David Seltzer (American, b. 1947)聽
Seltzer鈥檚 creative process spans a series of months or years between photographing, collaging, adding text, and toning鈥攄uring which time, his works become visually layered with marks, scratches, and abrasions. Seltzer describes these formal decisions as 鈥渁 sort of tightrope walk,鈥� artistic risks that reflect the fluctuations of his lived experiences. In some corners of his work, pockets of darkness indicating contrast and depth serve as signifiers of physical and psychological chaos. The overlapping techniques in his images form an oscillation of push and pull.
Seltzer graduated from the University of Missouri with a BS in English and Psychology. He has mounted solo shows at the Greenberg Gallery, St. Louis; Galerie Agathe Gaillard, Paris; Yancey Richardson Gallery, New York; and Richard M. Ross Art Museum, Ohio Wesleyan University. Additionally, Seltzer鈥檚 photographs are among the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and International Center of Photography, New York; Asheville Art Museum; Denver Art Museum; and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
