The Volunteer Engagement Committee was tasked with providing input to inform the redesign of the Alumni Volunteer Center on the �ֲ���ý website. Improvements included a new landing page with an updated look and feel, new photos and engaging copy, and most importantly, an easier-to-navigate webpage that requires fewer clicks to access information. The link to sign up to volunteer is now front and center. Additionally, a new digital volunteer guide was added to the site. This guide addresses the “life cycle of volunteerism” – acknowledging that people have different capacities and interest levels for volunteering at different stages of life – and that any volunteer hours are welcome and appreciated. The committee members: 

✔ Conducted market research on 16 peer institutions’ websites.

✔ Provided summaries and recommendations on web user perspectives for the �ֲ���ý site.

✔ Provided recommendations on topics such as ease of access, breadth of volunteer opportunities, ease of signing up, ease of contacting �ֲ���ý, and volunteer recognition.

Professional Development

For FY26, the Professional Development subcommittee continued planning and hosting a webinar series that leveraged the remarkable breadth and depth of professional experience within the alumni community. The series continues to receive positive feedback: participants praised the panels for being insightful, inspiring, and highly relevant. Most sessions are recorded and posted on the �ֲ���ý YouTube channel for continued access. The Alumni Council hopes to continue this popular program in FY27.

✔ Jan 28, 2026 –

AC members Chuck James ’78 and Alex Hahn ’97 moderated the first panel of the series, which included 3 alumni: Steve Coupet ’09, Joselle Deocamp-Gautam ’01, and Kyle Flaherty ’97, as well as �ֲ���ý Professor and Chair of Digital and Computational Studies, Dr. Carrie Diaz Eaton. This session delved into how interdisciplinary thinking, communication skills, and the ethical grounding of a liberal arts degree are not just relevant but essential to solving the biggest AI challenges of our time. This event was incredibly popular with 237 registrations and 115 attendees tuning in for the conversation.

✔ Feb 25, 2026 – From �ֲ���ý to Beyond: Insights from Psychology Professionals Webinar
AC member Matt Bogyo ‘93, P’27 moderated a discussion with Amanda Nickerson, PhD. ’94, Chris Howells, Psy.D. ’03, and Irene Mapfunde, MSW, LICSW ’19, sharing how they successfully translated their liberal arts education into thriving careers across the mental health and scientific landscape. This event had 75 registrations and 35 attendees.

✔ April 16, 2026 –
AC member Jen Crawford ’01 and Susan Peillet Yule ’78 moderated a riveting discussion with David Akinyemi ’21, Asad Butt ’01, Allen Kendunga ’18, Michelle Pham ’15, and Carine Warsawski ’07 about the grit and reality of launching a business. This event had 40 registrations and drew 33 attendees.

✔ May 19, 2026 – �ֲ���ý in the Arts – Navigating Your Creative Path
AC member Priscila Guillen ’20 facilitated this conversation with panelists Singha Hon ’14, Samuel Mironko ’21, Brennen Malone ’17, who explored the winding path of a creative career. This session was focused on how to navigate the professional arts world. 

Impact and Awareness Committee

The Impact and Awareness Committee’s mission is to increase awareness of the Alumni Council among the �ֲ���ý Alumni community, thereby enhancing the effectiveness and impact of the Council and the initiatives and programs it sponsors. Often, alumni first learn about the Alumni Council when they are invited to serve on it. This subcommittee hypothesizes that if the Council is better known amongst the larger alumni community, it could garner more candidates interested in serving and continue to improve the engagement and impact of Council-sponsored activities and programs. This year’s accomplishments included:

✔ Utilizing a Brand Ladder approach to poll members’ views on ways the AC enhances alumni’s connection to �ֲ���ý, feelings of community, and access to beneficial experiences and impressions. 

✔ Creating sub-groups to focus on ways to customize content and means of connecting with volunteers. Examples of sub-groups include Engaged Volunteers (thinking about how to maintain their engagement) and Young Alumni (how to engage them early on for lifelong connections to the college). 

✔ Identifying what messaging will resonate with different sub-groups to help build AC awareness, and better engage those groups with Alumni Council activities.

✔ Reached out to the other Alumni Council committees to identify ways to increase overall alumni awareness of activities such as award nominations, professional development webinars, and volunteer opportunities.

The Regional Engagement Taskforce, a year-long ad hoc committee of the Alumni Council, focused on laying the groundwork for “�ֲ���ý and Beyond”, an initiative to support alumni-initiated and alumni-directed events. The long-term goal is for alumni to be able to host regional programs with remote administrative support and oversight from Alumni Engagement staff. 

✔ Conducted a scan of peer institutions’ practices to inform the approach.

✔ Developed the strategy, processes, and tools to expand alumni-driven events in key secondary markets.

✔ Testing alumni-interface webpage with detailed “how to host a �ֲ���ý event” guidelines and checklist. Anticipated soft launch in July.

✔ August 07: “Pursuing a Career in International Affairs”
Hosted by Alumni Council member Patrick Quirk ’03, this session featured panelists Paul Grove ’88, Clerk on the United States Senate Committee on Appropriations, Catherine Nzuki ’21, Associate Fellow in the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and Eric Adamson ’15, NATO Coordinator at the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency based in Stockholm. The conversation centered on the career paths of these alumni and the advice they would give a current �ֲ���ý student or recent grad interested in pursuing a career in foreign affairs. They also shared what they wished they had known beginning their job searches and what they would have done differently. The event wrapped up with questions from the audience and the news of a new �ֲ���ý Foreign Affairs group on LinkedIn.

Hosted by Alumni Council members Liza Pearce ’14 and David Akinyemi ’21, this session featured panelists Allie Freed ’16, Non-Profit Coordinator for Higher Ed Gifts/Development and an MBA Candidate; Sarah Sachs, Principal at Sarah Sachs ’18 Consulting; and Walter Washington ’19, Paralegal in Banking/Investments and Associate Assistant Coach. The conversation centered on how these young alumni successfully transitioned from their first jobs to new opportunities, the role of mentorship, and how they leveraged the �ֲ���ý network to support their journeys.

✔ February 11:  “Careers in Scientific Research and Biomedical Professions”
Hosted by Alumni Council member Matt Bogyo ’93, P’27, this panel explored the diverse pathways into scientific research and biomedical careers. Speakers included Karin Borrelli, ’94, MD, Medical Director, Saratoga Hospital, David Ferrone, MD ’96 at Tufts University, Bruce Koch, Ph.D, Senior Director, Discover and Technology Services at Stanford University, Jennifer Shumilla-O’Mahoney, Ph.D ’94,Dartmouth-Senior Project Manager at Genentech, and Cara Starbach, ’19, Ph.D student in Chemistry at Stanford. Panelists shared their academic and professional trajectories, and offered valuable insights into advancing careers in science, engineering, and medicine degrees.

✔ April 1: “Careers in Finance: Bobcat Alumni Insights”
Hosted by Steve Brackett ’85 P’22, Managing Member, and Co-Head of Alternative Investments at Shepherd, Kaplan and Krochuk, Graeme Welds ’15, Vice President, Stewardship and Sustainable Investing at Neuberger Berman, Terry Welch ’83, Managing Director at MFS Investment Management, and Fadia Felfe ’15, Vice President of High Grade and Emerging Markets, Credit Syndicate Desk, JP Morgan Chase. The panel of Alumni Council members offered strategic advice on entering the financial sector, navigating transitions, and building a successful career in business.

The committee continued refining the Past Alumni Council Member newsletter. Learnings from the newsletter can be applied to a broader strategy for alumni affinity group engagement. Future work could include a possible pivot into more curated content such as personal Alumni Council stories and creating more dynamic and interactive content for multi-purpose use across social media. The group leveraged lessons learned from the pilot newsletter to refine future newsletter content.

The committee has focused on two main initiatives this year: reviving the multi-city day of service program and a virtual alumni panel on activating and navigating the �ֲ���ý network.

✔ The committee worked with the New York regional group on efforts to host an arts panel and Day of Service volunteer opportunity.

✔ The Harnessing the Power of the �ֲ���ý Network panel was held on March 19^th and included several AC members.

✔ Plans are in place to organize four alumni panels in the next academic year.

The committee developed a newsletter that was shared with all past Alumni Council members with the goal to keep this audience more informed and connected. This year the committee laid the framework for a pilot with testing content and structure.

Highlighted FY23 accomplishments:

✔ Established initial communications with all �ֲ���ý class officers to leverage their personal class connections with the goal of improving the quality and accuracy of data in the alumni networking systems. This communication link will also be used to solicit ideas for candidates and venues to support regional events and increase awareness of the Alumni Council’s activities.

✔ Established monthly Zoom calls to continue dialogue on the progress of committee initiatives.

✔ Established Slack account to increase collaboration between committee members who are time-challenged and cannot make the scheduled virtual meeting.

✔ Reviewed and suggested content updates to the Steering Committee Handbook for Regional Volunteers.

✔ Collaborated with Alumni Engagement on an online forum to identify potential speakers or venues for regional events as we expand options beyond sporting events and local bars.

✔ Supported the college’s career advancement programs including the �ֲ���ý Bridge and advocated for participation and engagement with the platform

✔ Participated in conversations to support the Professional Development series and offered suggestions for next year’s programs and new topics for Lighthouse Career Associates to consider

✔ Identified regional leaders and initiated conversations to promote uniformity throughout the regional networks. This includes a plan to start calls (2-3/year) with regional leaders this summer to talk about what has been most successful in their areas re: programming/promotions/etc. and what they would like to try for programs as we move into in-person/virtual/hybrid-style events

✔ We had a very strong Alumni Council presence and participation at each of the regional events with President Spencer. For these events, we had four members attend in Boston, three members attend in NYC, and one member attend in Washington, D.C. We also had one member participate in a virtual event, sponsored by the class of 1985

Process Improvements:

✔ Continued to utilize a schedule of shorter, yet more frequent virtual Council meetings to continue our work more efficiently and effectively through the COVID-19 pandemic

✔ Began the process of a thorough bylaw review to ensure that all procedures are reflective of the evolution of the Alumni Association.

✔ Reevaluated our new member nomination and vetting processes to better ensure genuinely diverse alumni representation on the Alumni Council.

✔ We received 25 nominations in FY2022 for the Alumni Council.

✔ New members who will be joining the Alumni Council this fall: Chuck James ’78, Natalie Rodriguez ’92, Matthew Bogyo ’93, and Patrick Quirk ‘03
