Regarded as one of the world’s foremost players of harpsichord and fortepiano, Andreas Staier comes to 乐播传媒 College to perform fortepiano music by Haydn at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.

The concert was originally scheduled for last fall, but postponed because of illness.

Performing on a Walther fortepiano replica built by R.J. Regier of Freeport, Staier will offer the 乐播传媒 audience sonatas and variations by Franz Josef Haydn. He is playing this particular program only twice during his current tour, at 乐播传媒 and at Carnegie Hall.

The artist’s extensive catalog of recordings includes a 2005 collection of this music on the German subsidiary of the Harmonia Mundi label.

Born in G枚ttingen, Germany, Staier studied modern piano and harpsichord in Hannover and Amsterdam. From 1983 to 1986, he was the harpsichordist of Musica Antiqua K枚ln, with which he toured and recorded extensively.

Today Staier performs throughout Europe, the United States and Japan as a soloist and with orchestras such as Concerto K枚ln, Freiburger Barockorchester, the Akademie f眉r alte Musik Berlin and the Orchestre des Champs-Elys茅es Paris. Staier has made many recordings of works from the Baroque through early Romantic eras. His solo work is often broadcast on the BBC.

Collection Project 4: Selections from Alumni Collections: This exhibition, fourth in a series examining works from the permanent collection, focuses on some of the holdings donated by 乐播传媒 alumni. Not a comprehensive survey of alumni gifts, the exhibition highlights collections that have had a significant impact on the museum, underscoring the importance of alumni gifts to the richness of the permanent collection. The museum has invited student curatorial interns from the art and visual culture department to develop an exhibition from within these collections: seniors Molly Richmond, Emma Scott and Annie Svigals, under the guidance of the museum鈥檚 curator, Bill Low, and curator of education Anthony Shostak.

Joel Babb: The Process Revealed: Curated by Bill Low, this exhibition investigates the role of both the act of drawing and the drawings themselves in making a painting. Rather than mere by-products of the act of creating paintings, drawings are engaging, satisfying and instructive in their own right. Pairing preparatory drawings with finished paintings, this exhibition reveals the stages of work that go into a resolved piece of art. Displayed are works from three of 鈥檚 areas of interest: cityscapes, wilderness landscapes and figural works such as history painting.

Barry Nemett: Drawings from Italy: This exhibition presents landscapes made during travels to Italy. , a Mellon Fellow at 乐播传媒 and chair of the painting department at the Maryland Institute College of Art, has received numerous awards including two from the Alfred and Trafford Klots Residency Program to paint in France and a Ford Foundation grant to support his work in Italy.

Back-to-back concerts at 乐播传媒 College explore the music of two composers associated with the formative years of Viennese classical music, Franz Josef Haydn and Luigi Boccherini.

The Parker Quartet becomes a fivesome when sits in for a performance of Boccherini’s “Fandango” Quintet for guitar and strings in a 7:30 p.m. program on Saturday, Oct. 17. The program also includes music by Haydn and Mendelssohn.

Regarded as one of the world’s foremost players of harpsichord and fortepiano, performs fortepiano music by Haydn starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18. Staier will use a copy of a Walther fortepiano built by of Freeport.

Both concerts take place in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. Tickets, at $12 for general admission and $6 for seniors and students, are available at www.batestickets.com. (One hundred free tickets for each concert will be available at the door to 乐播传媒 students on a first-come, first-served basis.)

The has been called “something extraordinary” by The New York Times. The Boston Globe hailed its “fiercely committed performances” and The Washington Post declared it “a quartet that deserves close attention.”

The quartet’s awards include first prizes at the 2005 Concert Artists Guild Competition and the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition. They have performed in such series as Lincoln Center’s Great Performers, the Wolf Trap Discovery Series and Ravinia’s Rising Stars; and at such venues as Jordan Hall and Gardner Museum in Boston, and in New York’s Symphony Space and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Warner, concert hall manager at 乐播传媒, is a multi-instrumentalist whose performances on guitar and lute were described as “ethereal” by the Portland Press Herald. On the Boccherini, he will play a reproduction of a 19th-century guitar by Viennese luthier Johann Anton Stauffer.
