As an alpine skier at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, Micaela Holland ’11 skied at three NCAA Championships.

Five years later, she’s leading the alpine ski team as the youngest head coach at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½. Being young, she says, helps her to connect with her skiers.

“She knows exactly what it’s like to be in our shoes,” says Hannah Johnson ’18 of Incline Village, Nev.

“Once you start coaching, you say things that sound so simple. In reality, when you’re the person doing them, they are really hard,” says Holland, who was the head alpine coach at Clarkson University in 2015-16.

“I’m still familiar with that disparity, so I think that helps me communicate things a little better.”

Liz Thompson finished her remarkable collegiate skiing career with a flourish last week at the NCAA Skiing Championships, hosted by ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½. Sam Evans-Brown ’09 completes a breakout weekend with his second consecutive fifth-place finish in the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Winter Carnival. In March, ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ hosts the 2009 NCAA National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Skiing Championships and partners with two of Maine’s outstanding skiing venues: Sunday River in Bethel and Black Mountain in Rumford.

ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ first-year alpine skier Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) placed ninth out of 58 competitors in the giant slalom on Friday, and 10th out of 58 competitors in Saturday’s slalom, leading the Bobcat alpine team over the weekend at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival at Dartmouth Skiway.

In Friday’s giant slalom, Heldman had a two-run combined time of 1:50.09 to lead the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ men to eighth place out of 10 teams in the event. In Saturday’s slaloms, registered his second top-10 finish in as many days, recording a two-run combined time of 1:36.11 for 10th place out of 58 competitors, leading the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ men to seventh place out of the 10 competing teams. The combined ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ alpine and Nordic ski teams placed sixth out of 13 teams at the carnival.

They were the first two top-10 finishes of the year for the promising freshman, and gave a boost to Heldman’s chances of making the field in the , which ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ will host March 11-14. He currently ranks 15th in both the slalom and giant slalom on the men’s Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association carnival circuit.
