With a new year on the horizon, 乐播传媒News has decided to lead you down Memory Lane, social media style, and share 乐播传媒’ Top 10 Instagram Posts of 2019.

If every picture tells a story, what are the stories that 乐播传媒 tells about itself on Instagram?

The popular social media channel 鈥渋s a visual way to inspire feeling 鈥� what it鈥檚 like to be here, especially as a student or an alum, but also as a staff or faculty member,” explains Phyllis Graber Jensen, the college’s director of photography and video and a prolific poster on the college’s Instagram account.

鈥淎nd it鈥檚 a bit of a reality show for all those family members, or prospective students and their families, who might imagine the quotidian 乐播传媒 experience but can’t claim it for themselves.鈥�

Whether on campus or off, Instagram has captured plenty of eyes and imaginations for 乐播传媒. The college’s account totaled 13,518 followers as of Dec. 4, 2019. And here are a few other measures of the college’s Insta presence and popularity in 2019:

• More than 450 posts
• 368 Instagram Stories
• 10.6 million impressions 鈥� the total number of times 乐播传媒 Instagram content was displayed to users
• 189,599 likes
• 1,624 comments

That’s a lot of numbers, and here’s one more. Measured by audience “reach” 鈥� the number of unique users who see a given Instagram post over time 鈥� here are the college’s 10 most popular Instagram posts of 2019.

10. Sept. 4 鈥� Students leave their first classes

It works out neatly that this Top 10 begins with a beginning. Phyllis Graber Jensen, 乐播传媒 director of photography and video, was on Alumni Walk when she spotted juniors Stella Santucci, Thomas Hiscock, and Robbie Hodin back on the move after their first classes of the 2019鈥�20 academic year.

9. May 24 鈥� Class of 2019 group portrait

乐播传媒 photographers traditionally immortalize each student class in pixels when they arrive and again just before they graduate in May, but the imaging team went all out for the May 2019 edition with a time-lapse video, still images, and drone photography.

7. May 15 鈥� African Fashion Show

鈥淢any look at Africa as one country and fail to realize that it is a continent that contains many countries,鈥� Nicole Kanu 鈥�15 told us when she founded the African Fashion Show, then called Inside Africa, in 2012.

Celebrating a continent’s worth of cultures, as expressed through songs, dances, spoken word, and, of course, apparel, the annual show has been chipping away at that misconception ever since.

Samuel Mironko 鈥�21 captured these images depicting the eighth edition of the popular event on May 10. The post reached approximately 9,500 viewers and earned 810 likes.

6. June 16 鈥� Father and son carrying on, then and now

In October 1998, Halsey Platt 鈥�88 was back on campus for Back to 乐播传媒 Weekend with his wife, Julie Sutherland Platt 鈥�88, and their 21-month-old son, Gordon. As Gordon perched happily on Halsey鈥檚 shoulders, classmate Marc Glass took their photo.

Twenty-one years later, 乐播传媒 photographer Phyllis Graber Jensen recreated the image on the occasion of Gordon’s graduation.

The posted reached about 9,800 viewers and attracted 1,485 likes, including one from John Ambrosino ’01, who commented, “This is one of the best 乐播传媒 photos ever!” We agree.

5. Oct. 20 鈥� Women rowers notch fourth Head of the Charles win

鈥淚 think there probably wasn’t a single stretch of that entire river where we couldn’t hear alumni, or we couldn’t hear someone, screaming 鈥樌植ゴ�!鈥欌�� senior captain coxswain Maya Seshan told t after the women’s first varsity-eight made history at the Head of the Charles Regatta.

The rowers captured first place in the Women’s聽Collegiate Eights for the third consecutive time and fourth time overall. 鈥淚t’s not our river, but it felt like it for a little bit,鈥� Seshan said.

3. Aug. 28 鈥� Baptism by bucket begins AESOP 2019

Slop in the name of love? As first-year students meet their trip leaders at the start of 乐播传媒’ Annual Entering Student Outdoor Program, it’s become a rite of passage 鈥� and gesture of solidarity 鈥� for the program coordinators to receive a dousing with nameless ooze at the program’s first meeting.

All told, between the costumes and the buckety baptism, it’s a great way to introduce the newest 乐播传媒ies to the fun side of the college.

2. Oct. 6 鈥� Men鈥檚 soccer brings Hedley Reynolds Cup back to 乐播传媒

Why the “Hedley Reynolds Cup”? 乐播传媒’ fifth president, serving from 1967 to 1989, Thomas Hedley Reynolds came to 乐播传媒 after 18 years as a member of the history faculty at Middlebury, where he was an early coach of the nascent men’s soccer team. He continued his strong support of the game at 乐播传媒.

Samuel Mironko ’21 sprinted the two blocks from a football game at Garcelon Field to the Russell Street soccer field to grab this exuberant team shot.

1. Sept. 20 鈥� 乐播传媒 students and faculty take part in Global Climate Strike

Organized by 乐播传媒’ Environmental Coalition, a large contingent of 乐播传媒 students and faculty joined some 2,000 other demonstrators in Portland, Maine, and millions around the world who went on strike Sept. 20 to demand climate action ahead of the U.N. Climate Action Summit.

In addition to Muskan Verma 鈥�21 of Shimla, India, Environmental Coalition president Dianna Georges 鈥�22 of Clifton, N.H., was another of the dozen or so speakers at the Portland event.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not good enough to just talk about issues and solutions 鈥� we have to really get involved,” Francis Eanes, visiting assistant professor of environmental studies, told 乐播传媒 writer Alexandra Cullen 鈥�20 during the demonstration. “I personally would feel like it鈥檚 the antithesis of what I鈥檓 teaching if I鈥檓 not willing to make space for that in my life.鈥�

3. Nov. 15 鈥� Jared Golden ’11 wins Maine鈥檚 2nd District congressional election

Nine days after the general election, Jared Golden 鈥�11 was declared the winner in Maine鈥檚 2nd Congressional District.

Golden鈥檚 election took more than a week to decide because neither he nor incumbent Bruce Poliquin got a majority, so the election was decided by Maine鈥檚 new ranked-choice voting format.

He’s the second alumnus to win a House seat in 2018, joining Republican Ben Cline 鈥�94, elected to represent Virginia鈥檚 6th Congressional District.

Between the never-ending winter and the stress of finals, early April at 乐播传媒 is not exactly a student’s favorite time of year.

Playing on that vibe, this juxtaposition of images, one taken from Hedge Hall in winter and the other from Hedge in gorgeous autumn, played on the meme 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 love me at my…, then you don鈥檛 deserve me at my….” while reminding students just how beautiful 乐播传媒 was six months prior.

2. Feb. 23 鈥擜 dean’s statement to support civic action

After the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., high school students around the nation held walkouts to protest gun violence, risking disciplinary action by their schools.

Since disciplinary actions are reported as part of the college-application process, many high school students feared that their 17 minutes of protest would affect their acceptance status.

On Feb. 23, 乐播传媒 Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Leigh Weisenburger announced that “乐播传媒 Admission will not penalize you for participating in peaceful protest,” and explained why.

5. March 25 鈥� “Voices of 2018” with Rakiya Mohamed

In an installment of the video feature “Voices of 2018,” double major in biological chemistry and African American studies Rakiya Mohamed ’18 of Auburn, Maine, explains how she balanced two very different subjects.

“What is the point of getting this education if you’re not going to go out there and do something with it 鈥� do something bigger than you with it?” asks Mohamed, who delivered the Senior Address during Commencement.

Last year, men’s lacrosse player Otis Klingbeil ’20 of Columbus, Ohio, took on a team task: keeping his teammates informed about the fickle Maine weather so everyone comes to practices and games with the right gear.

“I didn’t want to have to repeat myself 40 times to the guys on the team,” Klingbeil said. “So I figured, what better way than to start an Instagram account?”

Thus was born a phenomenon:

From Assistant Sports Information Director Aaron Morse, here’s a video about the student-run Instagram account 乐播传媒mlaxweather.

At first, 乐播传媒mlaxweather did only what the name says, providing game-day weather forecasts for players. Klingbeil’s initial posts featured marked-up screen shots from a weather app, plus hashtags like #catsloverain.

But soon, trading on his audience’s knowledge of 乐播传媒 and NESCAC, Klingbeil, the self-styled “chief meteorologist” for 乐播传媒mlaxweather, veered toward humor.

And it turns out that the Bobcats, perennial NESCAC powers, are pretty good when they give comedy a shot.

Mining rich territory covered a few generations ago by National Lampoon and more recently by websites like College Humor and Funny or Die, Klingbeil, along with collaborator Jack Maritz ’18, began offering good-natured videos rich in satire and parody, like “The Most Interesting Cat in the World.” (He asks Security for their IDs.)

In a parody of Matthew McConaughey’s Lincoln car commercials, Charles Harker ’19 drives around a snowy downtown Lewiston before an early March game vs. the Wesleyan Cardinals, drawling nonsensical comments about cats and birds: “In the wintertahm, there are a lotta hungry cats around.”

Halfway through the video, Klingbeil snaps at Fein, “You keeping up with this?”

In another sketch, Klingbeil and Maritz lecture Director of Athletics Jason Fein, a relative newcomer, on the NESCAC pecking order. (The Continentals won’t pose a threat, advises Maritz, because no one makes musket ammo any more.) Halfway through the video, Klingbeil snaps at Fein, “You keeping up with this?”

With nearly 1,000 followers as mid-April, 乐播传媒mlaxweather is the second-largest student-run Instagram account at 乐播传媒. (Tops is the 乐播传媒 Photography Club, 聽with more than 1,100 followers.)

Head coach Peter Lasagna is proud of what his players have created. “It shows that we have smart, funny, and interesting people in our program.” (Ironically, the coach himself is famously Internet-averse: He has no social media accounts of his own.)

With useful information, an authentic feel, and entertaining content, 乐播传媒mlaxweather does what we’ve long been told social media should do: In this case, create community among a group of 乐播传媒 students, families, and friends. Says Maritz, “It’s been a lot of fun to engage the community like this.”

Amidst all the exams, papers, and senior theses to write and bind, a bevy of 乐播传媒 students took time from busy finals-week schedules to put on their artistic hats, snap their best finals-themed photos, and submit them to our annual #乐播传媒Finals instagram contest.

The prize? Instagram immortality itself with a coveted spot on the official Instagram account, curated by Director of Photography and Video Phyllis Graber Jensen, plus a $25 gift card for tasty treats at the Bobcat Den.

The Judges’ Choice photograph by Avril Dunleavy ’15 features fellow alpine racer Kathleen Fitzpatrick ’15 posing between runs during a pre-season meet at Sunday River.

With 395 votes, Jivko Kozarov 鈥�14 of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, has won the popular prize in 乐播传媒鈥� first-ever finals-themed photography contest.

The aptly titled 鈥淏uried in #thesis鈥� depicts Kozarov, an economics major, with his head buried in a stack of senior theses.

He says the shot was a homage to the many hours he spent in the Lindholm Economics Lounge in Pettengill Hall working on his own thesis.

鈥淚t isn’t聽a surprise that I would at times feel buried聽under tons of expectations about my thesis,鈥� he says. 鈥淭he photo is a spontaneous metaphor for this creative process.鈥�

From Dec. 4 through Dec. 11, students were asked to share their finals experiences on Instagram using #batesfinals. The winner, chosen by popular vote on the 乐播传媒 website, will receive a $50 gift certificate to the College Store.

More than 150 photos were submitted, depicting scenes from deep within Ladd Library, mountains of textbooks and endless coffee 鈥� not to mention several striking post-all-nighter sunrises.

Kozarov found inspiration amid the stress.

鈥淚 would often skim over someone鈥檚 thesis and wonder how 乐播传媒 managed to shape that person鈥檚 global perspective. From niche subjects, such as 鈥楥ash Flow and Physical Assets as Determinants of Leverage鈥� through community topics like 鈥楽witching to Biomass for 乐播传媒 College鈥� and popular questions 鈥� 鈥業s there a Hot Hand in Basketball?鈥� 鈥� those seniors have performed with timeless excellence.鈥�

Avril Dunleavy 鈥�15 takes home the Judges鈥� Choice award for her shot of fellow 乐播传媒 alpine skier Kathleen Fitzpatrick 鈥�15 holding her German homework at the top of a slope at Sunday River.

鈥淚 thought it was a good way to show that we鈥檙e student athletes,鈥� says Dunleavy, a rhetoric major and Second聽 Team All-East alpine skier from Salt Lake City.

She photographed Fitzpatrick of Larkspur, Calif., at one of the team鈥檚 pre-season meets, held right before the start of finals.

Finals week Instagram photos suggest that 乐播传媒 students approach this end-of-semester trial as they always have: with snacks, naps and embracing the fact that, yes, misery loves company.

The Communications Office put out the call to students for finals-week Instagram photos a week ago, and the entry deadline was Wednesday night with more than 150 photos given the hashtag #batesfinals.

Readers can vote for the photo they like best, and the winner will be announced on Dec. 20. Prizes include a $50 gift certificate to the 乐播传媒 College Store.
