Dr. Moser had an exceptional mind and he was beyond special! I was one of the few Black students on campus in 1969. �ֲ��ý was a different world and the culture a difficult challenge. Doc recognized this and cared for many of us as if we were his children. He became father, teacher, protector and mentor. I was will forever cherish all the incredible adventures and stories we shared! Love! Rest in Power!

I am a professional furniture designer and maker.
I followed Thomas Moser’s career and have always admired his furniture making philosophy and the integrity he brought to the process.

As a young designer, I had the chance to meet him in person once when he attended the opening of the his new showroom in Old Town Alexandria,VA. I brought my portfolio along in hopes that I might get to meet and talk with him. I had questions.
As it turned out, I did have that conversation. He was most gracious, offered some thoughtful advice and was encouraging to this young furniture maker.

Many of my customers have collected Moser furniture in addition to my own custom pieces. Nice to know that I am in good company. He will be missed by many.

I was a student of Tom Moser at �ֲ��ý College in the early 1970’s and, not surprisingly, saddened to learn of his passing. Although I knew him personally for only a relatively short time (a few years), he had a significant influence on my life. When I was a student at �ֲ��ý, he was the debate team coach. From him, I learned how to craft a meaningful argument and present a coherent and persuasive point of view. He was someone who encouraged people to act on their ideas, not just talk about them. It may have been Nike that came up with the saying “Just do it” years later, but I remember Professor Moser as living and professing that credo.

Tom invited students to his and Mary’s restored colonial home in New Gloucester. I visited there several times. I remember getting a buzz on his home-made apple cider and having conversations about all kinds of things that he knew so much about. At one such visit he challenged one of my fellow students who had been a high school track star to a foot race in the back yard. I think he won.

I also visited the nascent furniture shop in the old meeting house in New Gloucester, and took one of his courses on shaker furniture-making there. I have one of his early pieces, an unsigned pine blanket chest. Over the years, I followed the progress of the company, mostly from afar, but with an affinity as if it was around the corner. On occasion, I have visited the Washinton, DC showroom just to see the offerings but also with a faint hope that I might run into Tom there. Of course, that didn’t happen but I took great pleasure in knowing that I knew the man responsible for such craftsmanship.

My condolences go out to Mary, the Moser brothers and their families. Tom Moser led a very meaningful life and left an imprint on mine.

Ave atque vale – hail and farewell – Thomas Moser. For 20 years I lived a few blocks from Moser’s principle showroom in Boston, and never ceased to feel inspired when I stopped by to see his classic and new designs. Pleased to know �ֲ��ý was an important part of his life and that �ֲ��ý students benefitted so much from from his teaching, artistry, and craftsmanship. Delighted that �ֲ��ý recognized Moser with an honorary degree (and this fine article). Finally a tip of the cap to Pete Bysshe ’93 for introducing another generation of students to Moser through his short term course.

I own 17 pieces of Thomas Moser Furnitute , dating back to the mid 1980’s. Each and every creation brings me joy and appreciation for the passion and skills of these wonderful craftsmen.
Thank you , Mr Moser, for all of your efforts and accomplishments .
