During the Annual Gathering of the Alumni Association on June 6 at Reunion, three alumnae received association awards for their contributions to 乐播传媒 and to the wider world:

• Dr. Patricia Sullivan Doyle 鈥�79, a longtime rural Maine physician and advocate for health-care reform, was awarded the association’s Alumni Community Service Award for “distinguished leadership and commitment to serving the community in which they live or work.”
• Rachel “Rae” Harper Garcelon 鈥�62, who has served 乐播传媒 alumni as a valued employee and an effective volunteer, received the association’s Helen A. Papaioanou 鈥�49 Distinguished Alumni Service Award for 鈥渢ruly distinguished service 鈥� both in quantity and quality.鈥�
• Emily Buchanan 鈥�89, a painter whose work has been part of a Department of State global visual arts program and featured in the 2014 White House holiday card, was awarded the association’s Sesquicentennial Prize, which honors an alumnus or alumna for 鈥渁 single academic, artistic, or scientific achievement.鈥�

Also during Reunion, the college presented 乐播传媒’ Best awards to seven alumni to honor their Reunion volunteer work:聽 Dwight Harvie 鈥�54, Jonas Klein 鈥�54, Jack DeGange 鈥�59, Michael Nolan 鈥�69, Alicia Hunter Warner 鈥�94, John Harvey 鈥�09, and David Longdon 鈥�14.

And on Friday evening of Reunion, Professor Emeritus of Psychology John Kelsey received the College Key’s Distinguished Service Award during the organization’s annual meeting.

How fortuitous for the small community of Moose River Valley that doctor Pat Doyle landed there 30 years ago and never left…. Here, she cares for a community of roughly 1,000 people with limited staff and resources. Where others would have left after their five-year stint, Pat put down roots and rolled up her sleeves to serve a community in need.

Emily S. Buchanan 鈥�89: Sesquicentennial Prize

The citation for Buchanan鈥檚 award reads, in part:

Complementing [her]t training has been her willingness to work hard, which she attributes to her 乐播传媒 education. In an interview for 乐播传媒, she remarked: “My greatest asset as a painter is that I鈥檝e worked hard and consistently at it over the years. If I hadn鈥檛 had the experience at 乐播传媒, I鈥檓 not sure that I would have had the maturity to pursue my art as I have.”

For many years, Emily has been involved with a U.S. Department of State initiative called Art in Embassies, which places artwork in embassies around the world. It was through this connection that she was commissioned to paint the White House annual Christmas card in 2014.

At the Annual Gathering of the Alumni Association on June 11 during Reunion, five alumni were honored for their contributions to the college, including retired Director of Financial Aid Leigh Campbell ’64 receiving the college’s distinguished alumni service award.

Leigh Campbell ’64: Helen A. Papaioanou ’49 Distinguished Alumni Service Award

The citation for Campbell’s award read, in part:

If you ask alumni from the mid-1970s to the early-2000s about their 乐播传媒 experience, you鈥檒l hear a constant refrain: 鈥淢y family and I wouldn鈥檛 have been able to afford college without Leigh Campbell. He made 乐播传媒 possible.鈥� In his 39 years of service as a financial aid officer at 乐播传媒, most of that time as director, Leigh became a trusted confidant, adviser, and friend to thousands of students.

Catherine “Cat” Djang 鈥�13: David G. Russell 鈥�66 Alumni-in-Admission Award

Diane “Dinny” Felt Swett ’56: 乐播传媒鈥� Best Award

President Elaine Tuttle Hansen has announced four appointments to the 乐播传媒 College Board of Trustees: Alison R. Bernstein of New York, N.Y., H. Scott Bierman of Northfield, Minn., Scott D. Freeman of Newton, Mass., and Kathleen M. Whelan of Boston, Mass.

Alison Bernstein has served as the Ford Foundation’s vice president for the Knowledge, Creativity and Freedom Program since 2002, and has served with the foundation as a vice president, program officer and director since 1982. A former associate dean of faculty at Princeton University, Bernstein is the author of three books, American Indians and World War II: Toward a New Era in Indian Affairs (1991); with Virginia B. Smith, The Impersonal Campus (1979); and with Jacklyn Cock, Melting Pots and Rainbow Nations: Conversations on Difference in the U.S. and South Africa (2002).

Bernstein has published in The Chronicle of Higher Education and several professional journals on issues related to students, transfers from community colleges to four-year institutions, access to higher education for women and minorities, diversity on campus and the impact of women’s studies. She has served as executive editor of Change Magazine, and currently serves on the board of advisors of the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, and as Presidential Advisory Board Member on Tribal Colleges and Universities. Bernstein earned her bachelor’s degree at Vassar College and her master’s and doctoral degrees in history from Columbia University. Bernstein is parent of a 乐播传媒 student in the class of 2009.

H. Scott Bierman has served as dean of the college at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., since 2005. He was chair of the Department of Economics at Carleton from 1991 to 1995 and president of the faculty from 1997 to 2000. Bierman previously served as associate dean of the college for two years, overseeing all academic department budgets and the budgets of all offices that report to the dean of the college, including the Library and Information and Technology Services. He has been an active participant in curricular initiatives that include “Quantitative Inquiry, Reasoning and Knowledge,” “Building the Consciously Creative Campus” and “Visual Culture.”

Bierman’s academic fields of specialization are economics of the public sector and industrial organization. At Carleton, he has taught classes in principles of microeconomics, principles of macroeconomics, intermediate price theory, econometrics, industrial organization, economics of the public sector, game theory, and a variety of specialized senior seminars. His book, co-authored with Professor Luis Fernandez, Game Theory with Economic Applications (1993, substantially revised in 1998) was the first attempt to bring substantial economic applications of game theory into an undergraduate textbook. His current work takes advantage of collaborative research opportunities that exist with students in the emerging area of experimental economics. Bierman earned his bachelor’s degree from 乐播传媒 in economics and mathematics in 1977 and his doctoral degree in economics from the University of Virginia in 1985.

Scott D. Freeman joined with Colony Capital to establish Colony Realty Partners LLC in 2005. He is a principal and serves on the firm鈥檚 Board of Managers and Investment committees. CRP is a real estate advisory firm investing in commercial real estate throughout the United States on behalf of its institutional clients. During the past 14 years, Freeman has been the acquisitions officer for more than 140 properties throughout the U.S. valued at more than $4 billion.

Prior to formation of CRP, Freeman was a partner and director of acquisitions at TA Associates Realty, where he served on the firm鈥檚 Executive Committee and Investment Committee, and chaired the Acquisitions Committee. Previously, Freeman was an asset manager with General Electric Investments, where he managed a diversified portfolio of real estate debt and equity investments and was an asset manager with Aetna Realty Investors, where he specialized in office and retail properties.

Freeman received a B.A. in political science from 乐播传媒 College and an M.M. with concentrations in real estate and finance from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University. He serves on a number of nonprofit boards and is active in numerous industry groups. He resides in Newton, Mass., with his wife Kristine (乐播传媒 class of 1986), and their three children.

Kathleen M. Whelan has taken a particular interest in education since retiring from the practice of corporate and securities law to raise her family. She has worked in the alumni and development offices of independent schools as alumni affairs director and publications editor and has served on committees for long-range planning, capital campaigns, annual fundraising and related endeavors. Parent of a 2005 乐播传媒 graduate, Whelan has served on the 乐播传媒 Ad Hoc Committee on Athletic Fundraising. She is currently a member of the Corporation at Belmont Hill School in Belmont, Mass., and chair of the Belmont Hill women’s lecture series. A lifelong writer, Whelan is working on her second mystery novel.

The new trustees will serve five-year terms. H. Scott Bierman and Joel H. Goober were nominated by the 乐播传媒 Alumni Association and confirmed by the 乐播传媒 College Board of Trustees. Goober was re-elected to his second term as a trustee, but his first as an alumni nominee. Alison R. Bernstein, Scott D. Freeman, and Kathleen M. Whelan were elected by the trustees.

乐播传媒 alumni arriving for their College’s 138th Reunion anticipated traditional revelry and fellowship as well as a chance to honor their own.

Weekend awards granted by the College’s Alumni Association will recognize service to 乐播传媒 and to the world, including honors for a former president of the American Medical Association and a retired U.S. diplomat who helped draw worldwide attention to acts of genocide in Sudan in 2004.

Receiving the Benjamin E. Mays Medal聽for “distinguished service to the larger worldwide community” and “outstanding accomplishment” will be Constance Berry Newman ’56.

As U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in 2004, she and others determined that violence in Sudan’s Darfur region was indeed genocide, so advising then-Secretary of State Colin Powell. In September 2004, Powell for the first time announced those findings to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Dr. Robert E. McAfee ’56, of Portland (right), will receive the Alumni Community Service Award. In 1993, McAfee was the first physician from Maine elected as president of the American Medical Association. His influence is credited with having the AMA consider family violence a medical rather than a social issue, urging the AMA to mount an educational campaign for families and physicians about family violence. During his career as a vascular surgeon he has been outspoken in efforts to prevent smoking and substance abuse and to improve the health of adolescents.

All聽awards will be presented聽Saturday during the聽midday Alumni Awards Ceremony,聽held in聽Merrill Gymnasium聽due to rain.

Longtime 乐播传媒 trustee Barry A.G. Greenfield ’56 (left) will receive one of two Helen A. Papaioanou Distinguished Service Awards. A member and chair of the trustees’ Investment Committee for 10 years, Greenfield, now retired from the board, is credited with bringing professional management standards to the investment of the College endowment, including developing a subcommittee structure to oversee various investments and hire fund managers.

Lynn W. Willsey ’54 and Beverly Hayne Willsey ’55 (right) will also receive a Papaioanou Distinguished Service Award for their long, loyal and talented service to the College.

Lynn, a trustee from 1972 to 2003, served as secretary of the corporation and on committees including Admissions and Financial Aid, Co-curricular Life, Student Affairs and Investment, as well as the Executive Committee. Beverly has volunteered as an officer of the Hartford 乐播传媒 Club, a class officer, a member of her class鈥檚 Reunion committees several times and chair of her class鈥檚 50th Reunion in 2005, an Alumni in Admissions volunteer and a host for mini-reunions and 乐播传媒 dinners. She currently volunteers as a member of the 乐播传媒 College Key, to which she was elected in 1973, and with the Office of Career Services as a career adviser.

Receiving the College’s Sesquicentennial Prize, for extraordinary achievement in the fields of literature or science, is Charles E. Clark ’51 (left), professor emeritus of history at the University of New Hampshire. Author of The Public Prints: The Newspaper in Anglo-American Culture, 1665 – 1740 (1994), Maine: A Bicentennial History (1977, 1990), The Eastern Frontier: The Settlement of Northern New England, 1610 – 1763 (1970, 1983) and The Meetinghouse Tragedy: An Episode in the Life of a New England Town (1998), Clark was tapped to produce a 乐播传媒 history for the College’s sesquicentennial celebrations in 2005. His 乐播传媒 Through the Years: An Illustrated History traces 乐播传媒 history while mirroring larger issues 鈥� including important educational and social debates 鈥� of the last 150 years of American history.

President Elaine Tuttle Hansen has announced five appointments to the 乐播传媒 College Board of Trustees: Robert E. Burke of Boston, Mass.; Marjorie Northrop Friedman of Dallas, Texas; Jennifer L.Guckel of Charlestown, Mass.; Dana Petersen Moore of Baltimore, Md.; and Quoc K. Tran of Omaha, Neb.

Burke is executive vice president and chief operating officer of Boston Properties Inc., one of the nation’s largest real estate investment trusts listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Prior to his appointment to this position, in 1998, he served 12 years as senior vice president and co-manager of the trust’s office in Washington, D.C., where he started his career with Boston Properties in 1979.

Previously, Burke spent more than seven years with the Kennedy Library Corp., where he directed the development of the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. He has also held engineering and management positions with General Electric, SCM Corp. and Harvard University. Burke is a 1959 graduate of 乐播传媒’ dual degree program: He spent three years at 乐播传媒 and two years at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, earning bachelor’s degrees in science and civil engineering, respectively.

Friedman is a 1995 honors graduate of 乐播传媒 who majored in geology. She earned her law degree from Vermont Law School in 1999 and was an attorney at Holland & Knight in New York City until the birth of her first child, in 2001. As a 乐播传媒 alumna, Friedman chaired her 10th Reunion Gift Committee and volunteers for Alumni-in-Admissions.

Friedman and her husband, Peter Friedman of the 乐播传媒 class of 1992, were members of the 乐播传媒 College New York Council until moving to Dallas. They are committee members of The Campaign for 乐播传媒, which has a fund-raising goal of $120 million, and co-chairs of the Mount David Society, an organization of annual donors who put the college first in their philanthropy. In October 2004, the Friedmans received the Distinguished Young Alumni Award, presented for exceptional volunteer service to 乐播传媒 and for career distinction to people who graduated 15 or fewer years ago.

Guckel, a 1988 乐播传媒 graduate who graduated summa cum laude with a major in economics, is a managing partner in the consulting firm Spencer and Bean LLC. Previously she served as chief operating officer for Sentient Jet, a private jet service, and for Circles Inc., a firm that provides life-management services that major corporations extend to their employees. She was also an operations executive for Einstein Bros. Bagels.

After 乐播传媒, Guckel earned a master’s degree in business from Stanford University. She is active in 乐播传媒 alumni affairs as a career services volunteer, a member of the Alumni Council, a subcommittee co-chair for The Campaign for 乐播传媒 and chair of the 乐播传媒 Boston Business Networking group.

Moore, a 1979 乐播传媒 graduate who majored in English, is a partner in the Baltimore law firm of Whiteford, Taylor & Preston. She practices in the areas of product liability, asbestos personal injury litigation and general corporate defense. She received her J.D. degree in 1982 from Washington and Lee University.

Moore was named one of “Maryland’s Top 100 Women” by The Daily Record in 1997 and 2000, and this year was named to that publication’s “Circle of Excellence.” She served as president of the Baltimore-based Monumental City Bar Association and has been honored by the Alliance of Black Women Attorneys and the National Bar Association. She has served on the Alumni Board of Washington and Lee University School of Law, as well as the Board of Visitors for the University of Maryland School of Law. In 乐播传媒 affairs, Moore has served as class president and an Alumni-in-Admissions volunteer, and is a member of the Alumni Council and the College Key, an honorary service society.

Tran, a 1995 乐播传媒 graduate who majored in rhetoric, is an executive at the investment firm Wallace Weitz & Co., Omaha. Previously he worked as an analyst for Northwest Airlines and for Zurich Kemper Investments, where he was prominently involved in launching and managing the Kemper Aggressive Growth Fund. He has also worked at Goldman Sachs Group.

At 乐播传媒, Tran was a nationally ranked debater with his Brooks Quimby Debate Society teammate Chris Tin茅. He was nationally ranked among the top five in American Parliamentary Debate and competed in championships in the United States, England and Australia. He received a master’s degree in business from the University of Chicago in 1999. As a 乐播传媒 alumnus, he has been active in alumni affairs and fund raising, and as an admissions and career services volunteer.

The new 乐播传媒 trustees will serve five-year terms. Guckel and Tran were nominated by the 乐播传媒 Alumni Association and confirmed by the trustees. Burke, Friedman and Moore were elected by the 乐播传媒 College Board of Trustees. 乐播传媒 trustees serve a maximum of two terms.
