Class of 1874 – <\/strong>First African American Graduate<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henry Wilkins Chandler was the first African American student to graduate from ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½. Chandler was born free, while six of the first nine African American students at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ were former slaves, most recruited by ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ founder Oren Cheney from refugee camps around Washington, D.C., during and after the Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in 1852 in Bath, Maine, Chandler excelled in the public schools. At ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½, he was an editor of The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Student<\/em>, then a monthly magazine (the student staff was hand-picked by professors for their budding literary talent) and was on the executive committee of the Eurosophian Literary Society. After graduating from ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ in 1874, he studied law at Howard University and then moved to Florida with “only two dollars and one half in his pocket.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a year of teaching, he passed the Florida Bar and began practicing in Jacksonville. He was soon editing The Ocala Republican<\/em> and The Plain Dealer<\/em> newspapers. In 1880, Chandler was elected to the state senate and held office for two terms. He is also held office as city clerk and alderman and was a state delegate to the Republican National Convention several times.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
