Course (Re)Design Institute-Big Course Vision and Learning Objectives

What does your course do? At the end of your course, what do your students know, what can your students do, and how have your students changed their values or attitudes?

In this three-hour workshop, we articulate the framing for your courses by answering these questions. We will also spend time writing strong, specific, attainable, and measurable learning objectives.

Each day of the Course (re)Design Institute (CDI) has a theme. Each day is just 9 am-12 pm. Each day includes lunch! Sign up for one, two, three, or all four of these workshops, whichever works both for your interests and your calendar. Information about each morning workshop is found below. Additionally, CITL will be available for 1-on-1 consultations each afternoon.

In this three-hour workshop, we discuss how to align your assignments and assessments to your learning objectives. We will also spend time ideating possible inclusive assignments and assessments.

What do engagement and participation look like? How much might we think creatively about both encouraging and measuring them? And how do we maintain equity in these procedures?

In this three-hour workshop, we imagine different ways to foster engagement and participation in learning spaces, noting how these can galvanize learning.

Who are �ֲ��ý students? What do �ֲ��ý classrooms look like? What are the expectations of a �ֲ��ý course? How can you keep these in mind, but not assume or stereotype?

In this three-hour workshop, we discuss patterns of �ֲ��ý teaching and learning, as well as how to push against these trends and provide inclusive and accessible courses for all students.

CBB Pedagogy Matters: An Invitation to Authenticity at Colby College

Keynote speaker, April Andry Rah’man, is the Assistant Director for Education Research at the University of Illinois Chicago’s Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence, where she helps colleagues transform research and teaching environments into spaces of belonging for students and instructors. She credits her children and students for teaching her what it means to be a responsive educator, and her mother for apprenticing her to design thinking and community care from an early age.

Her emerging scholarship focuses on how communities of educators and learners within the African diaspora organize homeplaces–self-determined spaces of Black healing and self-love, consciousness-raising, and resistance and liberation–within educational institutions.

Compassionate Classrooms Community of Practice

Explore the complex tensions of teaching, such as balancing high academic standards with sensitivity, justice, and compassion. This community invites faculty and staff to engage in stimulating conversations about meeting students where they are while fostering intellectual growth through “compassionate challenge.” Each session centers on a short, engaging reading from authors like bell hooks or Sarah Rose Cavanagh to help us navigate the power differentials and emotional labor of our work with students.

Join us for one, several, or all sessions as your schedule allows. To accommodate varying schedules, meeting times alternate between morning and midday slots. Breakfast or lunch will be provided at every meeting.
