Here’s a flip version of the fall 2022 issue of 乐播传媒 Magazine, which went in the mail last month.

The cover story and photograph, by Mary Pols and Phyllis Graber Jensen, respectively, of 乐播传媒 Communications, features best-selling children鈥檚 book author and illustrator Matt Tavares 鈥�97, who is taking a creative leap with his forthcoming book, Hoops. Using the graphic novel format for the first time, Tavares tells a story inspired by the true tale of a girls basketball team in mid-1970s Indiana.

Here鈥檚 a flip version of the spring 2020 issue of 乐播传媒 Magazine, which was mailed to safe-at-home Bobcats near and far in recent weeks.

This issue neared its completion as 乐播传媒 moved to remote learning and remote work, so you may find some unintended poignancy in our chronicling of pre-COVID days (it’s certainly there for us). To that end, we’ll be checking in with some of the spring issue’s featured subjects, especially the alumni in Maine whose work and endeavors have a summertime flavor.

By 1914, 乐播传媒 was hitting its stride as a college. And having sent college graduates into the world for nearly 50 years, it was time for some grown-up alumni programming.

Which meant getting a little silly.

1914 was a big year, marking the 50th anniversary of the college鈥檚 transition from Maine State Seminary to 乐播传媒 College in 1864. The college chose to celebrate the semicentennial during Commencement, in June.

The 乐播传媒 Student, doing double duty in those days as both a campus and alumni publication, noted in May that 鈥渢his Commencement of all Commencements should belong to the alumni.鈥�

The big new feature of this alumni-focused Commencement was an Alumni Day, 鈥渁 program of merrymaking by the different classes…such as is carried on at many of our larger colleges.鈥�

And the centerpiece of Alumni Day was an Alumni Parade, a 鈥渉istorico-humorous parade of classes about the field.鈥�

In its buildup to the event, The Student exhorted the classes to portray 鈥渉istorical incidents associated with the development of 乐播传媒, illustrated soberly or unsoberly; 鈥榯hings you did,鈥� wise or other-wise…. Class statistics, mention of members who have won honored places…may well be carried on large cards or any other way. Class banners of olden days鈥hould be there.鈥�

One hundred years later, the Alumni Parade hasn鈥檛 deviated from the 1914 playbook. Stop by the Alumni Walk on June 7 and you鈥檒l see.

Back in 1914, lest a parade seem like a frivolous way to celebrate the college鈥檚 50th, there were sober events, too.

A pageant on the steps of Coram Library commemorated great college events: founder Oren Cheney reading about the burning of Parsonsfield Seminary, the incident that inspired Cheney to found his own school for poor and disadvantaged Maine youth; and the seminary students marching off to the Civil War, 175 of them, including two from Georgia who fought for the Confederacy.

Stepping up to the parade challenge was the Class of 1912. The Student of May 21 noted that class members would dress in all white and assemble 鈥渁 band composed of the men of 1912 who played in the college band.鈥�

The June 11 edition noted that the Class of 1904 鈥渨ill be on hand with something good,鈥� yet the class refused to divulge exactly what that might be. Using a trendy phrase from the early 1900s, the class wanted to conceal their plans until the 鈥減sychological moment.鈥�

While coverage of the first Alumni Day is scant, the 乐播传媒 Bulletin reports a successful event, as 鈥渢he costumes, movements and performances awakened universal enthusiasm and great merriment.鈥�

In contemporary parlance, the first parade fostered greater alumni engagement, and the good feelings carried over to Commencement the next day. In full spring bloom, the campus was, at least to 乐播传媒 eyes, 鈥渢he most charming place in all the world.鈥�

Gearing Up!

Will a week in the wild prepare you for 乐播传媒? Right after their AESOP pre-orientation trips returned to campus Aug. 31, and with traces of untamed Maine still upon them, these first-years posed for photographer Phyllis Graber Jensen. They returned with pots, pads and even some leftover pasta sauce 鈥� not to mention new skills, freedoms and friends.

The photograph invites readers to the essay “Beauty and the Brain” by Laura Sewall, director of 乐播传媒鈥揗orse Mountain and a pioneer in the field of ecopsychology.

What are you doing in this picture?
I am training for endurance: keeping myself on the wall as long as possible.

Why do you climb?
I ask myself that question when I am 500 feet above ground on a vertical rock face, freezing my butt off, knowing that I am two-hour drive away from my cozy bed and delicious Commons food!

I climb because it helps me discover my limits, face my fears and overcome them. It also teaches me how to be both physically and mentally in check.

“Nothing else matters until you get to the top.”

The summit is what we strive for, but the process to it is extremely rewarding. I am in a completely different environment in the vertical world, and nothing else matters until you get to the top.

Last but not least, the people you meet along the way and the stories they share about their adventures has also attracted me to the climbing community.

How does climbing fit into your 乐播传媒 life?
My buddies and I always look for adventures on the weekends 鈥� trying to get on multi-pitch climbs in North Conway, N.H., or pulling on hard sport climbs in Shagg Crag, about 15 miles east of Bethel, Maine.

Does your style differ from other 乐播传媒 climbers?
I am smaller than most climbers at 乐播传媒 (and the rest of the world). I have to come up with different 鈥渂eta,鈥� ways or sequences to do a certain climb, and be more dynamic to reach faraway holds.

Why climb shirtless?
Climbing without a shirt is a big part of the bouldering culture. They say it makes you climb harder. Maybe that鈥檚 true, or maybe they just want to show off their back muscles. I took my shirt off because it was really hot in the gym, and I didn鈥檛 have another shirt to change into before dinner. Plus, I鈥檓 too scrawny to show off anything.
