We contribute to the development and lives of our students through our teaching, of course, and also our advising (thesis and more generally) and mentorship to individual students, our support for their collective work through co- and extra-curricular activities (of a wide variety of types), and through the sometimes invisible labor of recognizing and supporting the agency, creativity and resilience of students less well served by our campus culture and structures.

If we hold the values in our mission statement to be true, how do we ensure that we are meeting these values? Are we? As individuals? As programs or departments? as divisions? How do we train ourselves to be advisors or mentors? Do we know if we are successful? Are faculty prepared to work with students that come from very different backgrounds than they have experienced? If we are missing a group of students through our interactions, how do we know? How do we make sure that faculty are given the opportunity and information that is needed to reflect on how we shape the students?

We do not train ourselves to evaluate ourselves or each other for teaching or advising.
