Early returns for a Class letter are in time for the winter magazine.<\/em>…Doris Atherton<\/strong> writes that\u00a0“Cap” <\/strong>is in the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta….Among the retirees at Schooner Estates in Auburn are a number of ’36-ers.\u00a0Ruth Coan Fulton<\/strong> spends summers at her camp on Great Pond, Belgrade Lakes, volunteers at the Schooner Library, and writes for their\u00a0Log<\/em>….Ed Foote<\/strong> is settled in a New London, New Hampshire, condo. He sees his two daughters once or twice during the year….Bob Johnson <\/strong>hopes to make it to Reunion….In Castine,\u00a0Edith Jordan Anderson<\/strong> continues with Friends of Maine Libraries and helps organize new Friends groups. She and Bill attended a “marvelous” Elderhostel in Mexico focused on jazz….Still traveling, writing about her trips,\u00a0June Lovelace Griffin<\/strong> has been to Italy and Turkey. As chair of our Social Committee, she hopes to see many of us at Reunion….Still tutoring Latin,\u00a0Georgia McKenney Frothingham<\/strong> says the classes are varied and interesting and “therapy for me.” She has retired her high heels, walks a mile a day which she labels “The Bataan Death March.”…Dr.\u00a0Yvon Marcotte<\/strong> tells of a flight to Virginia Beach so he and Ursula could see their new granddaughter, and a pleasant Caribbean cruise last spring….Your Class Secretary spent the summer at Ocean Park with families coming and going. It was fun seeing\u00a0Dot Holbrook<\/strong> at the Ocean Park ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ meeting. Since last year’s trip to English gardens, she has been redesigning some flower beds, moving perennials, and generally keeping fit….Damon Stetson<\/strong> notes their summer island sojourn, a reunion of Navy buddies, family visits, and “Got to ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ November 4 and saw the football team beat Bowdoin for its first victory in thirty-seven games [five years!]. Hope it means a new football era.”…Randy<\/strong> and\u00a0Happy Walker Webber<\/strong> have joined the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ies at Schooner Estates, are comfortably settled, and still do their hospital volunteer work twice a week. They often visit withLewis Davis<\/strong> and\u00a0Iris Provost Samuelson<\/strong>, among the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ alumni there….Dot Wheeler Holbrook<\/strong> says she can’t rid herself of the habit of attending committee meetings. She is on the residents’ council, and belongs to a book discussion group and one that gives research papers. A busy summer included lots of family at her Ocean Park cottage….Last September,Connie <\/strong>and\u00a0Dave Whitehouse<\/strong> were at the opening of the collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts which they have given to the College. It is an exciting addition to the collections and will be on display at Olin Arts Center through March 15, 1996….Jerry Wilson Niedringhaus<\/strong> still “runs the library,” serves on Homeowners Board, and plays bridge and mah-jongg. Several family weddings and a September tour of Nova Scotia and the Maritimes have been fun.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

York, RR 1, Box 833, Orrs Island, ME 04066-9727<\/em>Next Reunion in 1997.<\/em> At Thanksgiving time, Ruth and\u00a0Carl Bergengren<\/strong> moved from Glastonbury, Connecticut, to a cottage with a view and fireplace at Covenant Village in Cromwell. They expect to have more time for hobbies and fewer chores….In South Windsor, Connecticut,\u00a0Norman<\/strong> ’34 and\u00a0Edna Canham Priest<\/strong> continue to be active. Edna volunteers as needed at the local library and Norman’s interest in horticulture attracts fellow gardeners….Amy and\u00a0Bill Coffin<\/strong>are happy that the hurricanes have passed them by. They maintain good health by walking two miles daily. In July they spent a couple of weeks in Maine and anticipated a visit from Billie and\u00a0Gene Connell<\/strong> on a trip East from Albuquerque….The Class extends sympathy to\u00a0Irene Cook Putnam<\/strong> and her son and his wife,\u00a0Kendall <\/strong>(“K.C.”<\/strong>) andLinda <\/strong>(Halleck<\/strong>), on the death of husband and father\u00a0Elmore<\/strong>(“Put<\/strong>“), Adv. ’45, on November 5….Elsie and\u00a0Elliott Foster<\/strong>took a ten-day trip to Ireland in September. They follow the careers of their grandsons from private to professional school. Their daughter, Connie, is a social worker in Worcester, Massachusetts….Eileen\u00a0Gore<\/strong> sent sad news of\u00a0Bucky<\/strong>‘s death on September 16. Although he had been in ill health for several years and unable to return for Reunions, “he did love his alma mater and did want to go back.” The Class sends our deepest sympathy to Eileen and her family….Herb Hager<\/strong>continues his practice of internal medicine and cardiology, working a sixty-hour week. He is proud that he and his three children are all ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ graduates….Travel for Carl and\u00a0Betty Hunt Ellis<\/strong> was limited this year because of Carl’s health, but Betty enjoys her golf and Carl his garden. According to Betty, it was almost the best mini-reunion ever this fall hosted byBetty <\/strong>(Stockwell<\/strong>) and\u00a0Granville Oakes<\/strong>. It was greatly enhanced by the presence of\u00a0Betty Stevens Earle<\/strong> and Ion, but much diminished by the absence of\u00a0Happy Walker Webber<\/strong>, who was in the process of moving with\u00a0Randy<\/strong> to Schooner Estates in Auburn.\u00a0Lee<\/strong> Morin, <\/strong>who has joined the group the last few years, was unable to make it as well. In addition to Betty,\u00a0Millicent Thorp Pendleton <\/strong>came all the way from Colorado and\u00a0Peg Melcher Chamberlain<\/strong>,\u00a0Ruth Springer<\/strong>Rodgers<\/strong>, and\u00a0Jeanne Walker Hapgood<\/strong> were all there. Betty helped Jeanne celebrate her eightieth birthday along with Granville and Betty Oakes at a “vivid and vibrant” party staged by Jeanne’s daughter….Geneva Kirk<\/strong> enjoys the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½-Lewiston\/Auburn Community Breakfasts held on campus four times a year because they keep her informed of the fine work being done by ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ graduates….A spring Audubon-sponsored cruise down the intracoastal waterway, with stops at antebellum historic cities of the East Coast, was a highlight of the year for Sibyl and\u00a0Thurston Long<\/strong>. This spring they are booked for a similar trip to Panama and Costa Rica….It was a busy summer for Clifton and\u00a0Peg McKusick Gray <\/strong>with a biennial McKusick reunion at Sebasco Estates in June, a July plane trip to Olympia, Washington, to visit a friend, and a month of perfect August weather at the family cottage at Sebec Lake, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. They left in mid-October to go to Lake Helen, Florida, for the winter….Brownie and\u00a0Barney Marcus<\/strong> celebrated their fiftieth anniversary and Barney recalls that in 1945 the war was still on and he was a Navy officer while Brownie was an officer in the Marines. They took a cruise in October, and Barney plans his annual ski trip at the end of January accompanied by daughters Carla and Paula. Barney has already graciously offered to host the Class on the Saturday afternoon of our 1997 60th Reunion….We offer sincere sympathy to\u00a0Dorothy Preston Brouillard<\/strong> on the death of\u00a0Bob<\/strong> ’38 on September 9….Olga and\u00a0Ernie Robinson<\/strong>spent two weeks in California. Dry summer weather prevented Ernie from doing much fly-fishing, but he did travel to Lac Beauchene in the wilds of Canada where he caught a four-and-a-half-pound trout with flies he had hand tied. In November 1994 “in the spirit of Robin Hood,” he bagged a six-point whitetail buck with bow and arrow. He was hoping to duplicate the feat this year, but says “that bow is getting mighty hard to draw.”…We were saddened by the death of Emma Salley, wife of\u00a0Ashmun<\/strong>, in October, and offer sympathy to him and his family. The Salleys had been living at Schooner Estates in Auburn, but Ashmun planned to return to Washington State to be nearer family and friends….The MaineSunday Telegram<\/em> featured\u00a0Bob York<\/strong> in their October 1 issue, citing his four decades as Maine State Historian. He refers to himself as “a one-man band, promoting interest in Maine history.” He planned to retire from his volunteer post in December. Bob played a key role in establishing the State Archives, Maine Historic Preservation Commission, and about twenty local historical societies. He just completed fifty years of teaching history in the University of Maine system and continues to teach summer courses. He and Jan planned a Bermuda cruise in October and visited Prince Edward Island in July. Still wintering in Florida and spending summers on Orrs Island, Bob manages to play tennis regularly.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
