West Coast painter Takako Yamaguchi comes back to ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ to discuss the development of her career in the visual arts. Yamaguchi’s landscapes have been described by Art in America describes as a synthesis of American Modernist painting with the stylized graphics of ukiyo-e prints.

The Los Angeles Times furthers that comparison to include the influence of the abstracted patterns of Japanese textiles and screen paintings. Her newest paintings “celebrate art’s magnificently syncretic history and the ecstatic beauty of the natural world.”

A native of Japan, Yamaguchi received a Presidential Fellowship to study at the Rhode Island School of Design after graduating from ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½. She later went on to earn her MFA from University of California, Santa Barbara. Yamaguchi has exhibited extensively internationally. She is represented in several collections, including the Nevada Museum of Art and the Long Beach Museum of Art.

Yamaguchi has received several notable awards, including a Getty Fellowship from the California Community Foundation, the Gottleib Foundation, and COLA Individual Artist Fellowshhip form the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department.

Rev. Bill Blaine-Wallace, Multifaith Chaplin, will give a talk about “Our Positive Bodies: Mapping Our Treatment, Sharing Our Choices.” This exhibition, originating in Nairobi, Kenya, was launched in 2004 by the Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health Foundation (TICAH), as a way to highlight the gravity of HIV/AIDS in a positive, affirming way.

Blaine-Wallace, will speak about the vital role of museum exhibitions in general and, in particular, how the Our Positive Bodies exhibition impacts life and learning at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½.

Brandy Gibbs-Riley is a highly successful graphic designer, and Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Colby-Sawyer College. After ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, she received her MFA in Graphic Design from Boston University, and studied modern and contemporary Dutch design in the Hague, Netherlands in 2001.

Among her many clients are IBM, PepsiCo, Boston Acoustics, Duracell, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Siemens, Ocean Spray, and The Boston Globe.

Photographer Abdi Roble’s and writer Doug Rutledge’s collaboration together on the Somalia Documentary Project has culminated in the exhibition and book /The Somali Diaspora: A Journey Away. In this talk, they will present their firsthand accounts of how the project began, how they carried it through, and the future projects.

Abdi Roble is a photographer with a vision for social justice. Abdi was born in Magadishu, Somalia in 1964 where he became an international soccer star. After Abdi immigrated to the United States in 1989. he developed a passion for photography. He had already had several shows, including three sponsored by Leica of Japan, Cuba and Europe, when he asked himself how he could use his talent in the service of his people. In answer to this profound personal question, he started the Somali Documentary Project in 2003. Since that moment, both Abdi and the project have been blessed with success. In 2005, he had a show at the Riffe Gallery in Columbus, which has since moved throughout the Midwest. His show, “Against Forgetting, Beyond Genocide and Civil War” was at Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis in 2006. For his artistic success, Abdi has won the Individual Artist Award from both the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Ohio Arts Council and because of his many lectures and educational presentations, Abdi was given the Arts Freedom Award by the South Side Settlement House in 2006. Along with Writer Doug Rutledge, his book, The Somali Diaspora: A Journey Away, was published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2008.

Doug Rutledge dedicated most of his life to humanitarian issues. He has a Ph. D from the University of Chicago. He has taught on the college level for about 20 years. The University of Delaware Press published his book, Ceremony and Text in the Renaissance. He has had three plays produced, including “Run, Run from the Setting of the Sun,” which was performed both in Columbus and New York. He has also published numerous poems and essays. Most recently, his poetry appeared in Whatever House We Come From, published by Pudding-house Press. He has also written for the Somali Link Newspaper and is the writer for the Somali Documentary Project. Since leaving academics, Doug has been a passionate advocate for social justice. Along with Photographer Abdi Roble, he has presented Somali concerns to American audiences through lectures, presentations and shows at Ohio State University, The University of Minnesota and local schools, churches and art organizations throughout the country. In the fall of 2008, he and Abdi Roble will have a book published through the University of Minnesota Press entitled, The Somali Diaspora: A Journey Away.

Colonel Michael Paulovich, USMC (retired) served for 28 years in a variety of assignments in the areas of Special Operations, Security, and Training and Education. He was the Commanding Officer of the Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team (FAST) Company, a highly trained unit that provided protection for diplomatic missions and military activities during crisis events.

From 1992-1995, this unit was involved in Haiti, Somalia, and the Caribbean. Over the course of 17 months, he made 7 trips to Somalia. From 2003 to 2005 he later commanded Marine Corps Security Battalion, a unit of 2300 personnel located in 11 global locations. This unit was provided security for diplomatic missions during crisis events in Liberia, Haiti, and the Pacific and Gulf Regions.

His final military assignment was as the Director of the Division of Humanities  and Social Sciences at the US Naval Academy, overseeing over 130 faculty and staff in the Economics, History, English, Political Science, and Language Studies departments. He taught courses in “Economic Geography” and “Moral Reasoning for the Naval Officer.”

His education includes an AB from Harvard University in Economics, MBA and MA from Webster University and MA from the Naval War College. He currently is a Senior Research Scientist for Battelle Memorial Institute.

Art maven Carl Little discusses the work of Bernard Langlais, putting his abstract wood constructions featured in the current museum exhibition in the context of his greater ouevre.

Among Carl Little’s many books are Edward Hopper’s New England and The Watercolors of John Singer Sargent. His reviews and articles appear in a range of regional and national publications, including Art New England and Art in America. He contributed an essay to the catalogue for the exhibition “Bernard Langlais: Independent Spirit” at the Portland Museum of Art in 2002.

Barry Nemett, chair of the Painting Department at the Maryland Institute College of Art, will speak about his work in conjunction with his exhibition Barry Nemett: Drawings from Italy in the Museum of Art.

Nemett has received numerous awards, including two from the Alfred and Trafford Klots Residency Program to paint in Brittany, France, and a Ford Foundation grant to support his work in Italy.

In addition to visual works, Nemett has penned a novel, a textbook, as well as his most recent collection of writings and art: Paintings, Poems, and Passages, which will be available for signing in the Museum of Art immediately following the lecture.

Nemett’s lecture is co-sponsored by the Department of Art and Visual Culture

The Series opens with Getting Home by Zhang Yang, China (Mandarin, with subtitles in English). In this soulful and humane comedy, Zhao, a middle-aged construction worker, struggles to fulfill a dying co-worker’s last wish to be buried in China’s Three Gorges region. Setting out with his colleague’s body in tow, Zhao travels hundreds of miles across extraordinary countryside, encountering a number of colorful adventures and characters—and even discovering love in some unlikely quarters. Director Zhang Yang’s humorous and moving tale of friendship offers a powerful, and sometimes slapstick, commentary on the value of community and human connectivity in modern China.
