit.”

The inauguration stage was designed by Michael Reidy, senior lecturer in theater and managing director of theater and dance. He explains that presenting the stage as a triangle of sorts — “kicking the stage on an angle,” he says — was done to give spectators an unobstructed view of the platform party, podium and musical performers. Produced by the college’s Digital Media Studios, the video uses photographs taken over seven days with an automated Canon Rebel XS. The images were converted to high-definition (1080p) video using Apple Compressor’s image sequencer, then edited inside Final Cut 7. Slovenski, who retired from ֲý in 1995 after 43 years of coaching, led his Bobcat track and cross country teams to 726 victories, five undefeated seasons, more than 20 State of Maine championships and four New England regional championships.

A memorial service will be held at the ֲý Chapel on Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. followed by a reception at the Benjamin E. Mays Center on campus.

At a Sept. 4 campus ceremony attended by several hundred ֲý alumni, faculty and staff members, students, friends and Slovenski family members, ֲý College dedicated the indoor track at Merrill Gymnasium in honor of Slovenski.

“Walter Slovenski’s years of service to ֲý and his commitment to his family, to his student-athletes, to the importance of competition, and to achievement are all emblematic of the highest standards and expectations,” ֲý President Donald W. Harward said at Saturday’s ceremony. “ֲý is proud to have had the opportunity to be influenced by his decades of dedication, professionalism and humane good will.”

Slovenski combined competitive zeal, deep care for his student-athletes and a spirited sense of humor and fun to bring out the best in his performers.

“The Slovenski name is synonymous with track and field excellence,” Director of Athletics Suzanne Coffey said at the dedication. “Whether watching him chase alongside and cajole an athlete, or seeing him offer a word of advice and encouragement to a younger coach in the department, it was easy to see the fire in this man’s competitiveness and the humor in his soul. The Slovenski legacy is unparalleled.”

Born April 13, 1920, in Dupont, Pa., Slovenski left school after the seventh grade to join his father as a coal miner. One day, a local high school track coach, Jack Daugherty, saw Slovenski perform at a local summer field day and convinced his parents to enroll him in high school. A star athlete at Cherry Hill (Pa.) High School who led his football team to a 10-0 record in 1939, Slovenski was later the national prep school long jump champion at Seton Hall Prep.

After spending three and a half years in the Navy, Slovenski attended Syracuse University. While there, Slovenski was an All-America baseball player, a two-way football player whose name still appears in the Orangemen’s record books, and a member of the track and field teams, competing in the long jump and high jump.

At the Sept. 4 ceremony, Auburn resident and former ֲý assistant track coach Allen Harvie, a 1965 ֲý graduate, read remarks written by Slovenski, who was too ill to attend. “The ֲý community helped Ruth and me raise six children,” Slovenski wrote. “I’d like to thank every ֲý track athlete for enrolling at ֲý and making such terrific contributions to our track team. Everything I ever accomplished I have to give credit to Jack Daugherty. I learned through him the lessons of sports, the great joy of helping others through athletics. He single-handedly transformed my life.”

After graduating from Syracuse in 1949, Slovenski earned a master’s degree at New York University and coached track at Oneonta State College for two years before coming to ֲý in 1952 as assistant football and head track coach. From 1957 to 1960, ֲý compiled a 30-meet winning streak, including victories over schools like Boston University, the University of Connecticut and the University of Maine. The Bobcats’ state track titles in 1957 and 1958 were their first since 1912.

In 1958, Slovenski resurrected the long-dormant ֲý cross country program and built it, too, into a consistent winner, posting a 9-1 record by 1963 and winning the first four New England Small College Athletic Conference championships between 1983 and 1986.

Slovenski produced 26 All-Americans, including five national champions. Slovenski’s track and cross country teams produced the highest finishes by any ֲý team at an NCAA championship, placing fifth at the indoor track and field meet in 1989 and sixth at the cross country championships in 1977.

Slovenski has been inducted into the Clearfield County (Pa.), Indiana (Pa.) and Lewiston Auburn Sports Halls of Fame, as well as the Maine Running Hall of Fame. He was honored as a New England and NCAA cross country coach of the year. In the 1960s, Slovenski was selected by the Mexican government to upgrade that country’s track programs in preparation for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. A competitor in the World Veterans’ track and field championships in 1989, Slovenski placed sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 123 feet, 6 inches.

He will always be loved dearly by his wife, children and grandchildren for his own magnificent heart and love of family.

Slovenski is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Ruth; three sons, Peter Slovenski of Brunswick, Paul Slovenski of Cambridge, Mass., and Steven Slovenski of Lee, N.H.; three daughters, Patty Slovenski Gannon of Framingham, Mass., Sally Slovenski of Watertown, Mass., and Sue Slovenski Pucko of Webster, N.Y.; and 11 grandchildren.
