  {"id":7878,"date":"2010-06-24T19:36:16","date_gmt":"2010-06-24T19:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hub-dev.bates.edu\/magazine\/?page_id=7878"},"modified":"2017-09-06T13:43:24","modified_gmt":"2017-09-06T17:43:24","slug":"if-you-could-be-any-animal","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/magazine\/back-issues\/y1998\/fall98\/features\/designing-bobcats\/if-you-could-be-any-animal\/","title":{"rendered":"If you could be any animal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Colby and ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ colleges both chose mascots as a reaction to being seen as underdogs in sports contests, particularly football games.<\/p>\n<p>ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, for example, chose the bobcat because of the anima&#8217;s famous fighting spirit despite its small size. &#8220;The fight the light ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ football team put up against heavier odds promoted this idea,&#8221; wrote Jack Williams &#8217;11 in a letter to the January 1922\u00a0<em>ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Alumnus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>At Colby, Joseph Coburn Smith &#8217;24, editor of the\u00a0<em>Colby Echo,<\/em> published an editorial in 1923 suggesting that because Colby football so often upset favored foes, the team should no longer be seen as a &#8220;dark horse,&#8221; but a &#8220;white mule.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ chose its mascot through traditional egalitarian consensus, the neighbors to the north used a more endemic, festive approach. Before the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ game that fall, a group of Colby students appropriated a white mule from a nearby farm and marched the animal at the head of the band and student body as they paraded to the game. Having already beaten Bowdoin and the University of Maine, Colby went on to defeat ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, 9-6, behind the charm of the white mule.
