On Friday, Nov. 11, high school juniors and seniors from all over Maine are invited to visit ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College for the college’s 25th annual Maine Day.

Starting at 8 a.m., this open house draws students and their parents from as far afield as Aroostook and York counties, typically attracting as many as 150 participants. The program includes campus tours, visits to classes and workshops relating to the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ application process.

“Maine Day is designed to help seniors and juniors with their college search,” says Jared Cash, assistant dean of admissions.

“This year we’re especially excited about it, as it’s our 25th Maine Day and it coincides with the college’s sesquicentennial,” Cash says. “ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ has always valued Maine students as an integral part of our community and our history.”

Maine Day is designed to show Maine high school students what goes on at a liberal arts college on a typical day. Activities begin with a reception at the Edmund S. Muskie Archives, 70 Campus Ave. At this time, visiting students can meet ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ admissions staff, faculty and current students.

Informational programs during the day will include a general overview of ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, workshops on writing college application essays and on financial aid, and student panels discussing campus life and athletics. The program also includes campus tours and opportunities to observe classes.

Such facilities as the Writing Workshop, the Office of Career Services, Olin Arts Center and the Carnegie Science Hall Greenhouse will hold visiting hours. Limited interview opportunities with admissions staff for seniors are available by reservation. Guidance counselors are also invited.

Maine Day honors the relationship between ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ and its home state. “Maine students do very well at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½,” says Belka. “Year after year, students who come from Maine show a work ethic, an attitude that if something is worth doing it is worth doing well.

“In both the academic arena and the personal, extracurricular arena, Maine students are leaders,” she says. “ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ definitely is a better place because of our location in Maine and because of the students who have grown up in Maine.”

The program begins at 8 a.m. in Chase Hall Lounge with coffee and donuts. Participants will meet with the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ admissions staff from 8:30 to 9 a.m. in Chase Hall Lounge. From 10 to 10:45 a.m., students not scheduled for admissions interviews will meet with Wylie Mitchell, dean of admissions at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½. Tours of the campus, admissions interviews, classroom visits and departmental office visits will be available from 9 a.m. to noon.

Leigh Campbell, director of financial aid at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, will conduct an informational session on financing a college education from 1 to 1:45 p.m. in Chase Hall Lounge. A coaches’ reception for high school athletes interested in competing at the college level will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on the second floor of Merrill Gymnasium.

Participants, parents and guidance counselors are also invited to tour the Edmund S. Muskie Archives from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ College Museum of Art from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the George and Helen Ladd Library, which opens at 7:30 a.m.
